To hate going to the hairdressers?

I just hate it. I don't find it relaxing at all.

I hate being trapped in the chair for hours, having to make awkward small talk with the receptionists, assistant and hairdresser, staring at myself in the mirror, having to fob off the endless attempts to flog me products and expensive treatments, smiling and nodding at the end while they gush about how great my hair looks (are they complimenting me or themselves? I mean, I've just been sat on my arse scrolling Mumsnet for hours while they've done all the work?) and then fiddling about with tips for everyone at the end.

But today took the absolute biscuit. I went in for my once-yearly colour and ended up there for five hours. It killed my entire day. I had so many errands I was supposed to run today and had to bin my entire To Do list. I literally walked out in the middle of the blow dry so I could be on time to pick up my son from nursery.

I have no idea what they were doing for so long. They kept putting goop in my hair, washing a bit out, adding more goop, putting me under the heater thing, combing through, adding more goop etc etc. After 3 hours I asked how much longer it was going to take and my eyes nearly popped out of my head when they said 1.5 hours. It ended up taking a further 2.

And my hair looks almost exactly the same.

Dear hairdresser, this is massively obvious who I am if you read this - I'm sorry. I just hate going to the hairdressers!

Small talk and facing a mirror yes this is why I hate it too. More often than not, I've hated what they've done and don't like how they blow dry my my fringe and part in the wrong way. Of course I always tip them and say I love it before going home to cry Grin

After a disastrous layered bob, with a fringe that went right round my head Confused I lighten my blonde bob at home and cut it myself now.

PicsInRed · 02/12/2020 19:31

I loathe the hard sell. I loathe when they ask what I use I'm happy with it thanks then tear it to shreds and insist I simply must buy the shitty, overpriced and odd smelling niche predict they're trying to push on me and are visibly annoyed when I demur. The men are worse for this for some reason. Look, I'm paying a pile for my hair to be done, that's it, if I wanted it, it's right there on display, I'd buy it. Also don't want the creepy head massage. Bizarre.

Anordinarymum · 02/12/2020 19:32

A 'once yearly colour'.. eh?? 5 hours.. eh?? Don't get any of it

MarshaBradyo · 02/12/2020 19:32

I don’t do much small talk, I take magazines instead

Flackattack · 02/12/2020 19:33

I never knew other people felt like this!!!
I’m not a weirdo!!! I’m desperate to get my roots done but hate going!!! Lockdown has once again messed up my appointment! I absolutely hate it to the point it stresses me out!!! But also hate roots.
Ridiculous really

NuniaBeeswax · 02/12/2020 19:34

Oh look, another sneery hairdressing thread. Why even bother getting it coloured if you're only going once a year? Just do what the rest of the MN Vidal Sassoons do and get out the kitchen scissors and a bottle of Clairol. Apparently they all look great.

AuntieMarys · 02/12/2020 19:35

I love my hairdresser. I go every 5 weeks and enjoy a good chat with her.

Sneery?

Bit sensitive. Most people go because they prefer the results. Doesn’t mean they feel ‘pampered’ or whatever.

nuitdesetoiles · 02/12/2020 19:36

I absolutely hate it. Sorry hairdressers but the majority of you just don't listen and I end up walking away looking like shit. My hair is really curly, most hairdressers don't know how to deal with it but lie and say they do.
I go to someone's house now twice a year. I've known her for years, because it's just me there whole cut, colour, blow dry takes max 2 hours. She's great with the colour but only average with the cut..

SebastianTheCrab · 02/12/2020 19:40

I'm not sure why some people are taking this personally? I don't enjoy the experience of going to the hairdresser in the same way I don't enjoy the experience of going for a smear test (although at least I get to lie down for that one) - I don't think nurses take it so personally you don't enjoy the experience?

It's not a personal slight against hairdressers. I think they do an important job! I know I can't do it myself which is why I put myself in their hands completely.

I take my book and kindle and once we’ve had the initial what I want conversation I just say ‘ I’m just going to read’.

GaraMedouar · 02/12/2020 19:40

I hate the hairdresser too (well not my hairdresser as she’s very nice just the whole going palaver) . If I do go rarely I wash my hair before I go, I can’t cope with someone else washing it for me- she cuts it, and then just dries the damp out of it roughly , so not a proper blow dry. As quick as poss in and out.

MadameButterface · 02/12/2020 19:40

Well, it’s not compulsory! I am a hairdresser and i’ve never asked anyone if they’re going on holiday/going out/looking forward to christmas etc etc. If you want to talk about something less banal, start the conversation! If you don’t want to talk, politely say so. I wouldn’t mind, neither would any other hairdresser. Talking to people is knackering. Can’t believe there are people on this thread who get pissed off at being asked what they’d like doing with their hair - we’re not fucking psychic. How much effort is it to say ‘just a trim’? Jesus 😂

grey12 · 02/12/2020 19:41

Anyone else hates the hair washing chair???? Confused

Yes the hard sell and the "what products do you use?" absolutely sets my teeth on edge. I know they're told to do it by the salon owner though, in the same way store assistants are told to sell overpriced credit cards by their managers :(

Haha, PREACH

Did you have a good first day back Nunia? I did. My clients are all dead nice tho Grin

NuniaBeeswax · 02/12/2020 19:44

"Sneery?

Not really. I didn't mention anything about "pampering" either. I don't particularly enjoy having my hair cut (because I'm a weirdo who doesn't like being touched), but I would never start a thread on here moaning about how long it takes, or that it's "never done right", or claiming I could do better myself, or that hairdressing isn't even that difficult, or that I'm appalled and outraged they'd have the audacity to speak to me, or whatever other shit people like to fling at hairdressers on here on a weekly basis. No one is forced to go and get their haircut.

Notonthestairs · 02/12/2020 19:44

I don't enjoy the process - especially wearing a mask. But my hairdresser is interesting and funny and makes me look a whole lot better - so it's worth the faff.
5 hours might try my patience though.

Snort.

Actually none of that is the issue. Still something to get through though. Especially the head massage.

I go to a central London one which is expensive (Aveda) and it’s all very nice but still something to get over and done with. Stylist is fine.

I'm only a hairdresser of a canine variety, so maybe that's why I feel a bit strongly about this thread, haha. I've had my fair share of "I cAn Do BeTtEr MySelF!!!2" customers who inevitably come crawling back begging us to fix whatever mess they've made of their poor dog.

Literally the only thing I complained about on that list is how long it took.

Is 5 hours a normal amount of time for a hair appointment? Genuinely asking! I don't think I would have been so irritated if they'd warned me how long it would take. (And if they had I would have asked if there were any other options).

The only one out of this is the touching thing. I’d do a reduced service if I could. But still good cut.
DominaShantotto · 02/12/2020 19:48

Love mine! I go every month to get my roots and colour touched up (it's very very bleached and then usually dyed a bright colour over the top) and it's my only real "me" time. I don't spend a lot on myself - but my monthly hairdresser trip is one I do (my hair grows stupid fast).

She is also fucking amazing at cutting - I get compliments all the time when she's done it.

Honeyroar · 02/12/2020 19:49

My hairdresser is lovely but I still don’t really enjoy going. I never have.

DappledThings · 02/12/2020 19:49

Hate it. And hate having to make actual appointments. One of my biggest irritants about lockdown and no longer working in London has been not being able to just pop into Mr Toppers whenever it was convenient for me.

Never had my hair coloured and never will. I'd never have the patience for it. Sounds awful.
