Daisiesinthemeadow · 27/11/2020 14:25

Honest to god i'm dreading christmas shopping Sad
It's a small family for mine, just me, dh and my mother and we're going to go to his mum's for xmas dinner the day after anyways (I know, greedy Grin)
Wibu to just use a large chicken? I can't be assed with a turkey tbh. Too long to cook and just a hassle.

We never have turkey because I’m the only one that likes it. We have chicken and beef.

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/11/2020 18:01

We will be 3 for Christmas Dinner. 5 if the inlaws want to come. Big posh chicken here, with some gammon if I fancy it. Go for it.

mklanch · 27/11/2020 18:05

we never have turkey...tbh i like turkey but ive never cooked one and have no one to guide me through it. i got scared a few years ago because all those Christmas adverts about the dangers of salmonella lol
we normally either do a roast beef and a roast chicken or roast chicken and a slow cooked lamb. works out just fine for us and its just as special and yummy!!

raspberryk · 27/11/2020 18:05

I never cook turkey, the only time I have ever enjoyed it was a turkey crown covered in bacon and cooked by a chef friend!
We usually go with a wing rib of sirloin or a fore rib, much much nicer IMO!

LostAcre · 27/11/2020 18:05

Just cook whichever meat you want to!

We never have turkey as DH doesn’t like it and I can take it or leave it. We’ll be having either beef or lamb this year. Haven’t decided which yet.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/11/2020 18:10

Chickens nicer anyway. I don’t like it that much dh does.

CottonSock · 27/11/2020 18:12

We are having a meal we all enjoy, so giant yorkies with sausages or a stuffing roll and the trimmings.

Chailatte20 · 27/11/2020 18:13

Getting an organic free range chicken, it's so much nicer than turkey.

CottonSock · 27/11/2020 18:13

We often do chicken though, esp if staying in a holiday cottage.

FizzyPink · 27/11/2020 18:13

I bloody hate Turkey. I’d love beef instead but my parents would only cook it to absolute death if I requested it

Scarby9 · 27/11/2020 18:13

Last year there were just three of us and the available turkeys were far too big, even though we do love leftovers.
Got a chicken instead and much preferred it
Go with the chicken.

haba · 27/11/2020 18:22

We never have turkey. We only buy organic meat, but a turkey at Christmas is £60-70 to feed just five...so I can't justify that. (Could have two or three really nice meals for that price)
We usually have lamb (my choice) or chicken (children's). DH is happy with whatever is there.

IntermittentParps · 27/11/2020 18:24

I never understand this turkey thing. Most people don't seem to like it that much but cook it anyway Confused
It's often just me and DP and we worked out years ago the best and only thing to do is roast a massive chicken on Xmas Eve to have hot with roast potatoes etc. We eat the leftovers on Xmas Day so we don't have to bother cooking. We get in bread, pickles, cheese, salad etc to go with it. It's my dream food.
I've even been known to do Xmas dinner for family (who are quite conservative about Xmas food) that was a roast chicken and no one revolted.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 27/11/2020 18:27

We always had chicken when I was growing up, as no one liked turkey and there were only ever 3 or 4 of us. These days I cook beef for Christmas Dinner.

SkepticalCat · 27/11/2020 18:30

Aldi are doing a luxury free range cockerel this Christmas (they have possibly sold them in previous years, but I've not noticed), which I'm tempted by.

AnotherMumma · 27/11/2020 18:48

We did this and just splashed out on an organic farm reared free spirited top of the class chicken! You could taste the difference!

AnnieKenneyfanclub · 27/11/2020 18:52

@LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett ooh thanks for mentioning Guinea Fowl! I was thinking of a chicken as only DS and me eat a bird. But guinea fowl is even better!

pinkbalconyrailing · 27/11/2020 18:53

yanbu
we usually have goose but the farmer we usually get it from (organic free range) had a visit from a fox Sad
one large chicken will do the 5 of us nicely for one meal.

Bagadverts · 27/11/2020 19:02

Do what you want.

Are all three of you going the next day for Christmas dinner? If your mum is not would she be disappointed if it was not turkey? If she would is it enough for her to help you cooking?

CheesePleaseLoueese · 27/11/2020 19:09

Yep we're doing a chicken. And beef the day after!

DryRoastPeanut · 27/11/2020 19:09

Cook what you and your family like to eat. You don’t need anyone’s permission to cook a chicken on Christmas Day.

Pebbledashery · 27/11/2020 19:10

I can't think of nothing worse then dry turkey on xmas day! no matter how well it's cooked, it's the association that goes with it.
Definitely will be with the chicken gang this year and every year for the past 30 something years we've had chicken!! no turkey has passed through the front door of my house!

CoronaIsWatching · 27/11/2020 19:11

I wouldn't. Chicken just isn't special as most meat eaters have it every other day of their lives. What about duck, goose, beef wellington etc

waltzeswithsnobs · 27/11/2020 19:13

Do it. Chicken is nicer than turkey.

Steezy · 27/11/2020 19:31

I'm having chicken. We don't like turkey.
Although I've be called 'sad' for doing turkey! Hmm
