The original secret garden film was favourite of mine as a child, watched many times.
I know alot of films rarely compare to the originals. I'm half way through and - I don't like it. It isn't a patch on the original. Did you like it, do you prefer the original?

It was shit. The original is beautiful.

Fuckoffyoueviltrolls · 05/12/2020 23:34

Apologies for the title, I must of caught the delete button Blush

When I say original I mean the 1993 version. I believe there are older ones.

Fuckoffyoueviltrolls · 05/12/2020 23:36

I mean the 1993 version as well. I usually like colin.firth, even he isn't swaying me

Op it's such a shame, they could have made it so wonderful. The garden was peculiar, it had no pace, the rooms were gloomy and underlit, Colin f was as flat as a pancake...

They had so many things they could have done better.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 05/12/2020 23:37

I usually love Colin Firth. The weird magical garden was just all wrong.

ILoveAnOwl · 05/12/2020 23:45

I've just read the book and watched the 1993 film with my class of very tough primary aged boys. They loved both the novel and the film. It was such a joy to share it with them!

IracebethOfCrims · 06/12/2020 08:01

I saw it at the cinema and was disappointed Sad

WhyDoYouAsk · 06/12/2020 08:04

Is this available to watch on-line? I can’t find it.

Alicesweewonders · 06/12/2020 08:07

I loved the 1993 one, it was so enchanting. I remember buying the soundtrack as well, the music was just beautiful.

Breathmiller · 06/12/2020 08:13

I watched it recently and liked it to a certain extent but it's not a oarch on the '93 one. It doesn't matter how many times I watch it I have a lump in my throat. A pp is right..its enchanting. The music makes my heart swell when i think of it.

Breathmiller · 06/12/2020 08:14

oarch - patch

Feminmister · 06/12/2020 08:20

The first half was slow but it picked up. I thought the actress that played Mary was very engaging. Partly I was just thrilled to be in a cinema after months of lockdown! The kids enjoyed it though.

Oxyiz · 06/12/2020 08:34

It was bonkers - none of it made sense and Mary's character was odd. They were obviously trying for something new and trying to remove the "spoilt child" thing, but instead they wiped out her personality and then also wiped out the feeling of discovery and bringing the garden back to life.

Ended up laughing as they wandered out of a bland wet foggy moor into the flaming Eden Project with its own microclimate. The story was never actually about a magical garden FFS.

I wouldn't have minded a total reinvention but instead it was half arsed and didn't seem to know what its message was.

The 1993 version is worlds ahead.

LuckyNumberThirteen · 06/12/2020 08:37

I didn't finish it.

Even Colin Firth couldn't save it.

It's on Sky.

It's on NowTV 😊
inmylifeIlovedthemall · 06/12/2020 08:44

It was absolute rubbish.

I was gutted as we had watched them filming one of the scenes at a location close by (stumbled across the massive film crew, trailers etc while out walking).

From that moment onwards I couldn’t wait for it to be released.

When it was I was just stunned by how such a good cast could make such an appalling film.

Jammydodger1981 · 06/12/2020 08:55

Agree with pps, it is not a patch on 1993 version. I found it ok though, but I’m not in a rush to watch it again and would have been annoyed if I’d paid to watch it.

WhyDoYouAsk · 06/12/2020 09:13

vanilla
Thanks! I might do the 7 day free trial... 😊

Rememberallball · 06/12/2020 09:18

Watched a few weeks ago and agree with others, it’s not a patch on the 1993 version. Also agree that this new version has wiped out the bratty personality of Mary and that is what the garden changes more than anything - and the magical quality of the garden doesn’t fit either

ForestYeti · 06/12/2020 09:37

We watched both a couple of weeks ago and definitely prefer the older version

Dumbie · 06/12/2020 09:40

Ha. I thought you meant the technicolor version that I watched a million times as a kid (in the 80s/90s)

flaviaritt · 06/12/2020 09:43

I watched it and thought it wasn’t too bad. Didn’t think it added anything, though.

AcornAutumn · 06/12/2020 09:43

It was odd and boring.

You know how some films stretch out things that don’t need it, and then minimise stuff that you’re enjoying?

Just rubbish all round. If I’d paid to see it I’d have been annoyed. Colin Firth’s total time in it is about 7 minutes.
