Christmas Decorations

Manolinette · 04/12/2020 17:09

In our village we always have a bit of light-hearted fun with decorations. There is a statue in the village square and it gets decorated with a different but topical theme each year, think Harry Potter, Women’s Institute, etc. It’s one of those where everyone wakes up and no body knows who does it. A bit ‘Banksy’ like. This year it is our turn to host the Christmas Eve mince pies and punch, which is also topical themed but obviously we can’t do that now only virtually by Zoom. I was going to have on the side and in the punch bowl, some small round oranges and Brussels’ sprouts with cloves pushed in to make it look like a Coronavirus. Do you think this is in bad taste or do you think it’s a bit of humour and we all need a bit of a laugh now?

It's bad taste there has been 60 thousand deaths.

Thatwentbadly · 04/12/2020 17:17

There will be people in your village who have lost loved ones to corona virus. Their first Christmas without them will be hard enough.

livinlavida · 04/12/2020 17:17

Um - you realise how many people worldwide have died from this?
Horrifically bad taste - gross.

JillofTrades · 04/12/2020 17:20

This is disgusting and shame on you that you would even think of doing tthis as humor.

ForTheLoveOfCatFood · 04/12/2020 17:21

Bad taste in both senses

BecomeStronger · 04/12/2020 17:21

I'm not sure I'd get the joke but I'd find it mildly amusing once I'd had it explained.

Judging by PPs though it's almost certain to cause someone to be offended so probably best not.

Undies1990 · 04/12/2020 17:23

Don't do that. Please.

Manolinette · 04/12/2020 17:23

Oh wow. I wasn't expecting that. It is a small village and nobody has lost anyone and we do not go on social media much or anything. I had better suggest we rethink it all, even the statue as you don't want to know about that now.

I am puzzled though as the voting is 60% YANBU Confused

I would hope that as you know the 'guests' and their circumstances that it would be fine. Not tasteless, just a bit of fun in my eyes.
There are worse gags about it than a bowl of punch!

JillofTrades · 04/12/2020 17:26

It doesn't matter that no one there has died, its more that something horrible is currently happening and people are dying currently. Just because you all don't know anyone doesn't mean that it's a big joke to make light of.

inappropriateraspberry · 04/12/2020 17:27

'If you don't laugh, you'll cry!'

Manolinette · 04/12/2020 17:28

@inappropriateraspberry
Sorry?!? What do you mean?

And how are you managing to host these while staying in the guidelines? Just with your Christmas bubble, or 6 of you?? I know it’s covid police/not my business etc but taking the piss with your theme and ignoring guidance is a bit much I think

nancybotwinbloom · 04/12/2020 17:32

It's a well known saying.

It means make the best of a bad situation.
Keep your spirits up type of thing

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/12/2020 17:33

You know your guests. Some people try to inject some humour into all of this to deal with it. There is a famous bakery in my family's city (not UK) which makes covid cakes in a shape of covid. They had massively positive response to it.

Orangedaisy · 04/12/2020 17:34

I can’t understand how this works by zoom, if you have these surely people will be with you??

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/12/2020 17:34

Re read the OP

@SchrodingersImmigrant I did. Still don’t get it!! Maybe the imagery has made me finally flip. Like I didn’t I long time ago

It's on zoom. I'd think it was amusing and yes I do know people who have suffered from the virus and 2 who died
hollyandkit · 04/12/2020 17:36

What's the statue going to be??

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/12/2020 17:37

Well logical assumption from the OP is that everyone buys their own pies and drinks and logs into zoom. Op planned on having this as a decoration around her.

Orangedaisy · 04/12/2020 17:38

So they’re supposed to see Clove spiked sprouts on a zoom screen, and op too.... they must have much bigger screens and resolution in the lovely tiny covid free village than in my life. Really could you be arsed for a zoom thing....

As far as I know there are currently no size restrictions on Zoom meetings. It raises interesting dystopian possibilities though.
Orangedaisy · 04/12/2020 17:39

@LadyAcony ok I stand down. Had a bad day!
