Achey joints and periods. Am I weird???

Probably not an AIBU but wasn't sure where else to post.

During the first day of my period I get really achey ankles and knees.

Chatting to my mum and sister and they have both said this isn't due to my period and there must be a different cause.

Am I weird or does anyone else get this? The pain and ache is different to other aches and happens every time on the first day. I assumed it was a common side effect of periods! 🙈

When l was a teenager, yes achey knees and lower back.

NameChangeUnwiseAdvice · 01/12/2020 20:23

Yes I call it Period Flu it makes me feel manky. Currently got it so tucked up with a blanket and a whole chocolate orange.

There was a thread here ages ago about random symptoms that the OP has realised were period related and so many posters (me included) came on and posted ours - they varied from muscle aches to twitches, vomiting to having lots of energy.

It took me a lot longer than it should have to realise that the 'random' restless night of no sleep and the few days of being unable to walk very far without my back and hips being horrendously painful were related to my period. So was the phases of forgetfulness and being clumsy, along with upset stomach, headaches, dry skin patches and wondering if maybe my DH isn't the right match for me Confused
This should be taught in schools so girls don't end up feeling alone / weird!

My hypermobility is always worse before my period and makes me incredibly clumsy. And perimenopause means everything is achy anyway.

firesong · 01/12/2020 21:11

Nope, but I get aching hips and thighs!

SunshineYello · 01/12/2020 21:36

Yeah, I get this. But I have PCOS and it's a combination of low oestrogen.(a PP has mentioned this) and increased androgens (also cause lively facial hair that I had to have zapped). Interestingly, the only thing that ever cures it is going on anti-depressants, so not very helpful I'm afraid. An NHS physio (pre-pcos and anxiety diagnosis) did decline to treat me many moons ago, and did tell me there is a big link between your mental state and hormones and joint pain. I did think it was weird at the time, as in 'my pain is very real, and not imagined', but seeing as medication cured it, he was onto something!

SunshineYello · 01/12/2020 21:36

Lovely, not lively! FFS - got images of my chin hairs having a party together on my face!

Scotsmaw · 01/12/2020 21:45

I have RA and my condition is way worse in the days before my period gets better on day 4.

EpidermolysisBullosa · 01/12/2020 21:55

I have achey joints during my period too, especially lower back pain. I have ehlers danlos syndrome and have always attributed it to that.

I have the same with most colds - I get achey joints like you get with flu, especially my knees.

piglet81 · 01/12/2020 21:59

I get really clumsy a couple of days beforehand. It’s my most reliable warning sign (closely followed by murderous rage towards my husband...). Hormones are so weird.

The3rdWatermelon · 01/12/2020 22:05

I got terrible achey knees during my period as a teenager and in my very early twenties. It wasn’t a normal joint ache, the only way I could describe it was that I felt sick inside my knees. It seemed to go away in my mid-20s.

HappyHedgehog247 · 01/12/2020 22:10

@Scotsmaw I have RA and joints also much worse at specific times of cycle. Contraceptive pill helped when younger and when I had some IVF I went magically into remission when on the stimulants!

CorpusCallosum · 01/12/2020 22:56

Yep my knees go achey and swell up, I've had it since before my periods really started but in the same cycle.

It was bad enough to see a GP and he was like 'nope can't be related to periods'.... well now that's 30+ years of the same thing happening at the same time each month that's pure coincidence Hmm

Jesscarbqueen87 · 01/12/2020 23:21

When I’m on my period I get aches in the upper part of the back of my thighs and the lower part of my bum 🙈 no idea why? I had the same aches at the end of both of my pregnancies too. So strange?

Pjsandbaileys · 01/12/2020 23:28

Yes and a bit of a sore throat, I get the dreaded feeling I'm coming down with something but nope it's just my period lol

AJ1425 · 01/12/2020 23:38

I get aches in my thighs and it wasn't til a thread on here I realised it was connected. I also have a stomach hernia and the symptoms are always worse around my period.
