Achey joints and periods. Am I weird???

Probably not an AIBU but wasn't sure where else to post.

During the first day of my period I get really achey ankles and knees.

Chatting to my mum and sister and they have both said this isn't due to my period and there must be a different cause.

Am I weird or does anyone else get this? The pain and ache is different to other aches and happens every time on the first day. I assumed it was a common side effect of periods! 🙈

@PunkyPirate I used to get achey thighs 🙈

Whodrankallmygin · 01/12/2020 18:14

You're definitely not weird! As Ivd got older, I get this more each month, plus feeling like I've got a cold coming for couple of days before period arrives! X

D4rwin · 01/12/2020 18:15

I used to get aches in my joints from a young age during my periods. I'm a generally crunchy clikey joint person and it was noticeably worse at the start of periods. A Dr once suggested it could be due to water retention. I've no clue if that is true

WorraLiberty · 01/12/2020 18:15

Google "Why do my joints hurt on a period?"

It says it can be caused by low estrogen levels.

Justmuddlingalong · 01/12/2020 18:15

My SIL has hypermobility and it seems to worsen during her period.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 01/12/2020 18:16

I get it too. So that means you're as weird as me. Quite how weird that is is up for debate Grin

Crakeandoryx · 01/12/2020 18:19

I hurt and are stiff all over 5 days up to and during my period. Then is miraculously disappears. I have dreadful periods and symptoms and feel ill for some of every month because of my periods. I also get severe mood swings and I'm on anti depressants for pmdd.

I was tried on a few the contraceptive pills for about 6 months but they made me go insane so I'm clearly very very susceptible to my hormones!

Pandamumium · 01/12/2020 18:22

My DD 15 has problems with her knees and they get worse when she has her period.

Thats interesting. I also have the ability to almost grow a full beard. My hormones must be way out of whack!
1990shopefulftm · 01/12/2020 18:28

I get that, believe it's something to do with prostaglandin levels being different.

LucyLastik · 01/12/2020 18:31

I thought that was just me!

heidihigh · 01/12/2020 18:31

Yes, I get this! Mine is usually my hips and the top of my arms though. Very annoying!

anormalperson · 01/12/2020 18:33

I have inflammatory arthritis and it's miles worse just before my period,

DuckingFogg · 01/12/2020 18:33

Yes I get that. Also any old injuries seem to flare up even if I haven't aggravated them at that time, I damaged my knee last year and it still gives me a bit of trouble from time to time if I've done a lot of stairs or hills walking, it'll swell then, but it always swells a few days before my period regardless of what I've done so the water retention theory could be on to something.

PhatPhanny · 01/12/2020 18:36

The app flo is good for helping understand different things in your cycle, not ashamed to say I've learnt a lot of things I never knew and im all fully grown adult mostly 😂

I get aches and pains, migraines, boobies hurt, uterus feels like its trying to escape, all kinds of wonderful things that I never did as a spritely youngun

oneglassandpuzzled · 01/12/2020 18:38

Falling œstrogen makes sense as aching joints is also a menopausal symptom for some women.

Lalalatte · 01/12/2020 19:07

Definitely get this. I don't have periods very often now but seems to come with aching joints - knee, hip, shoulder and hands.

WorraLiberty · 01/12/2020 19:08

Wait til you're menopausal like me.

I'm afraid to wear red in case I get mistaken for Santa 🤷‍♀️😂

Dwrcegin · 01/12/2020 19:17

Period symptoms are weird, there are so many. Back and legs get so painful, rest of my joints get more clicky and ache like mad, topped off with a migraine, etc and its a miserable week.

notyetamumbuttrying · 01/12/2020 19:33

@PunkyPirate I get achy wrists when I'm due on. Everyone displays differently when it comes to periods and don't all get the same symptoms. You're not alone in the achy joints department and it only ever happens for me a day or two before I come on.

DinoGreen · 01/12/2020 19:44

I always get achey legs and also generally my whole pelvic area aches - I always want to lie down! But like you it’s only the first day so I’ve always just chalked it up as one of those weird symptoms!

Blossomhill123 · 01/12/2020 19:48

I feel like I’m 90 when my period is due . Think it’s something to do with hormone levels going down .

Mimitoo · 01/12/2020 19:48

Yes - I get cramps in my legs but especially thighs and hips. Only started during last couple of years as my periods have gone slightly longer between cycles...getting old Confused

MrsMigginsMate · 01/12/2020 19:53

My pain threshold is much lower on my period so it could be your perception of every day aches and pains, just noticing them a bit more than usual? I never epilate my legs around that time of the month for example because I just cant stand the pain, but other times of the month I barely feel it.

Chosennonesneakymincepie · 01/12/2020 20:10

This only started with me aged 40+. Achey legs, hips and lower back and now arms! Headachey too. Sometimes have a migraine. My friend recommended a cold liver oil supplements. Haven't tried them yet.
