To turn down a 3x salary job?

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 11:33

I'm really really torn. Earlier in the year I got offered a job that pays £60k. I couldn't take it as it required relocation. They just got back to me to say they're happy to offer same role, different location but within commuting distance (1 hour drive). My current job pays £21k. I love what I'm building with it but I seriously doubt it will ever get beyond £30k. So it's between loving my company/job and the £££s. I'm absolutely torn.

If you take the new job, what will you do in terms of childcare?

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 21:36

Childcare is exactly the same. DP.wpuld take baby to nursery bid collect him and the older children

Your current company are taking the piss paying you £21K. Our apprentices earn more than that.

kirinm · 03/12/2020 21:44

I was offered a job that was about a £30k pay rise and I turned it down. I couldn't explain why really, it was genuinely a gut feeling. They approached me again recently and I've said no again. I don't love my current job and I would love the payrise but I couldn't do it.

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 22:00

I think it's all down to location. They know I'm lucky to have me. Obvioy the job offer is prove of that.

Ironingontheceiling · 03/12/2020 22:02

Not really just that though.

Amazon run people to the ground.

But your current company are taking the piss.

Audreyseyebrows · 03/12/2020 23:18

So stay! You’ve been on more money and know that happiness is more important.
Whammyyammy · 03/12/2020 23:45

Take the 60k job. Get experience on a role at that salary and it opens up further and often higher salary roles.

sansou · 03/12/2020 23:55

Remind yourself why you even bothered to apply for another job.

dayslikethese1 · 04/12/2020 03:14

Why is your current salary only 21k if it's that much responsibility/that senior? This is tricky, if your current salary was decent I'd say stay if you love it but seems very low.

Istheyearoveryet21 · 04/12/2020 03:17

Why on earth is your salary that low if so much responsibility and a senior role. You current company do no respect you at all -leave.

Topseyt · 04/12/2020 03:32

So stay put, but negotiate for a better pay rise.

Don't have tunnel vision about the higher salary you are being offered. There may be a reason why these jobs seem to keep coming up. Amazon aren't known for treating their workforce that well and could run you into the ground.

whittingtonmum · 04/12/2020 05:46

Amazon has an absolutely terrible reputation how it treats its workers, plus all the not paying taxes on huge profits etc. I would think long and hard if you wanted to become a manager in that kind of corporate culture. Especially if you experienced burn out in the past. If you are not desperate for the money and are happy with your job I would stay put. If you are really keen for more money I would make a career plan but would try to avoid Amazon like the plague. I saw this campaign launched last week: makeamazonpay.com

Fressia123 · 04/12/2020 06:44

My current salary is very low because of their own internal policies. They very rarely hire externally and prefer to promote internally.

As I got in with an entry level job o think they thought it wouldn't go well with the rest of my colleagues that I made a massive jump when the rest didn't /hadn't have those opportunities.

That's my theory anyways.

OP posts:
Ironingontheceiling · 04/12/2020 07:08

I think they’re taking the piss. If they have a role with a promotion for you they should pay you properly. They haven’t. They’ve taken the piss.

But. Amazon aren’t great to work for either. They have their reputation for a reason and those level jobs are always always advertised. Which tells you something.

Fressia123 · 04/12/2020 07:13

I think the big salary jump will come once I have the new title. In this region anything above £35k is considered a very very good salary. I'm happy with £30k and it doesn't have to happen tomorrow.

OP posts:
AcrobaticCardigan · 04/12/2020 07:29

What is there to think about? Such a jump in salary will be life changing! No doubt they’ll expect a lot from you, but you can always move on after a year or two if you’re unhappy.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 04/12/2020 07:36

Lol at the faux high minded Amazon I’d never work for Amazon outrage
It’s a systems operational post for a multinational company not selling crack at the school gate
So either you stay underpaid or you change job and increase salary

user1494050295 · 04/12/2020 07:41

Agreed take the job. At that jump a whole lot more opportunities for the taking. Go for it.

Fressia123 · 04/12/2020 07:48

I get what everyone is saying about the opportunities and maybe having Amazon on my CV will drastically improve things. But back then when I was made redundant with a similar salary and a CV that I thought anyone would be too stupid not to hire me I didn't see any doors open. Of anything it closed doors as I was seen as overqualified and the lack of industry in this region doesn't help. So I do struggle to see what else it could bring?

OP posts:
Ironingontheceiling · 04/12/2020 07:53

Have you done permanent nights before? (It is permanent nights, isn’t it?)

silverfonze · 04/12/2020 07:53

I'd never work for an unethical company like Amazon or revolut
Go to Glassdoor and read the reviews !!

If the employee experience is so bad that the public know about it, it will be even worse internally

Heard awful stories from people at both companies above. Turnover at Revolut is average time served 8-10months and insider told me.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 04/12/2020 08:00

In a first world capitalist economy all companies are unethical to a greater or lesser extent. The pursuit of profits and margins and market mean there are all sorts practices going on
No one is squeaky clean
It’s lazy and stereotypically outraged middle class to bemoan Amazon, announcing how you don’t support them, never buy from them blah blah

Amazon employ a lot of people, offer a Flexibility previously unavailable and have distribution centres in areas that need the jobs

By all means chi’s echinacea you shop with
But do not apply lazy cliches to virtue signal how ethical you are

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 04/12/2020 08:03

By all Means chose who you shop with
