A pony isn't a small horse, it's from the same family, but you can get small horses, quarter horses, minature horses, they aren't ponies. If you live in the UK, geese do fly to warmer climes in the winter, we watch them go from October, to find food and breed

GroundAlmonds · 06/12/2020 04:57

My one year old is very good at moisturising carpets. No excuse not to start young! 😃

MooseBreath · 06/12/2020 04:58

I thought narwhals were fictional mythical creatures like unicorns. Found out a few months ago at 29 years old that they exist.

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/12/2020 05:00

With sudocreme, or was that just mine?

DidoLamenting · 06/12/2020 05:12

@PreRaphaeliteMotherhood

I knew it was Nights in White Satin but for a very long time my brain processed the name "The Manic Street Preachers" as preachers who lived on Manic Street- not street preachers who were manic.

😱😱😱 Why has this never occurred to me!?

In a similar vein to the common Wombles of Wimbledon and the preachers who live on Manic Street, it took many years for me to twig the ship The Beach Boys had such a hard time on was called "The John B"

They could have been on "the Frigate John B" or "the Tanker John B" or even "the Submarine John B" but it would still be called the John B.

And the lesser spotted woodpecker probably isn't less spotty than the greater spotted woodpecker.

@IHaveBrilloHair

With sudocreme, or was that just mine?
Yeah that’s the stuff. What else was a competent baby with life skills use? Wink
Graphista · 06/12/2020 05:18

Nobody knows everything! It's fun to learn though.

I learned this year how ridiculously easy it is to make home made flat breads!

And I'm a fairly competent and experienced cook (or so I thought)

I only recently discovered the Netherlands and Holland were the same place...it still confuses me

Not quite true.

Holland is a region of the country of the Netherlands and consists of 2 provinces : North Holland and south Holland. Provinces are roughly equivalent to counties, the region of Holland is similar to how we have eg east Anglia. That's very much a simplification as obviously different countries don't operate exactly as each other politically, but that's a rough explanation.

@Judashascomeintosomemoney written before I read yours and perhaps a little more in depth? Funny how we both used easy anglia though

Learnt due to living in the Netherlands (I knew Holland was part of Netherlands before living there but I understand the intersections better now). There are 12 provinces for the pp who asked about "Other areas"

@Pickypolly I'm in Scotland, whenever certain place names are said on something automated but they've selected a posh English "voice" and not "educated" it as to the right pronunciation the results can be bloody hilarious! Cleethorpes is nothing compared to the mangling of Milngavie, tighnabruich or even Fraserburgh hell even Edinburgh has some odd results!

Re "another think coming" it's because the whole phrase is "if x thinks they can do/say y they've another think coming" ie they better bloody think again!

That you are supposed to wash rice before you cook it...it has trace amounts of arsenic on it!

Erm...you've misunderstood. Arsenic is a naturally occurring Element. Rice absorbs it more than certain other crops and is consumed in large quantities in some countries and the arsenic is thought to make over consumption of rice carcinogenic

More info here

https://www.food.gov.uk/safety-hygiene/arsenic-in-rice

Rinsing it depends on what type of rice you're making. Rinsing is for rinsing off starch which you want to do if you want fluffy rice but if you want sticky rice don't rinse it.

My one: I thought hr people were supposed to be empathetic and to help employees with problems

I know not the point you were making but HR exists for protection of their employers not employees, basically to stop them getting sued for bad treatment of employees

Found out today tomatoes are native to the Americas so there was no tomato sauce in Italy until 16th C.

Now that I didn't know! Thanks

Lentils grow in pods like peas

Graphista · 06/12/2020 05:19

And I spelt tighnabruaich wrong! Grin

Some of the pronunciations of place names on the new Edinburgh busses are hilarious. You'd have thought they'd have checked 😆

midnightstar66 · 06/12/2020 05:46

how can anyone not do the car stuff - can't means can't be arsed

Surely that goes for pretty much anything. I can't fix my boiler, fly a plane or perform surgery. I can't replace my phone battery or ride a motorbike. I'm sure I could learn to do all of these things with varying degrees of effort and instruction if I applied myself, and they are all handy skills, however I can't be arsed.

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/12/2020 05:51

Sometimes it can mean you have a disability which means you can drive, but can't do lots of the maintenance.
That's what motability cars are for ignorant bitch

mathanxiety · 06/12/2020 05:57

Just waiting for someone to come on to say their two year old changed the brake pads on their car..

It may well have been a two year old who put in the car battery I bought two years ago. Upside down, or possibly back to front, can't exactly recall now.
Smile

sashh · 06/12/2020 05:59

I think a pony is up to 14 hands high and it's a horse above, but horsey types will correct me

Miniature horses?

As for the statue of liberty, it was a gift from France and was originally built in Paris before being disassembled and sent to the USA, there are still smaller precursors in Paris.

@AthelstaneTheUnready Pontefract isn’t in Wales? Are you sure?

OMG have you never had a Pomfret cake? Please tell me I'm not the only person to enjoy a chew of a liquorice stick / root?

BikeRunSki · 06/12/2020 06:04

@IHaveBrilloHair

With sudocreme, or was that just mine?
No, mine did that to. Lilac stains everywhere.
mathanxiety · 06/12/2020 06:12

They have Christian priests and stuff officiating and doing the announcement even though it all seems pretty pagan to me to be looking for “omens” from a ground hog.
@PlanDeRaccordement
The Punxsutawney Inner Circle is a group of volunteers and groundhog handlers wearing costumes including top hats. Is this what you are thinking of?

shesellsseashells99 · 06/12/2020 06:31

Until I was about 20, I thought a 'handbag' was a 'hambag'. Onviously makes sense when I knew. Maybe its just the way everyone round here speaks?? Grin

pylongazer · 06/12/2020 06:44

I also genuinely thought the Wombles of Wimbledon were openly admitting they were common! Only found out when I visited a friend in Wimbledon whilst at uni and went past Wimbledon Common.

SOmuchsparkle · 06/12/2020 06:51

You come across as quite snippy @Feminist10101

pylongazer · 06/12/2020 06:55

Is anyone going to enlighten us what the joke is regarding the chicken?? I thought it was just a silly joke.

SOmuchsparkle · 06/12/2020 06:57

Where is Pontefract???

BikeRunSki · 06/12/2020 07:00

I can confirm that Pontefract is in West Yorkshire, just off the M62. It has a very old castle that is worth a visit. The confectionary tradition continues, it is the home of Haribo. The factory HQ is a massive building next to the motorway and there’s a factory outlet shop in town.

CardoMondo · 06/12/2020 07:29

My french bulldog can clean himself!

CardoMondo · 06/12/2020 07:32

Oh ... I’ve got one.

Until I was in my 30s I thought Sinn Fein was the name of the guy in glasses (Later known as Gerry Adams) and that he was the leader of the IRA.

I am educated to degree level 😂

CardoMondo · 06/12/2020 07:33

And pontefract is near Leeds and has that famous haunted ex-council house
