@BikeRunSki we visited Pontefract this summer. Loved the castle but gutted we couldn't find a single pontefract cake to buy at all! Didn't stumble across the haribo outlet either!

I believed that when the tide was in here it was out the other side Blush

I love these threads-they make me feel I’m not so alone. Reminds me of this classic!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/12/2020 08:42

@midnightstar66 I imagine it's because lots of places in Wales start with Ponty.

Rockbird · 06/12/2020 08:43

DH has just told me that a girl he was at school with and has just reconnected with (they're now 49!) is the daughter of Justin Hayward who bloody wrote Nights in White Satin!

LadyEloise · 06/12/2020 08:53

So it's not Knights in White Satin 🙈
In my head I could see knights with lances facing each other, on horseback, dressed in white satin flowing robes ( not chainmail ) ready to joust. I never listened to the lyrics. The white satin probably polyester. FFS Blush

midnightstar66 · 06/12/2020 08:56

@CeeceeBloomingdale I suppose so although that's ponty not ponte. With England being the more populated and usually better known by the masses and pontefract having a racecourse and being a fairly large town im a bit surprised at the assumption falls that way 😆

LadyEloise · 06/12/2020 09:11

Pontefract is not in Wales - WHAT !!!
And County Durham should be in Ireland- we're all counties here. None of this shire stuff. Smile
I know Brunei is in Asia, but I thought it was in the Middle East.

Dundundunnn · 06/12/2020 09:16

Until I met DH I thought pro bono was charitable work named after (U2's) Bono... I am not usually that stupid.

Paddingtonthebear · 06/12/2020 09:17

“Justin Hayward wrote Nights in White Satin when he was 19, the song was inspired by his then girlfriend who had given him a gift of satin bedsheets”

PerseverancePays · 06/12/2020 09:20

My daughter (40) insists it’s razor back and not racer back! It makes no sense.

midnightstar66 · 06/12/2020 09:22

My ex and his whole family call a rucksack a rack sack. Ironically it makes more sense 😆

NorbertMeubles · 06/12/2020 09:27

Let's celebrate not ruining a thread by belittling everyone @Feminist101101. You may be able to do every single thing ever but you certainly can't interact on a lighthearted chat forum without sounding like a mad angry know it all. Maybe spend less time changing tyres and learn some basics...

Paddingtonthebear · 06/12/2020 09:30

My ex insisted turquoise was pronounced “turk-you-oi-see”,cutlery was “cuttle-er-ree” and avocado was “ad-vacado”.

Husband thinks you can catch a cold from having wet hair, his parents think the same.

wellthatsunusual · 06/12/2020 09:30

There are some exceptions to the kidneys staying in the body after the new one is transplanted. I know someone whose diseased kidneys were removed but it's because they were hugely deformed and swollen and there was no room for them and it was more dangerous to leave them than remove them. I understand that in most cases it is the opposite, it is more dangerous to remove them, so that's why they leave them.

movingonup20 · 06/12/2020 09:33

@RosesAndHellebores

I was thinking the same thing Grin

hardyloveit · 06/12/2020 09:33

I didn't realise until about a year ago how big the continent of Africa actually is.
You can fit usa China and many European countries in it. Maps make it look so small

Why does it?

Time to show CJ and Josh from the West Wing
Ejb86 · 06/12/2020 09:40

@alexdgr8 they grow on a bush, and one bush only produces one pineapple a year!

Graphista · 06/12/2020 09:47

@midnightstar66 oh really?! That's hilarious! I've heard the most bonkers pronunciations just on things like call centre menus!

@hardyloveit I've delighted in blowing other mners minds by having them look at maps with world in its correct proportion and placement, you might like to do this yourself if you haven't already, and ones with the "South Pole" at the top, what I'd somehow failed to establish was that my dd was similarly educated. She's away studying just now and one assignment made this sort of relevant and I mentioned the map thing in passing assuming I'd told her when she was younger and she was like

"Wait...what?! What do you mean normal maps are wrong!"

Cue a very funny and illuminating conversation whereupon I also discovered she has the opposite issue to my own regarding the former countries Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia - I grew up knowing those countries and can't seem to get the new ones to stick in my head, she was oblivious to the old countries and the details of the Balkan wars relating to them. She knew about the Balkan wars sort of but didn't know they had led to the dissolution of the old countries and the establishment of the new ones.

Very interesting conversation in terms of differing generational perspectives.

I then later had a similar conversation with my mum where she still remembers the old names of certain countries that have since changed their names upon becoming independent from colonising countries but I know the "new" names as that's how I learnt of the countries as I was born/learning about them after the name changes, she and I have similar differences regarding ussr and the breakup of it leading to certain countries "re-emerging" - it's all bloody confusing though!

I mean I understand and respect why the changes have happened but wow it's hard to unlearn and relearn the correct names and locations especially when you're pretty crap at this type of geography anyway!

I periodically play things like sporcle or trivia apps on geography and try to learn but I can't seem to make it stick!

Tinkerbellflowers · 06/12/2020 09:49

I only found out a couple of weeks ago where wee comes out. I was laughing about how some women think it comes out of our vaginas. And I said surely everyone knows it comes out of our clitoris (thinking I'm so clever and smug). But it doesn't! 😲

hardyloveit · 06/12/2020 09:50

@Graphista yes I remember the old ones too!
It honestly blew my mind when I found out about Africa - because of maps it just doesn't look big at all!!

Graphista · 06/12/2020 09:51

LOVE that west wing clip. I was late to the party with west Wing I'm working through it now and I laughed out loud at that clip. Genius!

formerbabe · 06/12/2020 09:52

I never knew stone henge was so big until I had to look it up as my DC were interested in it...I thought the stones were kind of human height

Graphista · 06/12/2020 09:53

@Tinkerbellflowers I got a better one - my ex thought that the pill prevented pregnancy by making the taker grow a sort of skin across the cervix! He also thought when on our periods we only bled when visiting the toilet! And no he couldn't find the clitoris with a sat nav I don't think Grin
