Is this a shit present?

I am struggling what to get my DM for Christmas. So far she has some perfume and a box of sweets from the grand kids. I was thinking a nice cashmere scarf and gloves? Is it a bit shit? Shes 65(ish [hmmm] ) if that makes a difference?

Have you seen Turtle Doves recycled cashmere? My dd bought me a lovely jacket from them last year.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/12/2020 17:03

What she almost certainly wants most is quality time with you and any grandchildren if relevant.

Don't think you have to spend a lot of money on 'things', she's had 65 years to accumulate more stuff than she could ever need and is unlikely to want more.

Cheese, booze or meals out with you are probably far more to her taste.

thegreylady · 04/12/2020 17:04

Snap! I posted after page 1 and my post is directly under another recommending the same company!

SmilingAloe · 04/12/2020 17:09

I got my mum some posh sweets and jams and chutneys from fortnum and mason that I know she loves but only gets at Christmas, a cosy lounge wear type top for around the house, some specific posh bubble bath that she requested and a bottle of champagne. My parents are very vulnerable to covid and not really going anywhere so I thought nice stuff she can enjoy at home would be good this year.

  • Coffee machine? Amazon has one of those small, simple pod ones with boxes of pods for £45 (I can link if you like)

Seconding the Bloom & Wild sub, but only if she actually likes fresh flowers. Some people aren’t bothered, whilst some (like me) absolutely love them and a fresh bunch makes a difference.

SlightlyJaded · 04/12/2020 17:12

I like the idea of the Flower Subscription as per a PP.

I would LOVE to get fresh flowers delivered on a regular basis.

HiyaMeAgain · 04/12/2020 17:12

Thanks everyone, Some great ideas.

I think I am definitely going to go down the flowers/ garden route.

It’s fine OP

I got DM a fair isle bonnet with matching gloves, yes she has a hat and gloves already but it’s very pretty, from a small Scottish company (I think Grin maybe they drop ship from China and it’s acrylic Shock noooooo ) and I think she’ll like it

Am too mentally drained to think of an original gift Sad

GingerScallop · 04/12/2020 17:15

I thought that's what you meant too.

A tablet? What are her hobbies?

SirMoanalot · 04/12/2020 17:17

How are we supposed to know if she'll think it's shit? You know her!

RB68 · 04/12/2020 17:20

For my Mum and MIL I used to get all sorts but some ideas

Magazine sub
Flowers or Bulbs planted up - MIL used to love some hyacinths or mini daffs to watch appear.
My Mum used to like nice china and didnt mind a second hand couple of tea cups and milk and sugar pots with a box of nice tea
Gloves all ways useful as you loose them
Picture frames were popular with a few photos to go in
Slippers and or decent socks (woolly ones to keep feet warm rather than skinny ones)
My Mum liked a good lipstick or face cream etc
At 65 don't think she is in the range of hankies and talc yet

I've just bought a Young Person a scarf ... It's amazingly lovely, well beyond the amount they'd ever spend on themselves for clothing and, most importantly there's a reason for this particular thing. If they genuinely hate it I'll be happy to exchange it - but I hope they'll be pleased.

Do you really not know your mother's exact age, OP? Xmas Grin I don't think a scarf is a shit present, but I'd only be excited about a specific scarf I'd already picked out. And - at just a few years younger than your parent - I would despise anything that came with the word "nice" attached to it. I like wild extravagance, extreme craftsmanship, the cutting edge - in everything. Is your scarf exciting???

Make up your own gardening hamper.
Decent trowel and some gloves, padded kneeler, Gardeners World subscription, secateurs etc and you could get a nice trug or pot to put it all in.

Hiya I made a similar one up for my uncle from my parents years ago. He loved it. You could add a nice mug for use in the garden too.

@KarmaStar

Before you buy cashmere, read the PETA web page on how the hair is gathered, you might change your mind op and opt for something ethical. Otherwise, gifts sound thoughtful.
This Its sickening. Vile
