Someone posted this in a group I am in, and I find it really offensive AIBU?!

OP posts:
Besswess88 · 28/11/2020 18:10

@TooLittleTooLate80

Probably because we are in lockdown, I am completely alone as my husband got sent away last minute, my kids have left home and the Internet is the only company I have right now other than at work and I don’t work weekends, and it’s raining.

If you can tell me how you imagine I can get a different life please let me know as you clearly have a lot more on than me.

It's very dated. I'm not offended, but I would think someone sharing it nowadays was a bit tone deaf. It's sexist and outdated, it's not funny, I'd definitely be eye rolling at whoever posted it and think they were a bit of a knob

viccytwiffy · 28/11/2020 18:49

my friend had big boobs and at college one guy thought it was very funny to always put his hands on her boobs and literally assault her... in a joking way, but it was aggressive gropping...and people would laugh and at first she did laugh , but then every day it happened and it really upset her... which is totally understandable (this was about 1989). this cartoon uses the image metaphore - melons for boobs - but you are entitled as the viewer to pretend that you have absolutely no idea what the joke is, I mean melons / boobs - its not science or fact..... that way you don't have to suffer the poor humour and can save yourself in terms of wasting energy being wound up....the husband wants to put his hands on a pair of watermelons.. quite normal don't you think if you like eating watermelons... it makes perfect sense....

Duckwit · 28/11/2020 18:52

I'm surprised that someone would post this in 2020. Not because it's offensive to women (which it is) but because its such a done to death, unoriginal joke. How could the person who posted think 'ha, no one will have heard this one before, hilaaarious'!

There is nothing even vaguely clever about it?!

HerselfIndoors · 28/11/2020 18:57

OP I'm just returning a bit late to support you re the Jimmy Savile and rape comments (though you defended yourself perfectly). Referring to appalling things doesn't mean you're automatically in the wrong, as some posters seem to think. It was clear what you meant and furthermore they are very relevant points.

It was the under-the-carpet, laugh it off, don't ask questions attitude of the 70s and before that allowed so many people, mainly women and girls, to suffer so much sexual assault and so often not be believed or cared about. And it is precisely the attitude that it's funny to imply that if boobs look like melons you might as well grab them, that leads on to and encourages an attitude that women's bodies are men's to do what they like with - and in some cases that is rape.

Shock and outrage that you'd compare a "funny" postcard to rape is just an indicator of not seeing clearly how embedded sexism and misogyny works. In fact a key part of it is encouraging women to take the smaller boundary-tramplings as a joke and not be so "humourless", and to sneer at other women who aren't as cool with it.

HeyBaby2020 · 28/11/2020 19:02

Oh get a grip you wet wipe

CharlotteRose90 · 28/11/2020 19:03

It’s childish but not rude at all. Think this stems from the horrible comments you had in the past

HeyBaby2020 · 28/11/2020 19:04

@Besswess88

It’s so sexist.

It’s not ok at all, we need to move on from this shit.

LOL
NiceGerbil · 28/11/2020 19:10

Not rude at all Grin

OP is traumatised by her past and so lost her sense of humour Sad

Erm joking about men grabbing women's tits is.. totally different to men grabbing women's tits. Of course! It's obvious one explained like that.

Meraas · 28/11/2020 19:18

@NiceGerbil so you’d be fine with your brother or boss or friend joking about grabbing your tits?

GalaxyCookieCrumble · 28/11/2020 19:28

Offended no

NoPainNoTartine · 28/11/2020 19:30
@NiceGerbil so you’d be fine with your brother or boss or friend joking about grabbing your tits?
don't be daft and play naive, it makes you sound silly.

It's as stupid as saying you don't like broccolis, so they should be banned.

You don't have to like the joke, it doesn't matter. You don't get to ban the joke. You can ask for an appropriate work environment, but if your boss wants to joke in his private time, he can.

Meraas · 28/11/2020 19:41

@NoPainNoTartine why is it silly? You never explain.

NoPainNoTartine · 28/11/2020 19:44

you never bother reading the posts you disagree with, so what's the point?

Anyway, it's not about being "fine" or "not fine". It doesn't matter.
You can joke about absolutely anything, just chose your audience. At best you can ask someone not to direct a joke to you, and obviously keep things appropriate when directed to children.

You cannot ban something you disagree with from a public group.

Peachy1381 · 28/11/2020 19:48

I’d probably not make a huge deal about it but you’re right it is really sexist and I’d judge/avoid like the plague anyone who genuinely found this funny. Dirty old man humour...ewww

NiceGerbil · 28/11/2020 19:50

Erm I was being sarcastic :/

You can look at my earlier post if you like.

The fact it's not obvious I was being sarcastic is in itself a bit worrying :/

NiceGerbil · 28/11/2020 19:53

'You can joke about absolutely anything, just chose your audience. At best you can ask someone not to direct a joke to you, and obviously keep things appropriate when directed to children.

You cannot ban something you disagree with from a public group.'

That's entirely contradictory.

First point. I like the occasional racist joke, choose who I say it to. Ok got it.

At the same time, it's ok to post (tell) the joke to general audiences.

Yes that is a very logical position Grin

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/11/2020 19:53

Yabu, I don’t find it offensive, I like smutty humour.

NiceGerbil · 28/11/2020 19:57

How weird! Watching Mitchell and Webb with the kids and this sketch was just on. Bawdy 1970s hosp sketch.

They're always v funny so suggest watching whichever 'side' you are on!

NoPainNoTartine · 28/11/2020 20:07

What's contradictory? Confused

I am laughing at the content of your post and your difficulty in grasping basic concepts Grin

You have the right to be offended, but it doesn't matter, it has no effect on anything.

Ohtherewearethen · 28/11/2020 20:10

@Besswess88 - forgive me if I missed it but I'm not aware of a response regarding the question about whether you refuse to buy diet Coke because of their hideously offensive and objectifying adverts featuring women salivating over a man's body and planning their 'diet coke break' around being able to perv at him, much more recently and on mainstream television than a 50 year old cartoon which makes a man look like a desperate sex pest for wanting to touch some melons which he thinks are like a lady's breasts?
As for saying this cartoon is no different from a gollywog, you are completely wrong on that one and if you can't see that then I'm truly sorry for you.

NoPainNoTartine · 28/11/2020 20:10

Plus how would that even work...

you are offended by a joke, you get it banned
I am offended by your reaction, I get you banned

yes, that'll work Grin

NiceGerbil · 28/11/2020 20:12

I'm not offended though!

I'm in a very good mood.

Did you watch the Mitchell and Webb thing?

NoPainNoTartine · 28/11/2020 20:12

You would have a point if the OP's face had been photoshopped or drawn on the cartoon.

It's not about her, so who cares if she is offended. People can share jokes. You are not in a position to decide what is acceptable or not.

NiceGerbil · 28/11/2020 20:13

Oh god diet Coke really?

Well I may have looked at a handsome man. And random men may have grabbed my tits (and undercarriage) in the pub.

Fairs fair!
