Honest to god i'm dreading christmas shopping Sad
It's a small family for mine, just me, dh and my mother and we're going to go to his mum's for xmas dinner the day after anyways (I know, greedy Grin)
Wibu to just use a large chicken? I can't be assed with a turkey tbh. Too long to cook and just a hassle.

If you're having Turkey the next day anyway (check that) make something quite different. Not a bird.

PawsAndPhytoncides · 27/11/2020 14:48

@minionsrule

We had chicken last year for me, dh and ds after ds admitted he preferred it as did dh, I'm not fussed. Doing the same this year, no law to say you have to have turkey
This is us.

Chicken for the first time last year - made the dinner infinitely better. Chicken all the way from now on.

minionsrule · 27/11/2020 14:52

@stcharlotte
Give me the address of your butcher, I want a chicken that sits and dances Grin

minionsrule · 27/11/2020 14:53

*sings, not sits! Confused

Ilovesandwiches · 27/11/2020 15:21

I prefer a turkey but lots of people prefer chicken! It is your Christmas, may as well cook what you guys prefer, not what tradition tells you to!! Xx

MrsToothyBitch · 27/11/2020 15:38

Just do it! We often have chicken roast for Christmas, so yummy. DM is sad because we're having beef this year and she prefers chicken roast for all the trimmings.

We never have turkey. There's only 3 of us and 2 of us won't eat it anyway. Revolting stuff.

cologne4711 · 27/11/2020 15:43

YABU because turkey farmers are stressed out about people celebrating in small groups and not buying large turkeys which they already have.

The above is actually true, but do what's best for you. If you can't use a turkey don't bother with one. I love turkey and we're happy eating leftovers for days, but Christmas should be fun, not just a massive cauldron of stress!

(PS they don't actually take that long to cook, a hour longer than your average chicken)

Squirrelblanket · 27/11/2020 15:47

These posts always amaze me because of:

  1. The number of people who seem to need permission from others to cook and eat what they like.
  1. The number of people who've been eating something for years that they don't actually enjoy.

Especially no 2. WTF! 😂😂

bengalcat · 27/11/2020 15:50

Sounds good - we’re having partridge - well one each only me DH and DD and will need a couple of spares for the pets

MinnieMountain · 27/11/2020 15:58

We’re having game roulade (for the adults) and chicken. I’ve never had turkey for Christmas.

Calmandmeasured1 · 27/11/2020 16:01

Eat whatever you like. Who cares?

^^ This.

Plus the number of people who've been doing loads of things to do with Christmas that they don't want to and have never done anything to try and change it. As illustrated by the people who were hoping for lockdown to continue over Christmas so they didn't 'have' to have Christmas at the inlaws and then were devastated when the Christmas bubbles of 3 allowed this again.

I don't understand this. We always get a single large turkey breast from a local farm shop. It does me and DP, plus lots of leftovers for sandwiches and some for the freezer. On the years when we've hosted 6-8 people, the same roast does the main lunch and a much smaller amount of leftovers.

So all the turkey farmers and shops have to do is cut up their massive turkeys and sell them as joints, which will probably be far more popular as many people don't eat the leg meat anyway. But the legs will also sell as a joint or go into mince or sausages with other non breast meat.

Daisiesinthemeadow · 27/11/2020 16:22

I was also thinking of doing a beef wellington instead if anybody has tried that? Smile

@MinnieMountain I like the sound of game roulade

IMNOTSHOUTING · 27/11/2020 16:49

My butcher does me a turkey roll (basially turkey breast) with stuffing inside. Super easy to cook and takes about the same time as a chicken. It's tasty and Christmasy.

Crankley · 27/11/2020 17:00

I've ordered a capon from a London butchers. I had one last year. It tasted delicious, far better than a turkey.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 27/11/2020 17:08

Cook what you like, we're having a chicken, joint of beef and ham.

AlexaPlayWhiteNoise · 27/11/2020 17:17

If it was up to me its not we'd have lasagne for Christmas dinner. Or just pigs in blankets with mash. I'd allow veg and gravy. That's what I usually just have on my plate anyway. I can't stand turkey. 🦃

starfishmummy · 27/11/2020 17:19

YANBU. Have what you want. Beans on toast if thats what you fancy!!

Sewrainbow · 27/11/2020 17:22

I'm doing chicken for us 4!

JacobReesMogadishu · 27/11/2020 17:23

I’m just doing a chicken, one of those in a bag ones! I’m the only meat eater in the house. Chicken is nicer than turkey anway. Do it!

Sewrainbow · 27/11/2020 17:24

Last year we had all day breakfast for lunch but that was because the cooker packed up as I was about to cook! Grin

wizzbangfizz · 27/11/2020 17:26

I was thinking about this I'd rather get a really nice large fancy chicken but DH is moaning that he wants turkey Hmm

malhurst · 27/11/2020 17:35

Turkey is only a vehicle for bread sauce, and then to use in sandwiches and curry afterwards. I really can’t see the point of it in any other capacity. However if you are surrounded by turkey-demanders then just get a crown.

omg35 · 27/11/2020 17:38

Definitely having chicken! It's so much nicer than turkey
