If I'm watching TV, I go straight to Netflix, as there doesn't seem to be much on terrestrial that isn't a) stupid or b) depressing. Is it just me that does this?

I miss the days of the whole country talking about the previous night's TV

Me also. It used to be fun going to work or meeting up with friends and discussing the latest episode of the current hit drama - now I seem to be the only person watching most of them Sad

waltzingparrot · 02/12/2020 07:30

Countryfile
Blue Planet
Gardeners World

Neither stupid or depressing

@staydazzling

good grief theres some bitches on here, shes only asked a question! i hardly watch live tv now only odd times, mainly netflix, im. surprised they aren't trying harder to produce better content.
She's not though. She's clearly angling to be told how much more discerning she is than everyone else.

The BBC licence fee does seem expensive in the context of Netflix, Now TV etc, but we pay it because we'd miss it if we didn't have it (David Attenborough, the News, Pointless - another one with a post work tea and Pointless ritual that this year has all to often been interupted by the Downing Street podiums)

BarbaraofSeville · 02/12/2020 07:42

Channel 5 has some surprisingly good content too and I do watch just about all of that on catch up, eg Susan Calman's Secret Scotland series or some bloke doing something about bridges, I watched a fascinating programme about the construction and history of Tower Bridge, not so long ago.

DriveThroughSwabber · 02/12/2020 07:43

Yabu, I'm broke, I can't afford Netflix/sky/whatever. Terrestrial tv is my only option

daisypond · 02/12/2020 07:47

I only watch terrestrial TV. We don’t have Netflix or Amazon or Sky etc. We watch on catch-up often, so we are not tied down to the TV schedules. There’s plenty on all channels.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/12/2020 07:47

You're not surprised at all really though are you?
You know fine well people watch terrestrial TV and you're just being judgy.Hmm

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 02/12/2020 07:49

I like terrestrial for background TV, news in the morning, Pointless and House of Games in the evening mostly. Netflix is more sit down and watch properly.

WitchesSpelleas · 02/12/2020 07:49

I only watch terrestrial - I don't have Netflix or any similar services. I can watch i-player etc. on my laptop but I don't really like squinting at a tiny screen so hardly ever bother.

I'm more a radio person than a TV person anyway - I watch probably 2 or 3 programmes a week on average and I don't leave the TV on in the background, I'll put the radio on instead.

WitsEnding · 02/12/2020 07:50

I only have terrestrial TV, I watch the news occasionally (prefer radio) and some BBC4 and drama on iplayer.

If the TV broke I’m not sure I’d bother to get another one.

WitchesSpelleas · 02/12/2020 07:52

Susan Calman's Secret Scotland Yes - we watched that and really enjoyed it. There are good programmes on terrestrial tv if you look for them.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 02/12/2020 07:53

I really wish we watched terrestrial, I definitely think I am missing loads of things because I don’t even see ads for what’s coming. I’m not a big TV person but between gaming kids and DH who instantly reaches for Netflix etc I have to be really aware.

I do, as a PP above, make time for Pointless and contemplate my love affairs with Xander and Richard whilst laughing and shouting at the TV.

LawnFever · 02/12/2020 07:53

Mixture of both, and tbh quite a lot of content on Netflix is made by other broadcasters, their model wouldn’t work without buying/co producing content made by BBC/Channel 4 and those channels make money selling their dramas to Netflix

I don’t watch a lot of live tv, I record what I want but that’s the beauty of media now, the choice available

KatherineJaneway · 02/12/2020 07:54

Me too. It is always Prime or Netflix and only turn on live TV for a major event or a show I love like Masterchef.

FamilyOfAliens · 02/12/2020 07:54

You and me both.

BBC 6 Music in particular. Couldn’t live without it!

Iwantacookie · 02/12/2020 07:54

Tbf bbc1 tends to be left on in the day while I'm pottering then after tea its netflix or catch up

IamMaz · 02/12/2020 07:54

@ amicissimma

I went to a live recording of Pointless and was very disillusioned. Both Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman totally ignored the studio audience - which wasn't huge! Didn't even give us a glance or a wave. Nothing. Alexander was on his phone during any gap in filming and Richard on his computer.

However, at a recording of The Chase, Bradley Walsh was great! Actually came into the audience and chatted. There's no audience at The Chase unless it's a celebrity version.

BefuddledPerson · 02/12/2020 08:00

We watch normal digital TV, I CBA with subscriptions as we don't watch enough to make them worth bothering with. There's enough stuff on iPlayer to plug any gaps.

I probably would enjoy things on Netflix etc but it is hard to get very bothered about this TV programme over that TV programme, they are just for filling time!

BefuddledPerson · 02/12/2020 08:00

I don't agree about BBC being boring/depressing, btw.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 02/12/2020 08:01

I don't watch much TV but I do watch terrestrial channels and things on sky crime or whatever. I cba with Netflix - every time we've tried to watch something on there we've given up searching because it's all shite. The thing about the plague the other week with Dr. Xand was good. My dc & I were really interested in it.

MrsHarryKane · 02/12/2020 08:04

I didn’t watch terrestrial TV for about 6 years as I had Netflix and Amazon Prime. But I missed it and I’m finding the content on Terrestrial tv better than those online.

And actually- a lot of the stuff on Netflix originated from BBC and ITV.

I’m enjoying watching the first Christmas adverts I’ve seen for years Grin

nosswith · 02/12/2020 08:06

There are some interesting and well made programmes on terrestrial tv, even though it may be fewer than say ten or twenty years ago. Others have mentioned examples. Granted there are the uninteresting and then some that are disgraceful (Naked Attraction, Mrs Brown's Boys), but that should not mean no terrestrial tv at all.

SeaKingdom · 02/12/2020 08:07

I don’t even have Netflix. We have Disney Plus which I got for Hamilton but have kept for the kids.
Over the last few weeks I have watched, either “live”, nearly live on catch up, or on demand: I’m a Celeb, Bake-off, Battlestar Galactica on iPlayer, Only Connect, Taskmaster, Pointless, Roadkill, Nigella, Jamie Oliver, various Scandi detective series on iPlayer and All 4 (eg Twins, DNA), Top of the Pops, Dr Who, His Dark Materials. There are shows on other platforms I would like to watch but there is so much on terrestrial I don’t even have time to watch what’s there - I have a whole series of Star Trek Discovery that I haven’t seen yet. Also the shows I want to see that are not on terrestrial are scattered across Prime, Netflix and others, and I refuse to subscribe to three or more platforms. Had Prime for a while because of Good Omens but it was rubbish, practically everything cost additional money and series I was watching for “free” as part of the subscription would suddenly become pay-for. And Good Omens was on BBC very shortly after anyway! Anything I want to watch that is not on terrestrial and doesn’t seem likely to, I watch on DVD. I’ve got Chernobyl out of the library at the moment.

AliasGrape · 02/12/2020 08:14

DH loves Pointless, Mastermind, University Challenge so we watch those. I like House of Games too and enjoy the fact that I roundly trounce DH at every episode because his brain doesn’t seem to work that way.

We both enjoy Strictly and Bake Off although less so every year it seems. I was also excited to see that The Great British Menu was back.

The Repair Shop is excellent, soothing viewing.

I really enjoyed Des on ITV recently (although that probably comes under the category of depressing).

Surprised myself by enjoying Ghosts on BBC - though did watch that on iplayer. Nice gentle viewing through night feeds.

Endeavour on ITV one of my favourites.

Blue Planet/ Planet Earth

Also the absolute joy that is Taskmaster is back on channel 4, I’m sure there’s a case for putting that in the ‘stupid’ category but I think it’s a delight.

Working around the baby means we do have to use the catch up services more but I enjoy having the option of just whatever is on ‘live’ - sometimes on mat leave I just want a bit of background noise and other times we end up watching something I’d never have actively sought out on Netflix/ Prime/ Now but which turns out to be really good. And sometimes I don’t have the energy/ brain power to scroll through all 3 streaming services and try to decide what I want to watch (which can sometimes take up most of the 45 mins- an hour I have before I have free to watch tv without me actually settling on anything) so I’m just happy to take whatever I can find on the basic 5 channels and zone out for a bit.

Netflix has more than its share of both stupid and depressing too for what it’s worth.
