Honest to god i'm dreading christmas shopping Sad
It's a small family for mine, just me, dh and my mother and we're going to go to his mum's for xmas dinner the day after anyways (I know, greedy Grin)
Wibu to just use a large chicken? I can't be assed with a turkey tbh. Too long to cook and just a hassle.
@LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett ooh thanks for mentioning Guinea Fowl! I was thinking of a chicken as only DS and me eat a bird. But guinea fowl is even better!
@AnnieKenneyfanclub there's a whole story about a guinea fowl and me falling off the veggie waggon but its quite outing. They are so tasty though - like chickens used to taste!

Steezy · 27/11/2020 19:31

I meant for doing chicken.

cheeseychovolate · 27/11/2020 19:40

Yes just go for chicken, they might not notice with everything else on their plate, my family wouldn't.

TheRubyRedshoes · 27/11/2020 19:59

Chicken is good enough for Heston!

I usually cook chicken breast fillets for DD and me, neither of us like turkey, and my mum never did turkey for Christmas either. When I was a child we always had chicken, and in later years roast beef.

I've only had turkey one year, when XMIL cooked it, and never since. DD and me might have beef this year, if my limited budget will allow it, but if not we'll be having chicken.

I only ever buy breast fillets though as I cannot abide bones and cutting meat off a whole cooked chicken just turns my stomach, and as we only like white breast meat, and everything else goes in the bin, I stopped buying whole chickens years ago.

Just have what you fancy for Xmas, there's no law to say you must have turkey, or even a roast.

It’s this www.wildmeat.co.uk/products/game-roulade @bengalcat. Very tasty and easy.

It's your Christmas! Have whatever you prefer! We've had various things over the years for Christmas dinner, turkey, goose, beef, lamb, duck... The two meats we don't tend to have at Christmas are chicken and pork, because these are the (cheaper) meats that we routinely have for roasts all year round, so they don't seem that special to us.

CharitySchmarity · 27/11/2020 22:33

We always have chicken and so did my parents. Why?

 1. it's cheaper
 2. it's nicer
 3. there are/were 4 people at Christmas dinner in both families so a turkey would have been a silly amount of meat!
bengalcat · 29/11/2020 11:18

@MinnieMountain thanks just ordered one ( and a squirrel for the dog )

Ffsffsffsffsffs · 29/11/2020 11:48

I've got a pre-prepared turkey breast with stuffing from Morrisons, cook from frozen in its own tinfoil tin, serves 8 (OK...) for a tenner. Plenty for the 4 of us, plus nibbles later.

Never seen the point of buying a whole bird at any time of the year as we only eat breast meat, certainly not buying a £80 beast from the butchers, no matter what tricks it can do, even when we had 16 for lunch!

Pigs in blankets are utterly non-negotiable, mind.

Happynow001 · 29/11/2020 11:58

Yep chicken from my nice butchers, for the last few years. This year spatchcocked chicken with freshly made sage and garlic butter under the skin, with fresh lemon slices under the bird and prosciutto or similar added for the last 20mins. Plus cauliflower cheese, butter bean casserole, roasted veg, shredded red cabbage roasted in fresh apple juice and cranberries, roasted parsnips, pork chipolates and Brussels sprouts with chestnuts. Yummy. 😋

PoppyOppy · 29/11/2020 13:52

We had egg and chips one Christmas Day. We'd had the year from hell and neither of us were really bothered about what we ate so that suited us.

This year it's Roasted Rib of Beef. 😋

Gobbycop · 29/11/2020 13:57

I can't stand turkey, complete shite.

Anything else.

Beef Wellington
Any other roasting joint
Chicken

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 29/11/2020 13:59

YABU - chicken is fine, still needs pigs in blankets

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/11/2020 14:01

I went into the butcher and ordered our turkey a couple of days ago. We love turkey, DH and DS2 are going to barbecue ours this year...

anyoldname76 · 29/11/2020 14:01

We are having lamb this year as it's our favourite.

Thismustbelove · 29/11/2020 14:03

I have cooked chicken for the last couple of years. Turkey is particularly bland and dry. If it tasted better, we’d all be eating it all year round wouldn’t we?!

SinkGirl · 29/11/2020 14:44

We have lamb. And this year have ordered porcetta from Waitrose so it’s very easy. Had much the same from M&S last year - embarrassingly there’s only two of us as our twins don’t really eat meat but keeps us in sandwiches for a while and they’re the best part of Christmas in my view 😬
