To ask if I’m the weirdo?

Hi all

Just read an article re a teacher in the US who went to the loo whilst on a Zoom call and forgot to turn her video stream off, obviously resulting in all the participants witnessing said trip to the loo.

Majority of comments under the article are people saying that it’s disgusting and they would never take their laptop into the loo with them, let alone go whilst on a call.

I’m not a teacher but have been WFH since early March and will admit to doing this on several occasions (on a long call, haven’t needed to input for a while, desperate for the loo, mute myself and take laptop in with me and balance it on bath edge while I have a quick wee), but not when I’m on video mind.

Anyone else? Or am I the weirdo?

No way would I do this!!

gingerwhinger0 · 28/11/2020 17:57

I would be worried that I forgot to mute, so no on that basis alone.
Also, it is a bit minging. I don't like it when you're in public loos and you can hear someone chatting away on a mobile. Time and place and toilets aren't it.

topcat2014 · 28/11/2020 17:57

Too risky..

Doublebubblebubble · 28/11/2020 17:59

Nope. I wouldnt. I do think its odd. What could possibly happen in the 2 minutes that you wee for that you need to take your laptop with you? Also, assuming you are washing your hands each time you use the toilet but are you also cleaning your laptop after each visit?

I wouldnt call you a weirdo so much as a fomo.

MushMonster · 28/11/2020 18:02

Nope, not to be done. You would not do it in real life, so just ask to be excuse and go.

JacobReesMogadishu · 28/11/2020 18:03

No but I was in a 3 hour zoom meeting recently which I didn’t dare leave and did consider weeing in the cat litter tray in the corner(video was off). Have a desktop, so couldn’t take it to the bathroom.

Diverseduvet · 28/11/2020 18:03

No way. Excuse yourself and leave the laptop or just go.

PearlclutchersInc · 28/11/2020 18:05

You're wierd....... but then I don't take into the loo either - yuk Smile

thedevilinablackdress · 28/11/2020 18:05

Fuck no.
Unless you're a secret exhibitionist.

GeidiPrimes · 28/11/2020 18:07

I had this dilemma a while back, I was having a telephone counselling session. In the end I decided against it as I thought she might hear me peeing, or wonder why I suddenly sounded echoey. But when I did ask, she queried whether I needed to really go!

mrsrobin · 28/11/2020 18:08

I would, another wierdo it seems!

Badwill · 28/11/2020 18:08

No, if it's really important I leave the laptop outside the bathroom door, faced away, camera off and muted but generally will just leave it on the desk and run fast to the bathroom.

It amazes me how lax people are on zoom though, from colleagues smoking/vaping to having their full dinner I'm often Confused

ShortSilence · 28/11/2020 18:09

No, I wouldn’t do this. Too many ways for it to go wrong.

sofiaaaaaa · 28/11/2020 18:10

Absolutely not.

A call on my iPhone perhaps, as I have quick visual confirmation that the volume is on mute. Of course I would be incredibly quick.

Never with an entire laptop whilst you’re on a zoom call to dozens of people. The risk is immense.

Proudboomer · 28/11/2020 18:16

Could have been worse and got caught doing a Jeffrey Toobin

MitziK · 28/11/2020 18:17

God, no.

Bluetooth earphones and leave the laptop safely behind.

WitchesSpelleas · 28/11/2020 18:18

Confused Just leave the meeting for the two or three minutes it will take!

If you're worried you might be called on in that space of time, use the meeting chat or hand raise to the chair to say, 'Apologies, I need to leave but will be back in 5 minutes' or similar.

user1745632169 · 28/11/2020 18:19

Yeh, that is fucking weird.

Waveysnail · 28/11/2020 18:19

God no. Just write a quick msg excusing yourself.

lockeddownandcrazy · 28/11/2020 18:26

I wouldnt personally. I'd mute and nip quickly.

Ohdoleavemealone · 28/11/2020 18:26

No but we have an ensuite and I have actually as a teacher, left the desktop (in bedroom) whilst students are doing questions independantly, to nip to the toilet 8ft away. Muted of course.

ShirleyPhallus · 28/11/2020 18:27

Also, assuming you are washing your hands each time you use the toilet but are you also cleaning your laptop after each visit?

Would you really need to clean down your laptop from a 20 second trip to the loo?

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 28/11/2020 18:27

Not a chance

PaperTowels · 28/11/2020 18:28

Ick. No way would I do that Confused

NotTheMrMenAgain · 28/11/2020 18:35

Nah, you're not weird at all - people are just too uptight.
