Carrie Bradshaw - A CF, right?

Nikhedonia · 29/11/2020 20:09

She's a pretty self-obsessed shit friend, but a CF too, right?

I rewatched an episode the other day where she needed to buy her apartment and she expected Charlotte to sell her engagement ring to fund the purchase Shock

I reckon if SATC were real, Miranda or Charlotte would be on MN gushing about their best friend being incredible and everyone would be calling Carrie a CF and advising them to go NC.

Just re-watching it now actually - midway through season 3.
Yes Carrie's a pain in the butt... I can't believe her friends don't tell her to STFU when she whines on about Big, etc.
Thought Aiden was lovely - a real catch. Big just made me laugh as he was a cliché on legs.

Nosnogginginthekitchen · 30/11/2020 06:45

How has nobody mentioned the episode where Miranda throws her back out and Carrie cba to go help her, but just sends Aiden over.
God I fancied Aiden so much. He's adorable. Fucking Carrie. I didn't like her when I watched it in my twenties. I really don't like her now. And Charlotte is so anti feminist it hurts.

I do love Miranda though. I love that scene where she gets pg and says something like "I have one ovary and he's missing a testicle. In what universe should I get pregnant?" (I am very much paraphrasing though. It's been a while)

Carrie is just awful!

@MarchionessofActon

I love it when she’s sadly mooching around Paris with a face like a slapped arse in her ridiculous take on ‘Parisian‘ outfits. She doesn’t go to a single museum or gallery, or enjoy the amazing hotel, just bleats about everything after about 24 hours.
T😂😂😂
stampsurprise · 30/11/2020 06:59

"... and I couldn't help but wonder... how come I have any friends at all being the cunt that I am?!" Shock

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 30/11/2020 07:18

I hated how they made Miranda give up her career and care for her MIL and baby when she don’t really want to. And she took her cheating husband back (who cheated because she was busy with work and a baby which made it her fault)

I used it in conversation with my pregnant friend the other day! I can't quite remember either but she says something like they're participants in 'The Special Olympics of conception . . . '
Dreamylemon · 30/11/2020 07:26

I was never a fan of satc but I always though you weren't meant to like Carrie? She was like an overgrown self obbesssed teenager.

HazelWong · 30/11/2020 07:30

Carrie is awful but my unpopular opinion is that I hate Steve.

This reddit thread basically summarises why. He tramples on her boundaries, expects everything to revolve around him. We are somehow supposed to think that that is ok because he "accepts her" - gosh, how hard it must be to accept a beautiful successful woman who can also be guilted into doing all the wifework

I think Candice Bushell based Carrie on herself, although I’m sure she was nowhere near as annoying! Miranda and Charlotte are definitely mentioned in her book, but only as passing characters in certain stories, not as close friends of Carrie’s. I can’t remember if Smith is mentioned, it’s been awhile since I read it. The series was originally written by a group of women, but over time Michael Patrick King took over, and at that point the characters be started to become more vacuous, self-centred, and unrealistic. I think he was solely responsible for writing the last series, perhaps the ones before I can’t remember, and definitely the two movies.

Woofbloodywoof · 30/11/2020 07:43

There’s a bit in Toby Young’s memoir How To Alienate... mentioning knowing Candace Bushnell and her saying quite openly to him that she was only interested in dating rich men and would only marry someone way richer than her. Given that Carrie is a thinly disguised self portrait that pretty much tells you all you need to know.

I wonder how damaging the influence of SATC was on women of my generation. I know mates of mine would rack up stupid debt on credit cards buying stuff they saw Carrie wearing on the show. I never thought it was empowering because it was still about abdicating responsibility to a bloke in the end.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 30/11/2020 07:43

Most comedy is of its time, but SATC really has not aged well. I used to love it back in the day when it first aired. Now all the characters come across as either horribly selfish or entitled.

Iamthewombat · 30/11/2020 08:51

I thought that Candace Bushnell came out rather well from Toby Young’s book. He liked her and described her as smart and witty. Her books were not much like the TV series, but she certainly understood the New York dating scene.

I, too, hated Steve. Did not get him at all. He was really irritating. Miranda was way out of his league.

Candleabra · 30/11/2020 09:12

Interesting re: Steve. I agree with the comments above. however, my husband always thought Steve was way out of Miranda's league and was a fool to get back with her after Brady was born.
To be honest, no-one really comes out well in SATC. Even Aiden (who was lovely to start with) was pretty abusive by the end, paranoid after carrie's affair. They should never have got back together.
I think Stanford was about the only ok character in the whole show (of the cast who stayed throughout).

Nikhedonia · 30/11/2020 09:13

When Miranda decided to move to Brooklyn Carrie was such a twat to her about it.

Not a big fan of Steve in the beginning but he definitely got better. The writers made a big deal of the fact he was good in bed, as if that was something so unusual we should put up with lots of other shit. I felt he was selfish and very much like a child. Annoyed that Miranda didn't want to shag him in the middle of the night when she needs to get up for work in 2 hours.

How did Aiden become abusive, I can't remember any of that

Oh and when Miranda give birth and wanted silence so Carrie told Steve not to cry. He’s just had a baby! He can cry if he wants to.
Most sterile, unloving, emotionless birth ever!

MandalaYogaTapestry · 30/11/2020 09:27

Nickeldonia for argument's sake, Miranda and Steve were already having sex in that instance. And they had to be up in 4 hours.

I did laugh at "it suddenly feels like there's a giraffe in the room" though Grin

And when Carrie tells Samantha "it's a boy" and she says something like great what the world needs, another man Grin

I've never watched it all as I didnt watch much tv when I was young but I've seen snippets and both the films. My friends loved SATC and at the time aspired to be Carrie but I just didnt get her at all, my friends joked I was too much of a Charlotte type character to understand Carrie. To be honest I thought all of the characters were terrible friends. I'd quite like to watch some episodes now after reading this thread

She shakes her head or something at her and is like "no Steve". She's such a bitch.

Because Miranda told her to. Whenever anyone gets excitable Miranda looks at Carrie to stop them.
