To say it's QUEUE, not QUE?

Every time I see "que" on here, all I can think about is Manuel in Fawlty Towers.

It's a sodding QUEUE.

OP posts:
HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 02/12/2020 23:42

Broadly on topic, does anyone else find that the current Disaronno advert makes their teeth itch? I can’t abide it!

JynnannTonnyk · 02/12/2020 23:46

@ImWearingReallyJudgyPants

I saw a chest of drawers advertised on Facebook Marketplace as, simply, a "Chester" *@LindaEllen*

I am, admittedly, a terrible old pedant - but some things are beyond mere pedantry.

Like adding totally unnecessary words, separated, with a comma, like this?
WeatherwaxOn · 02/12/2020 23:47

Saw someone looking for "Chrismass Reefs" earlier today on a social media site.
And 'bawbuls'

veryveryfine · 02/12/2020 23:48

How about colder sack instead of cul de sac?!

GlummyMcGlummerson · 02/12/2020 23:50

@ReeseWitherfork

Que?
I'm so annoyed someone else said this before me 😂
SonjaMorgan · 02/12/2020 23:52

Lose/loose, wierd, alot, could of...

Pinkywoo · 02/12/2020 23:58

I keep seeing wondering and wandering being mixed up recently, and I really hate "alot", it's two bloody words!

Cooroo · 03/12/2020 00:12

Barbecue - says who? Says me. Because barbeque is pronounced barbeck. As I said.

JynnannTonnyk · 03/12/2020 00:13

@ivfbabymomma1

It's allowed not aloud!!!!!!

Wow I needed to say that

Could you take one of the exclamation marks from your first paragraph and stick it after your wow? And maybe steal a spare full stop from someone else's post to complete your second paragraph?

I know you can. I meant to ask if you will. Thank you.

Comtesse · 03/12/2020 06:11

When someone gets a bit fancy and wants to use “voila” but instead writes “viola”, I gnash my teeth I am afraid to say. It is petty, I know. String instruments are not a good rhetorical flourish.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 03/12/2020 06:12

I’ve seen it written as Wallah.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 03/12/2020 06:28

@FanGurrl

Not seen it here, but in texts 'your' seems to be replacing 'you'll.' For example, 'Your be pleased to go out now lockdown is over.' It drives me mad!
I know someone who does that. She also uses R for I'll Confused. Took me ages to work out who R was and why they would be late picking my DC up!
LongPauseNoAnswer · 03/12/2020 06:36

Noone.

I absolutely cannot read it as no one. It’s a surname in Ireland and I will always read it that way.

Yes to draws. Makes me scream inside. Add to that “borrow me”. I never say anything or never would because I understand that not everyone has the same level of education but I will always be irritated by it.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 03/12/2020 06:41

I don’t judge - there are plenty of potential extenuating circumstances like Dyslexia, a less than optimum education, or second/third language.

It’s more that it just sets my teeth on edge.

BritWifeinUSA · 03/12/2020 07:04

Pacific/specific...

Saw and seen. I feel itchy when I read “I seen some shoes I like but...”

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/12/2020 07:08

Not spelling as such, but any post beginning, ‘So me and dh (or whoever)...’. sends my pedant’s grump-ometer soaring.

Ditto, or even more so, ‘So myself and dh...’

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/12/2020 07:12

I also keep seeing things on here such as "He was been really annoying" or "Seen as I already went to the shops" instead of the -ing. WHY?

See also: rediculous instead of ridiculous - spellcheck flags that up.
I don't like these composite words that have appeared either - 'alot', 'abit' do get flagged up by the spellcheck, so why proceed?

Those of us with neurodiversities that are not dyslexia do struggle with poorly written posts; I waste time rewriting it in my head, and sometimes I can't read them at all because there's no punctuation. Transposition of letters is OK but 'your' in place of 'you're' really grates.
In my accent lose/loose sound different so I don't know why they get muddled; you don't see chose/choose swapped about as much.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/12/2020 07:15

@sbhydrogen

Who spells it like "que"? 🤯
Lots of people on here. But people also use it when they actually mean cue. It's not an English word so doesn't need to be used unless posting in Spanish or French.
twentyfourth · 03/12/2020 07:16

@ivfbabymomma1

It's allowed not aloud!!!!!!

Wow I needed to say that

Surely that depends
Bikingbear · 03/12/2020 07:24

@HollyandIvyandallthingsYule

I don’t judge - there are plenty of potential extenuating circumstances like Dyslexia, a less than optimum education, or second/third language.

It’s more that it just sets my teeth on edge.

Exactly its estimated 10% of the population are dyslexic, and then as you say there are people who don't have English as first language.

I'm surprised that 92% have agreed with the OP. But there again maybe the majority of dyslexics can't be bothered opening spelling threads.

Queue doesn't usually pop up on the predicted words just to make life harder for those not in the know.

Crappyfridays7 · 03/12/2020 07:31

The people who can’t spell due to dyslexia don’t always know if a word is wrong. I can’t tell sometimes if it’s the correct spelling/way of spelling for whatever I’m writing so generally I’d not know if was wrong, but I’m SO glad you all are laughing at me and people like me because of it.

There are people who come on here with various levels of education, learning difficulties and English as a second language whose spelling etc is not great but you can usually understand what they are trying to say. There are often posts in text type speak that I find completely indecipherable or have been written quickly when anxious or upset. I sometimes despair of people correcting SPAG on those yes it may make your teeth itch or upset you but in the scheme of things is it really ok to make the op feel bad about it or derail the thread by commenting on another poster because of it?..it is pedantic & unkind to be mocking others level of education because you can spell and someone else finds it difficult

EggysMom · 03/12/2020 07:32

As I spend a lot of time on disability fora, I see "rest bite" (respite) a good deal. Normally when people are saying that they don't get any. Part of me wonders if they'd have more success if they asked for the right thing ... (or 'ksed 4 the write thing)

SoupDragon · 03/12/2020 07:33

Was this meant to be criticising the post you quoted or was it just a general whinge? There's nothing wrong with the quoted post.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 03/12/2020 07:45

Yes quite, there was nothing at all wrong with it.

EggysMom · 03/12/2020 07:48

^Was this meant to be criticising the post you quoted or was it just a general whinge?*

I read it, like, as if it were a general whinge, like, written in the style of the whinge, like.
