Not to mourn the end of Top Shop if it happens

Sympathy for staff and the loss of any jobs. However, Philip Green is a very nasty person and I will shed no tears for him. Indeed if I ever had ten minutes with Prince Albert of Monaco, I would suggest to him that banishing Mr Green from Monaco would be the best thing he could ever do.

Has someone said they're closing?

CapGunAmmo · 27/11/2020 12:53

Yep Philip green is a bastard. I also would feel for the staff but not for him though I dare say the loss won’t impact on his life on his yacht and swanning around Monte Carlo at all. He is loathesome.

SoupDragon · 27/11/2020 12:53

Yes, Arcadia Group is on the very brink of collapse.

SoupDragon · 27/11/2020 12:54

I will mourn the end of Top Shop - I remember heading up to the huge store at Oxford Circus as a teen. Happy days!

tectonicplates · 27/11/2020 12:54

Does that mean other shops like Dorothy Perkins, Wallis etc would also go?

GreyishDays · 27/11/2020 12:55

I wonder how Topshop are doing though. Someone might buy just them out.

nosswith · 27/11/2020 12:55

@tectonicplates if no-one buys them, then yes.

I'd mourn Dorothy Perkins, their jeans are the best I've found. In fact when I read they were on the brink the first thing I did was go and order several pairs to stock up.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 27/11/2020 12:57

I don't know how anyone can celebrate a business going bust no matter how they dislike the CEO or whatever. All those staff with no jobs - it's tragic. This whole situation is terrible for people's livelihoods.

Echobelly · 27/11/2020 12:59

The trouble is that people like Philip Green always walk away relatively unscathed (and still with ££££ in the bank) while their staff suffer.

tectonicplates · 27/11/2020 13:01

I think the Oxford Circus shop would need saving somehow, even if all the others closed. It's quite a unique shop really.

bettybyebye · 27/11/2020 13:03

I had the pleasure of working at Arcadia group head office for a couple of years about 10 years ago. The way he operated was awful. He’s just bought BHS when I started it and just ran it into the ground. Feel terrible for all the staff though

JacobReesMogadishu · 27/11/2020 13:09

Will Philip green care that much? He’s still going to be loaded isn’t he?

Hayeahnobut · 27/11/2020 13:09

Green's financial affairs are arranged so that any business collapse will barely touch him and his family's wealth. As ever it's the workers that will suffer.

We need one almighty shake up of businesses and the people who are allowed to run them. Legitimised corruption.

1moreglassplease · 27/11/2020 13:15

Hayeahnobut - absolutely spot on. Everything is in his wife's name so they'll be fine. The 15,000 people who could lose their livelihoods? Not so much.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 27/11/2020 13:16

Boohoo are after Topshop.

The trouble is all these brands is they have lost touch with the market. They were all struggling pre lockdown.

The likes of H and M, Cos, Monki, Uniqlo Zara are producing what people want. I don’t see much difference between DP/Wallis and Primark, except Primark is cheaper.

I do see a big difference between Uniqlo, Zara and the H and M brands. Dp and Wallis are aiming at Primark. But Primark do it better and cheaper.

the80sweregreat · 27/11/2020 13:16

Those poor staff : they will be the ones shafted by him ( again) whilst they have to try to find another job or claim UC in order to eat. Not easy at all. So many people affected by this.
He'll be ok on his yacht no doubt.
It's so sad that these iconic stores are all closing down :(
Maybe someone might buy them up?

BlueThistles · 27/11/2020 13:17

Prince Albert of Monaco is also a Knob OP

GreenlandTheMovie · 27/11/2020 13:19

Are you kidding? They sell the best (Moto) jeans! Where will I get them now?

Although in my imagination, I'm linking their likely demise with the trend towards non ripped jeans. While the latter mean you buy many pairs for the variety, unripped jeans are so uniform - -and boring-- you would only want to buy one pair.

Port1aCastis · 27/11/2020 13:20

Oh lord all those people losing their jobs
Just awful!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 27/11/2020 13:21

I read 15000 people will lose their jobs😥

backaftera2yearbreak · 27/11/2020 13:22

I used to work for Arcadia. Must buy your own uniform with a 60% discount to show off latest collection. 25% staff discount if you wanted stuff for personal use but only given on a store card type equivalent with a high interest rate. Awful.

foxyknoxy30 · 27/11/2020 13:22

Him and that prick who owns sports direct as well

tectonicplates · 27/11/2020 13:25

The likes of H and M, Cos, Monki, Uniqlo Zara are producing what people want. I don’t see much difference between DP/Wallis and Primark, except Primark is cheaper.

Only if you're of average height. The difference is that Topshop, Dorothy Perkins and Wallis all make petite and tall ranges. If Arcadia closed down, it would be an absolute disaster for petite and tall women.

H&M and Zara are terrible shops for petite women, especially Zara. All their tops look like tunics. Same with Primark.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 27/11/2020 13:25

Topshop used to be my favourite shop - the clothes were cooler than equivalently priced shops such as Zara and Warehouse, with better fabrics and fit than those. That was at least ten years ago. Now they’ve cheapened the fabric and cut, and the style isn’t as modern as Zara or some of H&M but it’s still more expensive than them even though they’re now using polyester for everything. I used to spend a day wandering round all the shops and going back to Topshop as it had the nicest version of whatever I was looking for, but not now. The website is awful too - cheap and tacky and really crap photography.
