Thing is - Golliwogs could be viewed in the same way as these postcards.

I really think that's a false comparison. Full on racism against "hur hur boobies"?
CSIblonde · 28/11/2020 11:47

It's Carry On film humour. Not pc any more , but I still like Carry On films: because they're my childhood & it's nostalgia.

Besswess88 · 28/11/2020 11:47

I don’t have an agenda 🤷‍♀️

@PrincessNutNut

They both come from the same place - it all starts somewhere 🤷‍♀️

I think it's gross, although I wouldn't say I'm offended. I do think the time has passed for women's bodies to be articles of humour. I can see why you would be upset if you've been subject to this kind of misogynist "joke" before.

I wonder how many of the people who think it's just a joke would feel the same if they had a large breasted daughter who had been harassed by this sort of comment.

DimidDavilby · 28/11/2020 11:50

I do not think you will help your argument - at all - by comparing it to racism Hmm

Bluepolkadots42 · 28/11/2020 11:50

It's lazy and pathetic humour to be honest- I'm only offended by how shockingly bad it is. Would be great if this crap was left to languish in the past where it belongs.

chomalungma · 28/11/2020 11:50

You might get an interesting response from the person who originally posted it on the group to ask why it's funny?

Always amusing to hear people explain why something that is racist / sexist is funny or amusing in their eyes.

You'll probably get called a snowflake. That happened to me when I asked someone on a group who posted an outdated sexist joke why it was funny.

Some people get very offended and upset when asked to explain why things are funny to them.

LouJ85 · 28/11/2020 11:50

I think it's a bit naff and unfunny. But not even remotely "offensive".

Besswess88 · 28/11/2020 11:51

Why is racism worse than sexism?

Well, yes, they’re also outdated and unacceptable to most people, if rather demonstrative of far nastier underlying attitudes. Your point being?
NoPainNoTartine · 28/11/2020 11:51

The OP wants to be offended and is clutching at straw.

Desperately trying to merge this with child abuse, domestic violence, racism - and whatever else you've tried to throw in the mix - is not helping you at all.

The only offensive person on here is you!

Ultimately it doesn't matter if you find them offensive or hilarious. You don't get to ban them and decide what is acceptable and what isn't.

MrsKoala · 28/11/2020 11:54

I studied this in 1998 btw it was fairly accepted then by the academics teaching that it was offensive to women and part of a larger picture of objectification. So it isn’t some recent snowflake wokeness.

gingerwhinger0 · 28/11/2020 11:55

Yes, but that’s only the young and sexy ones. The matrons are the ‘victims’ of this humour.
The older ones come across to me as battle axes, not to be messed with imo, not victims. They are huge and overpowering in the imagery, whereas the men puny and weak.
It was similar theme in old time Coronation street, I don't watch it anymore, but the female characters where always strong and sassy. Bet Lynch was quite a 'slutty' looking character, but you knew not to mess with her. Elsie Tanner, Rita, very strong 'battle axe' type characters, whereas the men are always a bit pathetic.
I'm not saying its an ideal portrayal of women, but at least in the post cards women are getting portrayed as strong in both instances, either because of their sexuality, or the formidability (if that's a word) Where as the men folk are just letchy old pervs.

Besswess88 · 28/11/2020 11:56

The fact that it only became illegal to rape your wife in 1992 in the UK is a pretty nasty underlying undertone.

I don’t think any protected characteristic trumped any other tbh.

I think when we shrug our shoulders at any of it, it lets in the more sinister underlying stuff.

@borntobequiet

It was seen as crass and old fashioned in the 1970s, which I remember well. Happily we have moved on from this type of so called humour. Unhappily we have moved on into a world where sexual violence is normalised via porn, and gender roles are so rigidly defined that little girls with short hair who enjoy playing football are encouraged to think they are really boys.
Yep
Brefugee · 28/11/2020 11:57

It's a "saucy" postcard and as such interesting to see where we are with humour like that now.

If you really want to let people know you don't find it funny for personal reasons, you could ask them to explain it as you don't get it (as some of us do with racist or otherwise offensive jokes)

However. Being the posessor of enormous melons myself and having been on the end of handsy people all my life, you'll never get anyone to agree with you and they'll just think you're being too touchy. Sorry.

Justsocross · 28/11/2020 11:58

It’s just old fashioned humour. Not offensive to me

Chickychickydodah · 28/11/2020 12:05

Not offensive at all, just old fashioned fun

LindaEllen · 28/11/2020 12:07

@Besswess88

Because it’s so smutty and it absolutely objectifies women.

Maybe it hits a raw nerve with me particularly because I have large boobs and have had to put up with shit like this (comments) my entire adult (and teenage) life.

The strange thing is, it's a picture of a guy, buying melons, and it says he likes melons.

You could quite easily take that at face value, but it's you who's attached a 'smutty' meaning to it.

Also, I think it's actually more offensive (if at all, I mean) to men rather than women - because this kind of thing doesn't reflect poorly on women, it reflects poorly on men due to the attitude portrayed.

But yes, as I said, you are the one who chose to add the 'offensive' meaning to this, OP.

Bvop · 28/11/2020 12:08

It’s naff, but we don’t have the right to curate the stuff we’re exposed to, to ensure we only see things we feel comfortable with.

Palaver1 · 28/11/2020 12:09

Why do some not see how offensive some things are why bring up the golliwog statement .

iklboogeymum · 28/11/2020 12:10

So you're saying that anyone who finds this funny or isn't offended by it is also a racist who supports marital rape, spousal violence and child abuse?

See what extrapolation can do?

TheCrowsHaveEyes · 28/11/2020 12:10

Is there a bingo card for this thread? Because so far I've got : Facebook post; offensive comments; sexism; ageism; racism ... I think I'm just waiting for parking. But if it's an intersectional bingo card then maybe it's TWAW that I'm waiting for Hmm
