Gambia not Gambria of course, no idea where that R came from.

DidoLamenting · 06/12/2020 12:30

Argentina can also be called The Argentine although that name might be less used/ not used these days..

jay55 · 06/12/2020 12:34

It took me until I was 40simething and watching top chef to realise I could sharpen a vegetable knife. I'd only ever sharpened carving knives and suffered with the rest.

HintOfVintagePink · 06/12/2020 12:37

@Vivi0

In the song "This little piggie...", the piggie that went to market was not going shopping.

OMG!

Whaaaat?! I’m 36 and this has floored me. All those beautiful nursery book illustrations of a piglet skipping over a hill with a straw basket on his arm...
WhyDoYouAsk · 06/12/2020 12:41

Anything to do with cars. Can't change tyres, check oil or even pop the bonnet!

Can’t? My 10 year old DD can do those things. She can also identify all of the warning lights on the dash, knows most of the rules of the road and different speed limits and the basics of how the engine, clutch and brakes work.
There’s absolutely no reason anyone old enough to drive can’t do the things you’ve listed.

I can’t do any of the above either.
Because I have never bothered to learn how to for myself. I have never been taught how to by another person either.

Did your DD instinctively know how to do these things? 😒 No, I thought not.

OwlBeThere · 06/12/2020 12:45

@Graphista you should hear the sat nav lady in my car try and say ‘Llanelli’ or ‘ynysybwl’ it’s a fun time!

chomalungma · 06/12/2020 12:45

I'm not convinced by This little piggy.

So one went to market
One stayed at home
One had roast beef
One had none

And the last one cried wee all the way home

I think the first one got a very raw deal. Grin

It seems that some people have a dark interpretation though - but there' s no evidence for it

RosesAndHellebores · 06/12/2020 12:46

@Sashh - it points in the correct direction. Only noticed it after reading about it on here and find it v useful. DH's car has one too which is even more useful as his petrol cap is on the other side from mine.

It would be even more helpful if petrol cars had green caps and diesel cars black caps. Perhaps some do. Not such a problem now as both our cars are petrol.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/12/2020 12:49

Oh and I've never needed to change a tyre or battery because I have breakdown cover. The very nice chap at Kwik fit checks the tyre pressures for me and I give him a fiver. Can top up screen wash and check oil and water levels but on a regularly serviced car have never found it necessary.

babster · 06/12/2020 12:57

I used to think that Colonel Sanders had a really tiny body

thisismycodename · 06/12/2020 13:00

Nowhere in the rhyme 'Humpty Dumpty' does it say that Humpty is an egg.

Blew my mind that one!

chomalungma · 06/12/2020 13:00

Cost me a £1 yesterday to check mine and repressurise them.

There are some things about a car that are really basic that people should be able to do - such as check oil (because it's just a simple look at a dip stick), look at the coolant levels, put screen wash in and check tyre pressures. Because you don't really want to wait for a service to find out they are low and then call out the breakdown services.

Changing a wheel - well, slightly more complicated given that most cars don't have spare wheels anymore. Instead they have these stupid systems to reinflate them and seal any puncture.

pigsDOfly · 06/12/2020 13:04

I can't change a tyre mainly because I don't have the physical strength to wrangle a car wheel nor undo and retighten the wheel nuts. And anyway, I'd rather not have to.

Surprised a 10 year old would have the strength.

Also, I have breakdown cover so have never found the need to do it.

QuestionableMouse · 06/12/2020 13:04

@grey12

I had the idea that Winston Churchill was american BlushGrin

(Disclaimers: not born in the uk and hate history!!!)

I don't know, I just thought he had more flair than the english people I knew, with the cigar and all. Maybe kind of Capone style

He wasn't though. He was born in Blenheim Palace!

I always wondered why the Antarctic was on a map, but the Arctic wasnt. But the Antarctic is snow covered land and the Arctic is just frozen water. I was really surprised by this.

BikeRunSki · 06/12/2020 13:07

@thisismycodename Humpty Dumpty was a cannon. Lewis Carroll/John Tenniell turned him into an egg.

It's not all snow covered land, some of it is desert.
wonderstuff · 06/12/2020 13:11

I never understood the chicken road joke before! I also assumed Pontefract was in Wales.. 🤯

Hahaha88 · 06/12/2020 13:12

@Acrasia

I was 40 when I realised that you sing the alphabet to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
Bloody hell so you do!

But you can buy ready sliced veg in the supermarket. People don't like to do things for themselves these days, and are happy to pay others to do it.

Some people clearly are happy with this solution. Not everybody wants the same thing.

SusannahSophia · 06/12/2020 13:14

@SusannahSophia

Raisins and sultanas are dried grapes, it’s true, but currants are dried currants, as in blackcurrants and redcurrants.
So this is wrong! Blush

That’ll teach me to google before spouting forth next time!

carlaCox · 06/12/2020 13:16

It's not all snow covered land, some of it is desert.

The whole of the Antarctic is desert.

chomalungma · 06/12/2020 13:18

This is 5 different ways of doing the Alphabet song.

I think that the version that fits well is the last one

"Row row row your boat"

chomalungma · 06/12/2020 13:21

But you can buy ready sliced veg in the supermarket. People don't like to do things for themselves these days, and are happy to pay others to do

True - but it's not a safety issue to others if you get someone to slice your carrots for you.

It can be a safety issue to others if you don't check your tyre pressure regularly, look out for your coolant levels, screen wash levels and oil levels. These are very simple things to do.

But the pp are having these checked, they just get someone else to check it.
