AIBU to think you can't name 5 foreign films

I have moved to the UK from another country and I have noticed that on TV they only show American and English films/shows. In my country (ex ussr) foreign films/ TV series are quite popular and often shown at prime time but seems its not the case in the UK with few exceptions like bbc4. Am I wrong? Do people watch Indian, Brazilian,
Corean films? Please vote.
AIBU- I (and most of my friends/family) can name 5 foreign films produced in 5 different countries. If so, which films are these?
YANBU - I can't name 5 foreign films.

I'll start:
Fantomas -France
Seeta and Geeta - India
Wild rose - Mexico
The taming of the scoundrel- Italy
Mole cartoon - Czech
@AccidentallyOnPurpose not to me. I usually watched these when with my grandma (except Wild angel and Esmeralda) so she might have known them.
Looks like we are similar age😂
I watched them with my mum. Great incentive to learn to read, and read fast as she couldn't be bothered to read the subtitles to me. She said it made the story hard to follow. Grin

Dallas was family time.

The young and the restless is probably older than I am.😂😂😂😂

Livpool · 02/12/2020 19:22

Das Boot
La vie en rose
Parasite
Lola rennt
Martyrs
Old Boy

Not sure what that shows though - maybe I don't mind subtitles?!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/12/2020 19:23

Oh yeah. Dallas. And Dynasty. They just don't make them how they used to😂
I also keep remembering the name Angelica (I think?). And a blond elegant woman on a horse. Big hair. But that's it. A single flashback from some series.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 02/12/2020 19:25

I loved Dallas & Dynasty as a child...but I had a soft spot for Dallas.

For me it was the thing with the cowboy hats and stuff and these American grand mansions. It looked so cool to me.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/12/2020 19:30

Apologies for the derail🙈

ZenNudist · 02/12/2020 19:31

I have scrolled through without looking and not googled to test myself:
l'appartement
Les vies des autres
Run Lola run
Ringu
Jamon jamon
Three colours red white and blue
Pan's labyrinth
Amelie

I think my foreign film watching goes back to my 20s!

ZenNudist · 02/12/2020 19:34

Oh now there's loads on here I have heard of!

HeronLanyon · 02/12/2020 19:36

Place Vendôme.
Amarcord
La Belle et les Bette
The power and the glory -almodavar. Forgot the Spanish title. Wonderful wonderful film.
Écoute voir
Wasn’t very easy granted.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 02/12/2020 19:37

Run Lola Run was good. I’d forgotten that it was in German!

Amelie was a favourite as whimsical films go.

I watch them all with subtitles , can’t stand dubbed films.

@SchrodingersImmigrant same for me! And I also liked the intro/theme music better.

keeprocking · 02/12/2020 19:38

From a long time ago Les Parapluies de Cherbourg.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 02/12/2020 19:40

Also watched The Monk recently (French).

Two Mongolian films, one of which was very good but i can’t remember the title just now. The other was also quite good.

A couple of Japanese films, one a 60s film and the other one more recent; again, I can’t remember titles. I’ll look them up later in case anyone’s interested.

Theghostofchristmasarse · 02/12/2020 19:43

La Haine, french, used to love this, and the big blue.
Underground, Czech (amazing film, really bloody long, need to watch it again but never managed to find it after seeing it in Poland about 20 years ago)
Delicatessen, french, love their stuff... City of lost children too I think?
My cousin toturo
Spirited away
Crouching tiger
The ring, the proper one..

God, loads! Need to watch more... Used to get properly into foreign cinema. Problem is, you have to properly concentrate and my eyesight is shite these days so no good for subtitles 😂

TillyFloss10 · 02/12/2020 19:48

I'm not sure how many I could name but one film stays with me.
Its name in English is '4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days', it is a Romanian film. I watched it years ago when it was on channel 5 really late at night and it's a film that has really stayed with me, I think about it often. I would recommend people see it. (TW though- contains pregnancy, abortion and sexual assault)

subjecttoavailability · 02/12/2020 19:50

AccidentallyOnPurpose, SchrodingersImmigrant - great examples:)

Definitely watched that.Grin

YANBU. I couldn't name one going by your criteria. I don't understand why American, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand made films are not considered to be foreign films. Are you just referring to films in a foreign language then? If so, I couldn't name any. I've never watched any as I can't stand subtitles and don't speak any foreign languages.

Brefugee · 02/12/2020 19:53

Eh? Does it make people better if they don't only watch shitty hallmark Christmas films?

As it happens i can name lots of foreign films. It only means i watch a lot of films, nothing more.

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 02/12/2020 20:01

@Ebearhug I had a total Almovodar obsession when I was a student as well, saw all of his films over and over!

I agree, you're talking about demographics. I personally love a foreign film, it's personal choice isn't it? I for example hate all rom coms and slapstick american comedies and probably couldn't name 5 in either category. But there's not point in denying that the film industry globally is heavily skewed in favour of English (not UK because I think Scottish, Welsh and NI films don't get the same level of investment or marketing) and American filmmakers and their projects and funding. I was so chuffed when Parasite won best oscar

First five from different countries that I adore and can think off the top of my head:
Delicatessen - French
Roma - Mexican
LA Grande Belleza - Italian
The Woman in the Dunes - Chinese
Stalker - Russian

and also agreeing with @BobbyGentry the vast majority of Studio Ghibli films (though not Pom-Poko too many dangly raccoon testicles for me!)

YANBU
