To hate going to the hairdressers?

I just hate it. I don't find it relaxing at all.

I hate being trapped in the chair for hours, having to make awkward small talk with the receptionists, assistant and hairdresser, staring at myself in the mirror, having to fob off the endless attempts to flog me products and expensive treatments, smiling and nodding at the end while they gush about how great my hair looks (are they complimenting me or themselves? I mean, I've just been sat on my arse scrolling Mumsnet for hours while they've done all the work?) and then fiddling about with tips for everyone at the end.

But today took the absolute biscuit. I went in for my once-yearly colour and ended up there for five hours. It killed my entire day. I had so many errands I was supposed to run today and had to bin my entire To Do list. I literally walked out in the middle of the blow dry so I could be on time to pick up my son from nursery.

I have no idea what they were doing for so long. They kept putting goop in my hair, washing a bit out, adding more goop, putting me under the heater thing, combing through, adding more goop etc etc. After 3 hours I asked how much longer it was going to take and my eyes nearly popped out of my head when they said 1.5 hours. It ended up taking a further 2.

And my hair looks almost exactly the same.

Dear hairdresser, this is massively obvious who I am if you read this - I'm sorry. I just hate going to the hairdressers!

I also dislike it so use a mobile hairdresser who comes to my home and I just colour it myself, which as I’m brunette is quite easy.

My hairdresser fronts up, cuts it, I wash it in advance, I pay her, she fucks off again and I dry it. Happy days.

MirandaMarple · 02/12/2020 18:24

I am growing increasingly bored of it.

It's a 'friend' who does it at her house. There's kids coming in and out, stuff going on as you would expect in a busy household. What should take two hours in a salon takes upto 3-4 hours. And it's an hour round drive too.

I've gone to her for years, she had a shop for a long time, that was better.

I can't go anywhere else, obviously, as along with the loyalty thing she puts a very strong bleach on my hair (I have a short pixie cut) that no one else would. My world ended (not really) when she went on maternity leave.

TheLadyOfShallnott · 02/12/2020 18:33

I hate going to the hairdresser. Heaps of disasters through the years and so I have left it to go grey.

I did have one 30 years ago. She was marvellous. But I got posted and when I came back, she’d moved away. Sad

I am probably one of the few who hasn’t had any type of lockdown haircut and I certainly didn’t rush for a haircut once they reopened.

I do, however, have to go as my hair hasn’t been cut since last autumn, parts of it are practically touching my hind and I look like a longer haired Madam Mim. face too

I wish I liked going but I’d rather have a filling.

Rafflesway · 02/12/2020 18:33

I agree wholeheartedly and find expensive salons the worst!

I now use a unisex hairdresser in our village who DH used before me.
She has a very small shop, no products on sale and she chats about her family and things happening locally.

I only have a dry cut every 6-8 weeks and then colour it myself. Suits me perfectly!

Lockheart · 02/12/2020 18:35

Well it's not obligatory, you don't have to go if you hate it that much.

If I had the money and the time I think I'd be in for a blow dry every other day!

Nanny0gg · 02/12/2020 18:37

You can discuss what you want, how much it will cost and how long it will take before you book.

Hairdressers seem to be the one group on here that it's ok to be really rude about.

No one makes you go. And as so many posters have found, it's not remotely skilled so it's easy to do your own. Hmm

I hate it.

I've been cutting/dying my own hair for about 10 years now!

VeganCow · 02/12/2020 18:42

I also hate it. Have it down to a fine art now- pay £5 for trainee at salon in town. They are a good salon so only use the girls who have pretty much qualified and don't need to be supervised. She washes and cuts and doesn't fart about with that stupid blow drying, she just blasts it with the hairdryer like I do at home. All done in an hour

Frieswithanythin · 02/12/2020 18:43

I hate it too. I try and go when it’s busy so I can people watch. Hate small talk as I’m not a chatty person.

Apileofballyhoo · 02/12/2020 18:45

Hate everything about it. I've been 8 times in my life. Random people touching your head, in your personal space, talking shite, and never suggesting anything useful for my hair, or cutting it in a way I want. I've cut it myself for years and it's no better or worse. Probably better.

Callipygion · 02/12/2020 18:53

That was, I think, the only highlight (no pun intended) of lockdown for me, not going to a hairdresser. I hate it with a passion, all the small talk, looking at my ugly mug in the mirror, torture! I’ve been trimming my hair myself during lockdowns, and my daughter said it doesn’t look any different to when the hairdresser did it, so I think I’ll carry on!

stressfullday · 02/12/2020 18:59

I love getting my hair done. My hairdresser doesn't mind that I can never remember her name and that I hate small talk Grin

FlyNow · 02/12/2020 19:03

Yep, absolutely hate it so I don't go. I dye it myself and get my sister or DH to trim it. It looks pretty average, but on the rare occasions I've been to a hairdresser it still looks average and I'm out many £ and hours of time.

MrsRogerLima · 02/12/2020 19:03

@OrigamiOwl

I hate going to the hairdresser's too. In my case it's probably because my mum used to cut my hair off if I'd been naughty as a child, so I still see it as a punishment. But anyway... Yes, it's a chore... Making small talk, having to wear a gown that appears to be trying to strangle me, none of it is pleasant.
She did what! 😡
MercyBooth · 02/12/2020 19:04

I love my hairdresser. Its UK Power Networks that are the problem. Cant seem to cope when there is a gust of wind.

NorbertMeubles · 02/12/2020 19:06

I cut my own hair. Grown it out from a pixie to a blunt bob this year and haven't once been in a hairdressers.

riotlady · 02/12/2020 19:09

YANBU, I hate it! I hate making small talk, I hate looking at myself in the mirror, I feel bad for how long my hair takes because it’s so thick and long. I found a hairdresser who doesn’t try and chat to me and is actually quick- less than 45 mins for a cut and blow dry which is miraculous for my hair. I drive out of my way to go there and always give a big tip, she makes the whole experience tolerable!

Justjoshin22 · 02/12/2020 19:09

God I love it. Love having no kids to entertain, love the trashy mags, love the head massage, love coming out looking better than I can do my hair myself. God, makes me want to book my next appointment right now 😂

stairway · 02/12/2020 19:12

I never go the hairdresser, dye my own hair and trim it myself. so much happier this way.

Nomoreboobs · 02/12/2020 19:17

I so hate it too! I hate small talk and the awkwardness of my face in the mirror looking less than attractive 😂
I’ve not been for a while due to all the restrictions etc before, but I tend to call and ask for a ‘Quick’ wash and cut. As much as I love the look of having a proper blow dry etc, it takes hours as my hair is fairly long. Now I generally say just to do a quick rough dry as I’m going swimming afterwards 🤷🏻‍♀️😂the less time I’m there, the better.

user1493494961 · 02/12/2020 19:19

I hate it, I haven't been since March, I've been cutting my own hair and dread to think what it looks like from the back.

SunsetBeetch · 02/12/2020 19:22

I hate it too. Small talk and facing a mirror. Two of my least favourite things!

NeonIcedcoffee · 02/12/2020 19:27

If you're going to go for your colour done the you're unreasonable to moan at how long it takes. It take a long time. If you don't wnat to spend that time then don't get it done.

Ajile · 02/12/2020 19:27

I hate that it takes so long. I don't want the upsell of hair products. My last hairdresser put their prices up all the time. In the end they were charging as much as top salons in town.

In lockdown I decided to grow my hair longer (was a shoulder length bob) and stop dying to cover the grey. Now I cut my own fringe (easy enough) and have about 4-5 inches of salt and pepper 'highlights'. Actually, the grow out has given me an ombre look. And the extra length is flattering.

Apart from a yearly trim at some point in the future, I don't see myself going back. And it's saved me £££.
