Honest to god i'm dreading christmas shopping Sad
It's a small family for mine, just me, dh and my mother and we're going to go to his mum's for xmas dinner the day after anyways (I know, greedy Grin)
Wibu to just use a large chicken? I can't be assed with a turkey tbh. Too long to cook and just a hassle.

Just do it. We're having a small joint of pork and veggie roast for me and DD.

minionsrule · 27/11/2020 14:28

We had chicken last year for me, dh and ds after ds admitted he preferred it as did dh, I'm not fussed.
Doing the same this year, no law to say you have to have turkey

ShowOfHands · 27/11/2020 14:29

I'm doing a joint of beef for lunch, slow cooked ham for the buffet bit/leftovers and a veggie roast doodah for those who don't eat meat.

Not a turkey in sight for the first time in my 39 years on earth.

littlekipling · 27/11/2020 14:30

we had a lovely organic farm shop chicken for just the 2 of us last year (decided to get best chicken we could afford seeing as not bothering with turkey) and we both preferred it..probably doing same this year too :) enjoy it!

BarbaraofSeville · 27/11/2020 14:30

YANBU to get whatever meat you like although I don't understand the difference in 'hassle' between the chicken and the turkey. You just put either one in the oven until its cooked don't you? Plus if you have a decent amount of leftovers, there's no need to cook for about 3 days after and/or you have meat you can freeze for later.

As for shopping for food. If you go quite early (before 7 am) on either 23rd or 24th, the shops are quiet and fully stocked and you can be back home in time for breakfast. Nothing at all to dread.

TeenPlusTwenties · 27/11/2020 14:31

YABU. The best thing about turkey at Christmas is the left overs and not having to meal plan / cook for the next week. Smile

Cook what you want to eat!

BrimfulOfBaba · 27/11/2020 14:34

YANBU, have what you'll enjoy. We realised years ago none of us actually enjoyed turkey, and have had roast lamb ever since Grin

TheKeatingFive · 27/11/2020 14:36

Do it. If you get a fancy, loved-up one it’ll taste far better than a turkey.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 27/11/2020 14:38

We get an outrageously pampered chicken from the farm shop every year, it's just three of us. It's lush. Might go for a guinea fowl this year though, but never turkey.

thismeansnothing · 27/11/2020 14:40

I don't like turkey. So we have a chicken. Tbh it's all about the sides anyway 😍

StCharlotte · 27/11/2020 14:40

I do like turkey but for two of us (possibly three), I'll be doing chicken. But it will be an all-singing all-dancing one from the local butcher.

We also won't be bothering with loads of extra side dishes apart from a gallon of bread sauce and a ton of pigs in blankets. No poxy red cabbage for us!

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 27/11/2020 14:40

I'd 100% do a chicken in your shoes. It's only going to be four of us for Christmas dinner and my mum is cooking (at her insistence). I told her just to get a chicken or if she must a turkey crown, but she wants to do the whole big thing with a huge turkey so we can have leftovers 🤷‍♀️.

FatGirlShrinking · 27/11/2020 14:41

We're getting an Asda extra tasty roast in a bag chicken. Take out of fridge, put in oven. Remove bag for the last 20 minutes to crisp the skin and eat.

We are also buying the pre-prepped foil trays of roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, parsnips and carrots in honey. Using premade gravy and buying frozen Yorkshire's.

Fuck it, I say. I want Xmas lunch but I just cannot be doing with fuss and messing about this year.

Make it easy for yourself.

liveitwell · 27/11/2020 14:41

What difference does it make? It's a bird.

Cook and eat what you WANT to. Xmas is about enjoying yourself!

OneToThree · 27/11/2020 14:42

You’re allowed to eat whatever you fancy any day of the year you know Grin

x2boys · 27/11/2020 14:44

If it's a Mumsnet chicken you will have left overs for weeks anyway😂

Tealuver · 27/11/2020 14:44

We have always had chicken my whole life. I don't like turkey, it's dry

YANBU, hae whatever you want, but as a pp said, cooking a turkey is no more hassle than a chicken, if that is the issue. A small turkey crown will have the same cooking time as a roast chicken.

Daisiesinthemeadow · 27/11/2020 14:45

Thanks everybody x

I would quite happily never eat turkey. We never had one growing up.

Cook what you like!

TheDogsMother · 27/11/2020 14:47

I find turkey very dull and would always choose a good chicken instead. We're going to have venison this year for a change.

Mintjulia · 27/11/2020 14:47

There will only be two of us. I'm cooking chicken too. If I bought a turkey, we'd still be eating it in February.

Plus all the trimming. Then mince pies and cream. And a tiny ham with chips for boxing day. No Xmas cake or Xmas pub.

There will still be enough for chicken soup, and ham to nibble at for three days.

Just do it !
