Two of my friends have taken to posting gym selfies.

One has not long had her baby and hit the gym hard, which I applaud. She has taken her wellbeing seriously but I can’t help but think she doesn’t need to post pictures on social media. It’s like a stealth brag. Particularly showing off images of her stomach and she’s wearing a full face of makeup whilst in gym gear.

Another friend has became gym obsessed in the last year. Again I think lockdown might have been a big catalyst but she constantly posts on Facebook about fitness. Constant selfies in the gym. Constant posts about calories, what she’s eaten etc. It’s becoming tedious.

I don’t want to have to unfriend them online. The selfie culture and what I feel is stealth bragging has just became annoying now. Yes, I get that you’re looking well. I recognise you are taking positive steps to maintain your health and well-being but please can you stop posting about your amazing body.

And no I’m not jealous, I’m a size 8 myself. I just hate people who feel the need to show off. Tell me I’m not the only one

Some times these pictures help as a reference point to how you are doing, i see countless folks with problems posting pictures as they achieve a goal. try to change the way you look at the pictures. Try saying " good for you" etc

This us why I stopped using I'm. It's become less about keeping in touch with each other and more about vanity and stealth brags which I have no time for. Which is a shame for the few who do use it to keep in touch with friends afar and close by.

DimJim · 06/12/2020 06:30

you completely missed the point. they are staying in touch. they are showing each other how well they are doing. they are not being vain etc etc etc

Feministicon · 06/12/2020 10:24

And so what if it is vanity? God forbid.

PrincessNutNutRoast · 06/12/2020 10:41

"There's so little humility now, how awful. Good thing the world still has superior people like me. I would never post a gym selfie or show off my body (which obviously looks good because I'm a gym goer, as I told you), to bring the world some much-needed humility! It's so morally dubious to share a pic of yourself on a cross trainer, but spiteful and mean-spirited online pile-ons to tear people down, that's what Good People do! Oh, my wonderful humility and morality!"

if you havent done it dont knock it. Its not like doing drugs etc. I posted two pictures, the first of me having heart surgery and the second 6 months later in the gym, i had nothing but compliments . i think a few of you really are missing the point. sorry !

And so what if it is vanity? God forbid.

That's fine but it's also ok to criticise it.

Changi · 06/12/2020 14:18

Isn't criticism a form of judgement?

One of MN's cardinal sins.

TrailingLobelias · 06/12/2020 14:25

@Merryweather80 when I emigrated and was trying to put on a brave face and show the positives even though I was absolutely miserable, a friend told me it was insensitive with so many in our circles having such a terrible time that I was bragging about being in a nice warm country enjoying myself. I realised then that I was contributing to this sense that a lot of people have that everyone's life is better than their own. And also giving the impression that I wasn't getting home from work at bedtime and not eating and crying a lot. I only share interesting historical things now.

baffledfornow · 06/12/2020 14:35

Isn't criticism a form of judgement?

Apparently it's dependent on who you are judging, I mean no one has an issue with judging Trump.

One of MN's cardinal sins.

If that were the case AIBU wouldn't even exist.
