to be surprised that anyone watches terrestrial TV anymore?

If I'm watching TV, I go straight to Netflix, as there doesn't seem to be much on terrestrial that isn't a) stupid or b) depressing. Is it just me that does this?

OP posts:
IToldYouIWasFreaky · 01/12/2020 22:21

*His Dark Materials and Small Axe both fantastic and on the BBC currently.

I like Netflix, but there is absolute pap on there too and I can't always find something to watch. The future is definitely on demand, but not all from one provider. Lots of services is the way to go.*

Totally agree on both points. Sunday nights are fab at the moment, thanks to the BBC.

I love Netflix box sets but there's quality programming from other providers too. Also, I like watching things like Masterchef or Bake Off when I don't fancy a drama, and it's quite fun to follow something week by week rather than bingeing it all in one go.

thedevilinablackdress · 01/12/2020 22:23

I only watch terrestrial. There's plenty on there for me without paying for more. You reckon everything is stupid or depressing?? Really?

A few of the BBC things I've enjoyed relatively recently: Fleabag, Roadkill, Landward, Doctor Who, Cuckoos Calling, His Dark Materials, The Other One, Dracula, Motherland

OllyBJolly · 01/12/2020 22:28

Nah. I’m almost solely terrestrial. Don’t watch much TV but if I do I time it for programmes I want to watch. BBC drama is superb. Can’t wait for next Line of Duty. We only have Sky in the bedroom ( personally hate TV in bedroom but DH got me in a weak moment). Only on during NFL /F1 season for him or VEEP for me when it was on. On rare Saturday lie ins we watch James Martin.

I miss the days of the whole country talking about the previous night's TV. Me too @StCharlotte It brought a real “connectedness” that’s missing these days. Happy to pay a TV licence for quality of drama.

StoneofDestiny · 01/12/2020 22:29

80% terrestrial 20% i player.
Don't have Netflix, Sky or Amazon Prime etc

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 01/12/2020 22:30

We don't even have terrestrial TV, no one used it. Netflix, Prime, Nowtv, YouTube. I don't watch much TV but every now and then I get really into a box set and binge it.

Mamamia456 · 01/12/2020 22:34

I always look to see what's on BBC1 and ITV first but then I'm old enough to remember when programmes used to finish at midnight and the BBC announcer would wish us goodnight and remind us to turn our TV sets off, before the national anthem was played. Just in case you did forget to switch it off a horrible high pitched noise would sound until programmes resumed the next day.

alibongo5 · 01/12/2020 22:38

@amicissimma

5.15. Cup of tea. Biscuit. Pointless.

I don't want to mess about with iPlayer. I want to 'have to' stop what I'm doing, sit back and be twinkled at by Alexander Armstrong on the dot of 5.15.

Absolutely! If I leave work on time, I am home just in time for it starting and it's a real chance to distance between work and home and unwind.
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/12/2020 22:45

IMO there's not been anything good on Telly since the Coronation, and that was in Black and White and only had 405 lines - but we was happy. Smile

Honeyroar · 01/12/2020 22:48

I only watch terrestrial tv. We have Now tv but rarely remember to watch it.

megletthesecond · 01/12/2020 22:49

We watch mostly BBC. BBC2 and the news to be precise. And the dc's still watch CBBC.

Netflix and iPlayer are for weekends.

FestiveFruitloop · 01/12/2020 22:51

There's loads of good programmes on terrestrial, OP!

Cygne · 01/12/2020 23:02

Given that viewing figures for BBC1 alone are over 120 million a week, I'm really surprised that you're surprised. I've got news for you, the entire country does not have to share your opinion.

Cygne · 01/12/2020 23:03

As you don't watch BBC, how do you claim to know what most of its output is like?

Namechange2020lalala · 01/12/2020 23:05

I love having the choice of both live and streamed tv. Live is good for channel hopping and is basically curated content. Streaming is obviously convenient but can feel a bit sterile.

PattyPan · 01/12/2020 23:09

Agreed. We got rid of our tv licence last year because there wasn’t anything worth watching. Don’t feel like we have missed out at all and actually all the programmes people seem to be talking about are Netflix ones rather than tv. We do have Netflix but don’t watch much stuff on that either.

toconclude · 01/12/2020 23:09

@MaMaLa321

perfectly serious. Most of the BBC's output is, as I've said, either stupid or really depressing. IMO, anyway.
BBC 4. Neither.
SwedishEdith · 01/12/2020 23:12

What do people find to watch on Netflix though? Whenever we've looked, there just seems to be a load of shite on there.

I'm glad Freeview now has Sky Arts - lots of good stuff on there but wouldn't pay for Sky.

JovialNickname · 01/12/2020 23:13

I don't have the Internet at home (apart from a little bit of phone data to tiddle around on text based sites like mumsnet). I still have to be home at a certain time to catch episodes of things which amuses my friends a lot Smile

BackforGood · 01/12/2020 23:19

Given that viewing figures for BBC1 alone are over 120 million a week, I'm really surprised that you're surprised.

This ^

I can't believe anyone is so ignorant of how people other than themselves lead their lives, that they don't realise some homes don't have broadband.

I don't watch either, but I know that audiences for things like Strictly and Bake off reach well into their millions.
Just the viewing figures for the BBC News alone are massive.

Do you really live under a rock ?

staydazzling · 01/12/2020 23:40

good grief theres some bitches on here, shes only asked a question!
i hardly watch live tv now only odd times, mainly netflix, im. surprised they aren't trying harder to produce better content.

IAmADNAMA · 01/12/2020 23:51

We mainly watch terrestrial tv. We only have now tv and Netflix which I haven't used now tv in months so not actually sure why we still have it.
Don't watch Netflix that much either!

Titsywoo · 01/12/2020 23:54

I never really watch terrestrial tv now. Netflix or prime mainly. We do have freesat but apart from to watch the news every now and then I don't use it.

LagunaBubbles · 02/12/2020 00:02

It doesn't need to be one or the other. Lots of programmes on normal TV I love and don't think are "stupid" either. Des on ITV recently was great.

Zilla1 · 02/12/2020 00:11

'Most of the BBC's output is, as I've said, either stupid or really depressing. IMO, anyway.'

What Netflix shows do you watch, OP, that are significantly more intelligent than the BBC's output (BBC Four and Radio 4 and World service if you stretch your TV post to include radio)?

switswooo · 02/12/2020 00:15

Netflix are churning out a lot of 'made for TV' movies and Hallmark type series like Virgin River. Going to check out what's on over Xmas hut may cancel in NY.
