to be surprised that anyone watches terrestrial TV anymore?

If I'm watching TV, I go straight to Netflix, as there doesn't seem to be much on terrestrial that isn't a) stupid or b) depressing. Is it just me that does this?

@Lockheart

And yes, there is a LOT of shite on Netflix et al. too, but the key difference is I can ignore the shite and don't have to wait for it to finish before I can watch something good.

The problem with terrestrial is you have to watch this thing at this time and if we've put the film you want to watch on at midnight so it doesn't finish until 2.30 in the morning (once you've accounted for adverts) then that's tough.

Or I could just watch the film at a convenient time with no adverts on a streaming service.

I just Sky+ it, all my terrestrial programmes come through Sky

I don't think it's nosey keeprocking but I do think think anyone who is satisfied by Netflix for all their viewing needs is probably a light viewer of TV or pretty shallow.

Shallow? How so? That’s a new one! Grin

And what’s wrong with being a light viewer of TV?

PuppyMonkey · 04/12/2020 16:54

My tv licence is up for renewal at the end of the month and I’m really wondering whether to bother. If I think about it, this year I have watched Normal People, I May Destroy You, His Dark Materials and most of Strictly on BBC. That’s it.

I get a bit confused about whether you need a licence to watch the other live terrestrial channels.

I gave up Coronation Street as it got so shit. But occasionally tune in still to see if they’re going to conclude the Geoff/Yasmeen story.

And I like to watch Frasier on Channel 4 in the mornings.

Other than that I’m usually watching Netflix, Prime or Now.Confused

I agree with those talking about the old days of knowing you were watching something with the entire nation at the same time. Who shot JR. Top of the Pops. The Young Ones. Blackadder. Val Doonican on Christmas Eve (okay maybe that was just my house Grin)

Happy, cosy memories.

@keeprocking

I'm amazed that anyone is so nosey as to wonder why other people do an irrelevsant thing like watching terrestial TV. It never amazes me, the inconsequential rubbish thst seems to bother people, get a life and live it!
I think that about all the threads where the OP says they are curious about some banal aspect of other people's lives, but maybe they are bored stiff because they don't have TV Grin

Iacgmooh is sooo dull. First time I have watched it.

bumblingbovine49 · 04/12/2020 17:54

@JovialNickname

I don't have the Internet at home (apart from a little bit of phone data to tiddle around on text based sites like mumsnet). I still have to be home at a certain time to catch episodes of things which amuses my friends a lot Smile

Netflix and Prime, probably 70:30 split.
I just like to sit down when I'm ready and pick up where I left off. I know you can do that with iplayer etc but there's enough to interest me on the other platforms.

Fleetwoodmacs · 04/12/2020 18:03

I do a mix. I like terrestrial TV on as a background during the day while I'm doing housework and stuff, then pointless on with dinner.

Once the kids are in bed it's definitely over to the streaming channels though.

That's so rude. TV can be for escapism as well.
trixiebelden77 · 05/12/2020 07:06

I deliberately went back to TV.

I noticed my attention span was reduced and one of the culprits I think was being able to watch every episode of something whenever I wanted. It has slowed me down to watch something weekly and look forward to it.

AlizarinRed · 06/12/2020 05:29

Yes being able to watch every episode in a series ruined things for me - most series seem to be thriller/ murder so it's hard not to.
I don't have tv on during the day so enjoy bland Flog It or Pointless whilst reading or whatever, it's relaxing.
