Christmas Decorations

In our village we always have a bit of light-hearted fun with decorations. There is a statue in the village square and it gets decorated with a different but topical theme each year, think Harry Potter, Women’s Institute, etc. It’s one of those where everyone wakes up and no body knows who does it. A bit ‘Banksy’ like. This year it is our turn to host the Christmas Eve mince pies and punch, which is also topical themed but obviously we can’t do that now only virtually by Zoom. I was going to have on the side and in the punch bowl, some small round oranges and Brussels’ sprouts with cloves pushed in to make it look like a Coronavirus. Do you think this is in bad taste or do you think it’s a bit of humour and we all need a bit of a laugh now?

Just to be clear, the statue is toppled and we are going to push him in the village stream. Like they did in Amerixa

That’s this years theme, then we’ll drag him out for next year.

Where the feck is this village? It feels a bit Midsomer Murdery to me..

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 04/12/2020 23:13

Tubbs is that you?

myhobbyisouting · 04/12/2020 23:30

Is the theme now BLM protests? Confused

I couldn't be doing with the village busybodies meeting on the green to decide I was having a jacket spud for Christmas Eve and going on zoom. I'd rather have a covid sprout tbh

malificent7 · 05/12/2020 01:25

Ors not bad taste...its a bit of dark humour...id be ok with it but im used to it...I work in a hospital where dark humour = survival.

malificent7 · 05/12/2020 01:27

Its*

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 05/12/2020 01:31

@Carlislemumof4

What a depressing way to spend Christmas Eve!
Oh do tell us all what you're doing...
WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 05/12/2020 01:34

I'd rather have punch than a jacket pitato 😂

MindyStClaire · 05/12/2020 04:09

Shock Surely this is a joke I'm not getting? You're not actually belittling the BLM movement for Christmas Eve family fun?

I think you could have fun alluding to the he craziness of this year, but don't go with the actual virus, that's a bit crass. Do loo roll snowmen, Santa in a mask etc.

Nicolastuffedone · 05/12/2020 04:52

I think this may be not quite true, eh OP😉?

Sargass0 · 05/12/2020 05:54

Aren't villages normally full of swingers?

Swap your coronavirus theme and use gonorrhea instead -recreate the gonorrhea bacteria by sticking lots of cocktail sticks all over your oranges. Slightly less controversial I'd say. Am sure there is some STD that you could fashion out of the sprouts...

Any newcomers to the village? (bonus points if they're a bit old and wear a black pointy hat)
Make them feel welcome by hanging their name around the statue, arranging lots of firewood around the plinth and setting it alight whilst you all stand around drinking punch (socially distanced) shouting "burn"

You really do need to be more creative -tut!

Oblomov20 · 05/12/2020 06:03

I think it's totally ok. I can't grasp all the posters saying not.
All my friends are laughing at the latest Facebook thing doing the rounds aswell :
Now Corona Christmas Album.
I think it's really funny.

Sargass0 · 05/12/2020 06:44

It feels a bit Midsomer Murdery to me.

It sounds darker than that!

Wonder if the pub is called The Slaughtered Lamb...

Bluntness100 · 05/12/2020 08:58

Why don’t you just do something nice? Why does it need to be weird? I very much doubt anyone thinks it’s funny other than you and your family/friends.

Do a Santa Claus bringing the gift of joy or something.

It’s just all too try hard.

inappropriateraspberry · 05/12/2020 09:13

What is it a statue of? Because that could be bad taste dumping an important figure in the river. Or is it an empty space that you put a statue on each Christmas? I don't quite understand that bit.

DappledThings · 05/12/2020 09:27

What is it a statue of?

I think OP will only be back to answer that question when she's decided that detail in this fantasy.

Manolinette · 05/12/2020 09:40

What is it a statue of?

The real figure I cannot say or that would out us as he is the only statue in the world. In our village. We are going to dress him up as Captain Jack Sparrow now. Reading a newspaper.

Sargass0 · 05/12/2020 09:49

Everyone goes off to Google "rare statues"

I think I know which one it is- you'd have been better just making up something random if you didn't want to be outed.

hahaha Johnny Depp libel case.... that's edgy

MistyGreenAndBlue · 05/12/2020 11:13

Ah. You went too far. 😂
