V-shaped pillow. God I love it.

ssd · 06/12/2020 19:47

@maddiemookins16mum, 8 years here,totally agree.

Graphista · 06/12/2020 21:02

So sorry for all your lossesThanks

I really am dreading it! My grans both lived considerably longer than her age now but they were in better health until the very end for various reasons, just different lifestyles etc but I know she won't be here forever and it scares me. Only she and dd are the ones that really "get" me I don't really like to think about it

VinylDetective · 06/12/2020 21:06

Don’t dread it, just treasure every moment while she’s here, Graphista. Don’t spoil your todays worrying about a tomorrow that might be a long way into the future.

WildRosie · 06/12/2020 21:34

I've got matching sherry glasses but I don't remember whether or not these were M&D staples. Only two, mind, and no naff silver plated salver!

An old food container, lined with some sort of plastic bag and sat next to the kettle to collect used tea bags
Room spray
A net thing to put over your head to take clothes on & off overhead without trashing your make up or outfit
A spoon rest (which DM bought me)
A stick blender (was chuffed to inherit DGMs Moulinex)
A complete Delia Smith cookbook (another DGM inheritance)
A collection of old clothes, sheets & towels used as dusters or kept for mopping up, covering up etc.
A bag of carrier bags (I one-upped her with an actual bag tidy to her placcy bag of bags)
A bag of gift bags and padded envelopes
Packing lists
A list of all my passwords written down
Huge boobs (thanks mum)
Big knickers and spanx
A steam mop (I actually own DMs old one)
A couple of old washing up bowls kept for being sick into and handwashing
A glass nail file
A cool bag
A thermos
Bread in the freezer
Milk in the freezer
A sewing kit & button box - including a tapestry needle case made by my aunt, a pin cushion & a needle threader
Vinegar cleaning spray
WD40
A yard broom
Doing the crossword for fun
A tape measure in my handbag
A collection of old ice cream containers for tuppaware
A preferred calendar format and writing on it regularly
An address book- and I use it
A cards & stationery box

I have gone back to big pants too. Not all the time, but when I'm bloated; so comfy.

I lost my mum nearly 18 years ago, I get a bit glum, stressed and cranky at this time of year because this is when she got ill. My DF sent me a recipe I was looking for the other day, and it was in her handwriting. I had to go have a sit down for 5 mins. Sad

Ddot · 07/12/2020 13:37

Squeeze you skinny knickers

Ddot · 07/12/2020 13:39

Big washing up bowl to soak your tired feet

PhantomErik · 07/12/2020 13:43

Ettie yep I now own a black wool coat & 'funeral' top that I keep at the back of my wardrobe & hope I don't have to look at too often.

Over 30 years ago when I got married my MIL gave us a fancy address book with all my husbands side of the family all neatly written in.
A lot of those relatives including the in laws and my husband have died but I still have the address book written in my MIL ‘s best handwriting with amendment buy my husbands spider scrall.

umpteennamechanges · 07/12/2020 13:59

Also bone china mugs here.

Older people always said "Tea tastes better out of a bone china mug".

Tasted absolutely no different to me.

Then...all of a sudden when I hit roughly 36 it DID.

I mean WTF is that all about?

What a nice thing to have. I still have my parents’ address book and the sight of their writing gets me every time.

TheLightGetsin
I love navy tights! 😱

RosesAndHellebores · 07/12/2020 21:17

I have a nasty feeling my mother and I have always been in reverse.

I have always liked comfortable shoes and a nice cardigan - with a string of pearls. Mother used to arrive at school in a mini dress and white boots. I so wanted her to be like the other mums in a nice skirt and cardigan - the trendy ones had Dr Scholls.

She still wears leather trousers and heels - she's 84! Most things on this thread are anathema to her; whereas I think I bought myself a proper sewing box at about 25.

Ddot · 07/12/2020 21:45

Tin of buttons

minou123 · 07/12/2020 22:02

@TiptopJ

This isn't really what you're asking but I always thought my parents were really sad for watching old TV shows on repeat over and over again and for only really listening to music from 20 or 30 years prior. Totally understand it now though
Yes! I can imagine myself at the age of 70 saying "Come on kids, Smack My Bitch Up is classic"

In the same theme - I used to think my mum was so sad for being excited about the weather being nice so she can hang the washing out.
I caught myself a couple of summers ago, specifically doing some laundry because it was a hot day and I could hang it on the line Blush

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 07/12/2020 22:19

Nothing that I can think of, but there are loads of things that my parents used to do and say that I find myself doing and saying now. I promised myself I wouldn't turn into either of them, yet here I am slowly morphing into a combination.

Ddot · 07/12/2020 22:46

Someone said hotter boots are awful, haha I like em. I think you need to take a better look. I agree some are very nana! but some are great. Well I think so. No I'm not naff, I wear docs too

Whateverimgettingcheesefries · 07/12/2020 23:06

Butter dish
Trifle bowl
Little measuring spoons for baking
Pyrex
Big knickers
Comfy shoes
Waterproof coat (or just a coat in general, teenage me never wore a coat, it wasn’t cool Grin)
Thermals

Whateverimgettingcheesefries · 07/12/2020 23:07

@Ddot

Yes to the button tin!!

Whateverimgettingcheesefries · 07/12/2020 23:11

Another one I’ve jus remembered is a Moulinex rotary cheese grater. I love it!

MrsToothyBitch · 08/12/2020 07:59

I forgot the milk jug I now own as well! I always knew one day I'd have a butter dish and probably a gravy boat (DM gave me one from her hoard) but teenage me was sure she'd never have a milk jug. I introduced her to measuring cups though- she has my old set!

I am also the navy tights wearer out of the pair of us. And I recently realised I should buy a dark coat - in case of funerals.

The address book thing is interesting. I'm 30 and I've had an address book since I went to uni - so when I no longer had easy access to my parents one. I'm pretty sure most of my friends would never see the point in owning one ... but I am the person they alway ask for addresses when they CBA to surf through months worth of WhatsApp chat or Uber receipts to find them!

letsgomaths · 08/12/2020 08:12

I swore I'd never wear plimsolls again, after them being a fixture of school PE. Guess what I like wearing on my feet now...

I also remember solemnly swearing (aged 10) that I would never drink alcohol. I did keep my vow never to smoke, though.
