That a Christmas tree decoration is called a "bauble", not "ball ball"? Or how they make it through junior school without knowing the difference between "his" and "he's"? What happens in schools these days and don't people ever read anything?

@Ivy455

Probably always been said but spag bowl is the one that gets me.
I've seen spag bowel and it still makes me giggel👀

I do not accept that anyone in UK grows up and has no idea about WW2 or Holocaust. That's ignorance. That's not on schools or anything else. That's pure ignorance

Gwenhwyfar · 09/12/2020 16:57

"We got onto the topic of WW2 and I said that we were covering the holocaust which was upsetting for Y6 but needed to be talked about to stop it happening again!"

It might be that this 'snowflake' thing was the reason why she didn't know about the holocaust. When I was at school, we watched films from the liberation of the camps in history class in 3rd year. One girl had nightmares and her parents complained so it was stopped. That was a terrible thing because history was optional after that so one complaint stopped the film being shown to everyone.
Some things are worth having nightmares over.

The other thing that strikes me about this young girl is that must have not watched very much television. British TV is pretty obsessed with WWII.

My DH always says a ball point figure rather than ball park. It makes no fucking sense. I’ve considered divorce.

AtlantaGinandTonic · 09/12/2020 17:47

On the flip side, I read a LOT as a child. I’ve mispronounced a lot of words because I’d not heard them before, I’d only seen them in print and as a 90s child, I didn’t have Google to easily find proper pronunciations (and the pronunciation symbols meant nothing to me as a 10-year-old, so forget those).

EternalOptimist7 · 09/12/2020 17:50

Spag bowel or bowl really gets me too because surely people must realise “ bol “ is short for bolognese?!
I used to correct people but stopped because I don’t want to offend ( possible dyslexia etc). It’s really difficult sometimes though!

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 09/12/2020 17:52

Imagine getting to adult life and thinking you’re superior than other people just because you have better spelling and grammar?!?

YABU. Get over it.

Yespresh · 09/12/2020 17:55

I heard this one on the radio recently. Bearly or barely??

It is always bear the animal unless you are naked.

joles12 · 09/12/2020 17:58

It is partly for this reason that there is a campaign for children’s TV and technology platforms to turn the subtitles on - turnonthesubtitles.com
This would dramatically improve children’s literacy skills.

Yespresh · 09/12/2020 17:59

I was had my hair done by a lady who looked just like someone I know. I asked her if she had a sister. She said no. I then said she must have a doppelgänger. She said “I don’t know what sort of dog that is”. Hmm

margesimpson40 · 09/12/2020 18:10

I find it kind of sweet and tbh it doesn't merit an entire slew of posts it ain't that important

FelicisNox · 09/12/2020 18:14

Honestly I think it depends on how much folks read rather than general intelligence or quality of education.

My spelling, grammar and understanding of the English language comes from being an avid reader not from my IQ or education as neither are anything special.

Wilkie1956mog · 09/12/2020 18:27

Chimley. There instead of their. Bear instead of bare. Recently I came across "I dernt do that" instead of "daren't. I've seen "weather or not" instead of "whether". And people saying "ek-cetra" instead of et cetera. I do try not to get all superior or let these things aggravate me too much. I realise some people just aren't good at spelling, just as some aren't good at maths, but it still does my head in.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 09/12/2020 18:32

A lady i no says lingerie exactly as its spelt lin ger ee.
I now call in lin ger ee 😂

cherish123 · 09/12/2020 18:36

I am an intelligent woman and I thought it was bobble (not bauble) until I was about 35 🙄.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/12/2020 18:51

I might be misunderstanding your post, but "bearly" isn't a word...

I agree it's always "bear with me", but "bearing with someone" and "having barely finished something" aren't related at all (other than the root words being homophones).

Imnotahugger · 09/12/2020 18:59

Am I the only one who has never seen someone refer to a 'ball ball' ??

Luluminx · 09/12/2020 19:04

I personally like angles instead of angels! Makes for amusing reading!

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2020 19:09

I call dd my little angle. Sometimes I tell her how many degrees she is

Janegrey333 · 09/12/2020 19:18

Page 1 and someone has opined that it’s a “regional thing”. No, it isn’t. It is due to ignorance of the correct spelling.

BunsyGirl · 09/12/2020 19:21

My brother is a teacher. In fact, he’s a head of year. However, he doesn’t know the difference between “their” and “there”.

Janegrey333 · 09/12/2020 19:26

Oh my goodness! That is shocking. Please tell me he is not an English teacher. You said Head of Year, though, which is often a position PE teachers are given, weirdly. Everyone knows spelling is not their forte...
BunsyGirl · 09/12/2020 19:31

@Janegrey333 No, he definitely doesn’t teach English. He had to retake the English test when he did his PGCE as he failed it the first time. He’s not a PE teacher though!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 09/12/2020 19:35

There just should be minimum language standard for teachers...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 09/12/2020 19:38

Just to add my sibling ais a teacher (not UK) and if he didn't knwo basics of our language, he wouldn't get a job even though it's not what he teaches. It's nkthing personal, it's about being an example and knowing taht kids read what you write so they can actually pick these mistakes up because "Mr X writes it like that so it's correct, isn't it?"
