To turn down a 3x salary job?

I'm really really torn. Earlier in the year I got offered a job that pays £60k. I couldn't take it as it required relocation. They just got back to me to say they're happy to offer same role, different location but within commuting distance (1 hour drive). My current job pays £21k. I love what I'm building with it but I seriously doubt it will ever get beyond £30k. So it's between loving my company/job and the £££s. I'm absolutely torn.

This is such a huge opportunity. Its very rare indeed to get offered a jump from 20k to 60k - well done!

Once you take a 60k job so many other job opportunities are open to you. You can easily walk into another 60k job, for example.

Such a big change will also improve your lifestyle and financial stability.

Hayyancairo2 · 03/12/2020 18:20

In that case, I'd take it. Definitely.

blowinahoolie · 03/12/2020 18:32

No offence Ironingonthefence but that's just seriously creepy calling out the OP's search history. I hadn't even thought of this, just took the thread at face value, tbh.

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 18:42

Well also the jobs have to be there. When I was made redundant I want able to find a job that paid the same. This is the first one (2 years after being made redundant).

So I know what's it's like to be a high earner. I once was one (which is what landed this job).

blowinahoolie · 03/12/2020 18:42

Sorry, Ironingontheceiling😂

tigerbear · 03/12/2020 18:43

What @Ironingontheceiling and @chomalungma said. Both have made very valid points.
The OP has disclosed a HUGE amount of very identifying information on here in the last few weeks. Her previous thread didn’t exactly cast her in the best light.
If I were Amazon (or her current employer) it wouldn’t take much to identify who the OP is in real life, and I’m sure they’d take a dim view of OP sharing so much re pay, offer, and the pros and cons of accepting.
You don’t know who might be reading this, so it may be best to get MNHQ to delete it.

I’m a headhunter, and I’d be livid if anyone I’d offered a role to on behalf of one of my clients shared so much detail on a public forum. You might find that the offer is retracted, if you’re not careful!

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 18:49

I still haven't said anything that it's not readily available on Glassdoor/Indeed.

OP posts:
Caplin · 03/12/2020 18:51

I’ve known people do that role for Amazon. It is an amazing opportunity and they do pay very well. But they will work you hard due to pace of business. Lots of people burn out and they aren’t too bothered by turnover. They expect people to leave within a couple of years.

But, everyone who has worked there has said it was a great experience, they learnt tons and it made them very desirable career wise.

So I would go for it, get your head down for a couple of years and let it catapult your career.

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 18:59

I'm going to talk to my manager tomorrow morning and see what he says. Super nice guy who's very business minded.

OP posts:
shuttheblinds · 03/12/2020 19:01

I personally wouldn’t work for Amazon for any amount of money. They are terrible to work for. Be careful OP I understand the money is tempting but being unhappy at work is not worth it.

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 19:03

Also I appreciate the people who say I'd catapult my career. But I've already been fairly senior. My previous role paid in that range and by now I guess it would be better. I've already got a good/decent CV but there aren't that many opportunities where I live.

OP posts:
Ratatcat · 03/12/2020 19:04

On the face of it you were mad to accept £21k given your experience. I think your current company are taking the absolute piss if that is all you are paying and they’ve got you on a path to head of/director. I pay interns with no experience that. I get that it would have been hard post redundancy but I think you undervalued your skills and value.

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 19:11

That year where I had to jump from job to job because I couldn't find anything (I was a KP, pollster, and a receptionist). It was horrible and lead to a very depressed period. Then I got this job, liked the company, was gratefu
l to be office based, etc...

My current manager says that it almost unbelievable that I have

OP posts:
Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 19:12

Such valuable skills and that I ended up with them. Bar the salary they do look after me but I'm in a completely different mental state so I think of be a lot better to negotiate.

The problems are mainly with warehouse staff though aren't they? OP could save money and then use some of it to help people later on, I suppose. I think the main downside is that it's working nights. You're more susceptible to cancer if you work nights. It's unhealthy and not sociable.
Ironingontheceiling · 03/12/2020 19:25

@blowinahoolie

Sorry, Ironingontheceiling😂
Next name change right there 😂😂😂

I just remember the op. Her dp didn’t sound great tbh.

dhisreadingmypostsagain · 03/12/2020 19:32

@AllTheUserNamesAreTaken this made me laugh 😂😂

umpteennamechanges · 03/12/2020 19:36

@Fressia123

For the first time it's about job satisfaction and not the money. In the not very far future, I'll be building my own team managing and heading a whole division of my company. It's also an industry I absolutely adore (music!) And I know title wise being Director / Head of whatever is going to look awesome too.

Having recently left a ££££ job I think I'd go against the grain and say not to take it.

Not if they are going to take a pound of flesh and not if you're doing something you love.

You can't underestimate the stress that's caused by working very hard on something that isn't you, you don't particularly like and that isn't in line with your values.

Some things are worth more than money and I say that as someone who has given up six figures!

Ironingontheceiling · 03/12/2020 19:37

@Fressia123 what does your partner think?

Ironingontheceiling · 03/12/2020 19:38

Also, don’t you have an older,daughter? Who you share custody of with your ex? How are you going to be able to see her if you are doing this job? Not to say you shouldn’t do it but you need to think about it

FrancoBranco · 03/12/2020 19:38

I remember your last thread where your current company gave you a derisory raise paired with a huge amount of extra responsibility. Take the new job. Come back to your current company in 2 years at a much higher level.

chomalungma · 03/12/2020 20:02

@Fressia123

I still haven't said anything that it's not readily available on Glassdoor/Indeed.
So you talk about moving to a new company and you're not sure if you'll take it even though it's a lot of money on those websites?

If your future employer (Amazon) were reading this, would they be able to identify you and learn anything they didn't already know?

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 20:58

@chomalungma no they wouldn't.

Yes I have an older daughter which given my shift I would still be able to collect, take to her after-school lessons etc...

My current job has tons of responsibility but that's only because it's geared to become head of/director. I only got explained this after meeting my new manager.

In reality I'd only do it for the £££. DP says don't take it, you're passionate about your industry we'd spend less to.e together it's really a no brainer.

Yea nicer house/car but with a hefty price tag.

After reading all of your replies and especially this I would say don’t take it. Your heart belongs where you are now.
