AIBU to think you can't name 5 foreign films

I have moved to the UK from another country and I have noticed that on TV they only show American and English films/shows. In my country (ex ussr) foreign films/ TV series are quite popular and often shown at prime time but seems its not the case in the UK with few exceptions like bbc4. Am I wrong? Do people watch Indian, Brazilian,
Corean films? Please vote.
AIBU- I (and most of my friends/family) can name 5 foreign films produced in 5 different countries. If so, which films are these?
YANBU - I can't name 5 foreign films.

I'll start:
Fantomas -France
Seeta and Geeta - India
Wild rose - Mexico
The taming of the scoundrel- Italy
Mole cartoon - Czech

Come as you are ~ Belgian
Eat drink man woman ~ Chinese
Shoplifters ~ Japanese
The lives of others ~ German
Babette's Feast ~ Danish
That's without all the French, Italian, Russian and Swedish classics that are part of European culture.

So I'd say that you were being unreasonable OP!

PirateCatQueen · 02/12/2020 20:29

Nights in the Forest
Delicatessen
Pan’s Labyrinth
The Cup
Amores Perres

DougRossIsTheBoss · 02/12/2020 20:37

I am very poncey and genuinely like Ingmar Bergman films. The first time I saw the seventh seal I was just blown away with its atmosphere. Also love Fanny and Alexander

I also love Spanish films especially Amores Perros, Et Tu Mama Tambien and La Ardilla Roja (Red Squirrel). Saw that at uni and still remember it.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 02/12/2020 20:39

Yes my DH is a big fan of Bergman film. I have to be in the right mood as I find them so dark.

Yellownotblue · 02/12/2020 20:51

In addition to the one I said earlier (4 months, 3 weeks, 2days - Romanian)

  • 2 more that are really disturbing are 'martrys' which is French and 'the skin I live in' which is Spanish. Horrifying but brilliant!
HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 02/12/2020 21:13

I liked Issi & Ossi.

We have watched a few Bollywood films as well although it’s not really our thing so we don’t watch many. We and my daughters watched Singh is King a few years ago at Christmas and had a great time.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 02/12/2020 21:18

Oops Isi.

And I just remembered, when I was young (maybe 9 or 10) I absolutely loved the Austrian film Sissi, about the Empress of Austria. I couldn’t understand a word but I could read the subtitles and that was good enough for me. So it obviously started early for me.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 02/12/2020 21:26

I watch martial arts films so there's an awful lot. Also Studio Ghibli films. I think most of us will have seen quite a few. But, so what?? Are you proclaiming the watching foreign films as a virtue?? Why?

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 02/12/2020 21:38

I was curious if there are any foreign movies which became a wide-known cultural reference in the UK I'm curious about why. The UK is a place with a lot of subcultures and interests. Among different interest group areas there will be well-known references. From martial arts films many people will recognise Jackie Chan's name: not long ago he was pretty mainstream. Some will recognise Jet Li's. Are they what you're looking for?

So 75% in favour of YABU - fair enough, you proved me wrong:) thanks for your replies - I will now try and take a note of the most popular entries. I have to say the results are quite different from what I have imagined before, e.g. never heard of Das boot or Babette's feast which were mentioned few times, on the other hand no-one remembered Taxi which for me is one of the most popular French films

I’ve recently just finished vampires, French and love and Anarchy, Swedish hoping for another series for both.

Are you for real, OP? You post about how little British people know about foreign films, but you’ve never heard of the modern classic Das Boot, or Babette’s Feast, which won the Oscar for best foreign language film?
Catdogmum · 02/12/2020 21:50

Goodbye Lenin, La Lengua de la Mariposa, Todo Sobre Mi Madre, Los Ojos de Julia, Se Quien Eres, Volver...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/12/2020 21:53

Op, one thing you take note of is that you simply cannot ask any questions such as this without some Brits reading it differently, taking it personally thinking you are calling them all dumb🤷🏻
We are not allowed to wonder about things like this. 😁 Or do it very quietly. And never mention washing machine😂

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 02/12/2020 21:55

I didn’t vote...

That’s not a Brits thing, really. That’s human nature, I’d venture, and happens just as often across all nationalities, cultures and ethnicities.

I’m not British at all, it’s just that people who’ve lived under a rock for 20 years could probably name five foreign films.
