Whoops - I meant DF.

I also have a sewing box - something I thought I would never want/need.

TrackandTrain · 05/12/2020 05:11

@theinternetmakesmyeyesfeelsick

DF has a plasticwashing basket thing that sits on a set of wheels and the whole ensemble looks like a pram- they bought it before I was 10 so it's about 50 years old now. Stops you having to bend down to pick up the washing when you're hanging it on the line.

He asked me if I want it the other day.

I bought one from Aldi about 3 years ago, I love it!
TrackandTrain · 05/12/2020 05:13

A carrier bag full of carrier bags

A cupboard full of unmatched plastic containers that avalanche out when you try to get one

DitherFlicker · 05/12/2020 05:15

A dehumidifier

londonscalling · 05/12/2020 05:23

Electric blanket. I love it!

Graphista · 05/12/2020 06:21

I always thought my parents were really sad for watching old TV shows on repeat over and over again and for only really listening to music from 20 or 30 years prior. Totally understand it now though

This I can relate to!

Drop the dead donkey, er and st elsewhere on my alll4 list, been watching (and shouting at a la dad!) question time and newsnight for several years now, absolute 80's (and sometimes 70's or classic rock Blush) are my radio stations now. I do know most of the top 20 artists...but that's mainly as they're almost all 20th century Xmas tracks at the moment, in a regular week I'd be clueless!

Big pants ✔️
Comfy slippers ✔️
Comfy full length pjs ✔️
Radio times subscription ✔️
Which? Membership ✔️(had to concede it wasn't fair keeping bugging parents to call which/check reviews for me ✔️

A cupboard that the Tupperware falls out of when you open it nope! Doesn't count! When you have a Tupperware cupboard that nothing falls out of cos it's all neatly stacked and has matching lids THEN you've turned into your mother ✔️ My mums collection predate me - I'm 48 and she still uses it!

Enough food in the cupboards and freezer to withstand a nuclear winter. ✔️ in my defence I'm housebound, and live in the west of Scotland in a location that means a nuclear winter is never that far away!

"They aren’t going to bring back rationing, mum!”, I would say, laughing

Then came 2020....."

Yep! I've been watching west wing lately and there was an episode where preppers were mocked for even touching on the possibility of a pandemic being reason to prep- hello!

I read that list and then “and a cuddly toy” popped into my head with that theme tune..now you given me an ear worm just as I am going to bed that really is showing our age! 😂😂😂

Bush and Ritchie on absolute 80's were talking "outdated cultural references the other day - Imelda Marcos as a nickname for shoe hoarders anyone under 40 even get that one?

Drawer of string, wire, and other bits of shit that I have no idea how it all gets there. ahhh yes Michael McIntyre calls it "the man drawer" generally contains dud lightbulbs, batteries and instruction booklets for items you no longer own! ✔️

mathanxiety · 05/12/2020 06:34

My mother never had anything practical or time saving or up to date for its time, by choice.

So I'm forced to dig deep here - I can own up to Harvey's Bristol Cream, Imperial Leather soap, and Coty L'Aimant perfume.

SabrinaThwaite · 05/12/2020 06:40

Fur lined zip up short boots.
Oil of Olay moisturiser (except it used to be Oil of Ulay).
A vast range of out-of-date tinned vegetables.
An ability to embarrass teenagers.

isthismylifenow · 05/12/2020 06:47

Folding shopping bags into triangles and then putting them into their own especially made bag, pop them in the top and take out the the bottom. When I sit there folding triangles, I feel like I have become my mother.

On the bag theme, keeping the fold up one in my handbag for emergencies. I also wondered what a bag emergency was, but use it all the time.

Pyrex dishes here too. You can get cheaper ones but they just don't last. I bought myself a new set last year and I was so sadly excited about them. My dd will understand one day as she said they are just dishes mum Smile

I bought crystal glasses too, and if one of the DC uses them they get the hairy eyeball from me. Every time I say, wash that after you're done with it, it can't go in the dishwasher. Drinks taste so much nicer from crystal glasses.

I don't live in the UK but my mum does and one year she sent me a m&s long sleeved vest in with my present. Both dd and I looked at this and thought my lawd this thing is ugly, who is going to wear that. It was during summer here then so I got put away. It got hauled out during winter and now dd and I argue about who is going to wear it. 😂. It the best piece of winter clothing I have. I will have to ask her to send dd her own I think..

Parkandride · 05/12/2020 06:54

A carrier bag of carrier bags, I always mocked this as a child. In face with the bag tax these days they're rare and I get quite worried about my dwindling stash

A sellotape dispenser

Stash of stamps, batteries, candles, light bulbs etc

TillyTopper · 05/12/2020 07:09

On a similar theme, I used to get really annoyed (but try not to say anything) when my mum used to know the handles of carrier bags. I know do the exact same thing!!

SnugglySnerd · 05/12/2020 07:13

Since we now have to teach at school with all the doors and wi does open I now not only own thermal vests but also tuck them into my trousers so "the cold doesn't catch me across there" as my mum loved to tell me for the whole of my teens and twenties. I told her about my new vests the other day. I think it was her proudest moment Grin

TheLightGetsIn · 05/12/2020 07:45

Navy tights

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 05/12/2020 08:28

Bedsocks, thermal vest "to keep my kidneys warm", "best" v everyday china and glasses, varifocals, stacked tupperware (usually reusable takeway plastic boxes but near enough to "proper" Tupperware), apron "pinny" (usually only worn at xmas when i'm juggling all the cooking tins), hyacinth bulbs planted up for Xmas and ... a scrabble dictionary!

However, I most definitely draw the line at getting a hostess trolley Grin

elvislives2012 · 05/12/2020 08:42

Oh man I have all the things on here (except for hotter shoes!)
Big pants
Long cardi
Walking boots
Dresser
Pressure cooker

I have it all. I AM ONLY 41!

Nominate for classics!

Chutneymaura · 05/12/2020 08:45

Those plastic clip things that you use to fasten freezer bags. Who knew how great they actually are 🤣

Maireas · 05/12/2020 08:45

Vests (not as "tops").
Cosy dressing gown.
Proper pyjamas.
Box of shortbread biscuits.

PoppyOppy · 05/12/2020 09:27

A powercut drawer. Containing torches, candles, matches. I used to roll my eyes as a child, now living in a place where we have frequent power outages it's a godsend.

I also keep a corkscrew in there too. Wink

notaflyingmonkey · 05/12/2020 09:54

My DD keeps putting my trifle bowl in the box waiting to go to charity, and wondering how it keeps appearing back in the kitchen cupboard.

DM once raised her eyebrows at the plastic bag holder that I was putting my folded up bags into after shopping and uttered the words 'Didn't you once say that life was too short for reusing carrier bags?'

Sara2000 · 05/12/2020 09:58

An automatic car.

I will never go back to a manual.

Enko · 05/12/2020 10:23

Neither dh or I can think of anything but I can say. Things my parents didn't have I would adamnet I would. A dishwasher

VinylDetective · 05/12/2020 10:42

@TheLightGetsIn

Navy tights
Seriously? I’ve worn them for decades. Probably before my mum did!
VestaTilley · 05/12/2020 12:24

Drinking sherry, wearing nighties, saying the thing about kidneys when putting DS in a vest, huge knickers, a love of gardening, having a child, listening to music from twenty years plus ago and watching reruns of ancient TV programmes (the BBC Archive on iplayer is amazing, and the full Desert Island Discs back catalogue is on BBC Sounds).

I have lots of the other old fashioned things like a sideboard, NT membership, glassware for different occasions, tablecloths etc - but I wanted those as a child as I assumed they were a part of adult life Grin

My DPs are happily still with us; I miss my DGrandmother’s a lot though, and think particularly of DGran nearly every day. I’d give anything for one last lunch with her at home.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 05/12/2020 12:26

I laughed my way through this thread — because I of course have no ‘only for best’ china etc — till I got up this morning and automatically put on a nice cosy bodywarmer. Identical to the old-lady ones my mum used to keep warm in! And I hadn’t even noticed till now.

I love these threads, lighthearted but they always give me something to think about.

VestaTilley · 05/12/2020 12:26

Oh, and all the Tupperware and hoarding carrier bags. I’m 34.
