If I'm watching TV, I go straight to Netflix, as there doesn't seem to be much on terrestrial that isn't a) stupid or b) depressing. Is it just me that does this?

OP posts:
luckylavender · 02/12/2020 08:20

Aren't you the cultural judge OP? Stop being so condescending. We all have different tastes. I watch a variety of streamed & terrestrial. I certainly wouldn't like just Netflix.

Danglingmod · 02/12/2020 08:23

Not so much condescending as wrong?

Most of the best stuff on subscription services was originally BBC, Sky Atlantic or HBO originally anyway. A lot of the Netflix original stuff is the actual dross.

But obviously, this is just a windup. The whole of BBC4, BBC2 and Channel 4 content is "stupid"?

longwayoff · 02/12/2020 08:24

Just been given Britbox subscription for Christmas. Binged 4 series of At Home with the Braithwaites - Sally Wainwright. About to start Clocking Off - Debbie Horsfield. Will probably spend next few weeks in Midsomer and Oxford with the Inspectors. Apparently, 6 months free if you have BT broadband. That would be a bargain.

RedskyAtnight · 02/12/2020 08:26

I don't watch much tv so want quick and easy fixes. I find trawling through masses of stuff on Netflix or Prime to be time consuming and overwhelming.

I like watching the news, quiz programmes and documentaries on tv, especially if they are available on catchup (not the news) and I can watch them when I want. Terrestrial tv suits me much better. Especially since I've set up "favourites" on my TV so I only have to look at about 6 channels. Netflix/Prime seem to be aimed at people who want to sit and mindlessly binge watch series (which is what my DH and children do with them, and I suspect the OP). Not everyone watches TV in the same way. Same way as not everyone has the same tastes in music or reads the same books.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 02/12/2020 08:50

I don't really like most of the things on Netflix, DH does. I find a lot of it is style over substance and designed to be mindlessly binge watched and the rest was on TV originally anyway.

AlizarinRed · 02/12/2020 08:54

I watched The Undoing last night (might have been on catch up) v good. Not Netflix.
I don't always want to watch a drama series. And many are too violent for me.

PTW1234 · 02/12/2020 08:54

I haven’t watch normal TV in years.. literally have not watched a single thing since I lived in this house (4 years now!). We have a smart tv and cancelled our tv package a couple of years ago. It’s cheeper to pay for Netflix, prime and nowtv than it is sky or virgin.

And back when I did watch tv it was just shows I recorded anyway, so no different to on demand services

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2020 08:55

I must be old fashioned. I only watch tv if there's something on I want to see. So I switch the telly on on a Saturday night specifically to watch SCD.

I never go looking for something to watch. Maybe on a couple of occasions during lockdown I looked at BBC Iplayer to find something out of boredom. Found Normal People and Love Life. Both a good watch.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 02/12/2020 08:56

@MaMaLa321

perfectly serious. Most of the BBC's output is, as I've said, either stupid or really depressing. IMO, anyway.
I'm sure you're not the only one who thinks watching Netflix is superior. 🙄

Still, I'm sure you can't help being a technically challenged fool who can't use the search/wish list/record functions.

Netflix is no better than terrestrial & has its fair share of utter dross.

FuzzyPuffling · 02/12/2020 08:56

I only watch terrestrial TV and don't subscribe to any other paid TV. Do I think I'm stupid or missing out? Nope!
And there's a couple of new Great British Sewing Bees on at Christmas. Now there's a programme I like!

Aragog · 02/12/2020 08:56

I rarely watch Netflix. I watch tv mainly via sky.

We do have Netflix, Disney +, Apple TV, a fire stick for various catch up stations and currently have Amazon prime for a bit. Not sure what else. Dh watches a lot of tv via these often on his iPad. 18y Dd does a lot too - again via her iPad or her Mac whilst she's away at university.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/12/2020 09:01

Netflix is chirning out stuff so fast it's actually becoming visible on the quality. If they keep going like this, they eill end up losing subscribers.

I watch freeview when there is something interesting. Some nice series there as pps above pointed out.

DarkMintChocolate · 02/12/2020 09:04

We only have Freeview. We mainly watch the BBC. Tbh, we spend more time playing on our IPads than watching TV.

satnighttakeaway · 02/12/2020 09:08

Was everything you've watched made by netflix/amazon i.e. original streaming content?

I can't imagine finding enough of that for 4 years of watching.

PTW1234 · 02/12/2020 09:20

No lots of the content is from other channels neatly in one app..

The combined cost of prime, nowtv (without movies) and Netflix is cheeper than an equivalent tv package. I don’t really mind if something has been on TV before and now on Netflix or prime etc. As even before when these apps where not very popular I mainly recorded tv and watched it in my own time or on demand

movingonup20 · 02/12/2020 09:21

I mostly watch terrestrial tv, we don't pay for Netflix etc, there's plenty on freeview tv. Occasionally we watch on catch up

NoraNorth · 02/12/2020 09:25

No Netflix or Prime here. Have just cancelled NowTV Entertainment in hope of a better deal, I didn't watch it anyway but DH does. So in a couple of weeks will be Freeview and the free NowTV only here. No intention of paying loads of monthly fees for TV, personally think we get reasonable value from TV licence for TV and radio.

oblada · 02/12/2020 09:26

BBC is pretty good. We watch a few dramas on there. Loads of foreign drama/series on BBC 4 iPlayer - Scandinavian, French etc. Occasionally will watch ITV or channel 5. If I'm at home during the day and sick/very bored then surely channel 4 comedies are a safe bet!! Ive never had Netflix, no need for it. We have prime and disney+ for movies with the kids.

Simplyunacceptable · 02/12/2020 09:27

My DGM only watches the BBC and occasionally C4. She won’t touch ITV unless a Poirot or Miss Marple re-run is on, she thinks it’s a terribly undignified channel Grin.

I don’t really watch TV tbh. I’m going to sound like a dinosaur but I prefer radio 4. I watch the odd Netflix thing, just finished The Queens Gambit for example.

PattyPan · 02/12/2020 09:31

@DriveThroughSwabber

Yabu, I'm broke, I can't afford Netflix/sky/whatever. Terrestrial tv is my only option
Netflix is half the price of a tv licence (I assume since you’re on MN you already have the internet)
contrmary · 02/12/2020 09:34

Other than news and live sport there is little point in watching live TV, terrestrial or otherwise. I used to have Virgin so got used to recording stuff on Tivo then watching back whenever, skipping through the adverts. I ditched them (because they're a bunch of cunts) and these days I hardly watch TV at all because I find the adverts so intrusive.

AgeLikeWine · 02/12/2020 09:36

I don’t have Netflix but I do subscribe to Sky. I watch a lot of news, current affairs & live sport.

LightasaBreeze · 02/12/2020 09:40

I probably watch a bit of everything, terrestrial, Netflix, Prime, Apple TV, BritBox, Sky and all the catch up things like iplayer and All4. I'm glad to have a large choice nowadays of all sources of TV. I get BritBox and AppleTv free at the moment though until February and April.

satnighttakeaway · 02/12/2020 09:45

Unless I'm misunderstanding the OP she's not saying that it's the method of delivery that's the problem it's the content.

I think you're missing her point If you watch say Top Gear on Netflix you're watching a made for terrestrial programme.

CounsellorTroi · 02/12/2020 09:46

We’ve got Netflix and Prime and also use IPlayer. We watch Strictly, rugby/football, Richard Osman’s House of Games and the occasional drama live. But it is great to be able to pause live TV while you go to the loo or check on the progress of your evening meal.
