Jacket potatoes

POtatoPAtato1 · 24/11/2020 19:39

Having a jacket potato tonight and was going to put something else with it, THEN started wondering whether the jacket potato itself should be the main part of the meal.

I have them as sides if small, cut open, cheese melted in and grilled and sometimes as a main if I have cheese and beans.

So, is a jacket potato a side or a main?

Yabu - of course the jacket is the main, who could possibly eat anything else for a week after.
Yanbu - give me all the dinner with a jacket, corn on the cob AND onion rings.

Depends how big the potato is, and how hungry you are. Yesterday I had a medium sized potato with some carrots and some cauliflower cheese. I think by size the cauliflower cheese was the main thing, but if it had been a bigger potato I would have needed less of it.

formerbabe · 24/11/2020 19:41

It's both

Jacket potato with nice filling is a meal but lunch rather than dinner

A smaller jacket potato with just some butter is a side dish to go with dinner

PurpleDaisies · 24/11/2020 19:44

I agree it can be either depending on what it’s with and how big the potato is.

I usually have a jacket with beans, chilli or coleslaw. It’s the main in all those things.

Newjobnewslob · 24/11/2020 19:44

It can be either.

Two potatoes with beans and cheese makes an excellent main. Splash of tabasco if you're that was inclined; I am.

One potato is perfect as a side with Sausages, Kiev, chilli, and salad etc

It's like bread - use as much or as little as required and with whatever size protein you want in the day.

I used to have a cheeky microwave potato with an onion, chopped them also microwaved with some butter. A sprinkle of cheese and it becomes the perfect snack

Mmmmmmmmmmm

When I'm trying to diet I eat it with beans or whatever and some salad ,I like the frozen McCain ones Blush

Nottherealslimshady · 24/11/2020 19:45

Normal size jacket potato with beans and cheese (and salad for me) is our proper dinner here.
A small potato with butter would be a side but a crap one.

We had chilli on jacket potato potato other day, very filling meal!

ilikebooksandplants · 24/11/2020 19:48

I eat a lot, and choose big potatoes, loads of cheese - I think they’re a full meal. They make me feel quite full.

What about your man from that band who ate so many he ran over himself?

Punkatheart · 24/11/2020 19:52

I love baked potatoes - hummus, cheese and beans - yum. Or curry, or a bean salad....

I think they can be both but ilike, they should be big buggers.

One tip - bake 'em with olive oil and salt over 'em - more crunchier.

youkiddingme · 24/11/2020 19:53

It's whatever you want it to be. Ban the food police from your head. I often have soup or salad for breakfast, porridge as a main meal, sweet food before savoury. Generally eat healthily and try and get a nutritional balance overall but other than that no rules.

ForTheLoveOfCatFood · 24/11/2020 20:01

To many variables to answer this question correctly with you options because I don’t know the size of the potato in question...

A larger potato would be a main but with some sides

A smaller one a side to a main

HTH

ForTheLoveOfCatFood · 24/11/2020 20:02

I also feel jacket potatoes are very underrated Grin

Hardbackwriter · 24/11/2020 20:07

God, I love a jacket potato. I once described a jacket potato with cheese and a salad as 'the king of lunches' to DH and now that's what it's known as in our house.

As others have said, a jacket potato can be either the main or a side, depending on whether it has fillings and the size of it. I would have a small one as a side in pretty much any situation where new potatoes would also be an acceptable side. A plain jacket potato would not be a substitute for mash or roast potatoes. And thus I have ruled.

KittenCalledBob · 24/11/2020 20:08

Could be either. Love a jacket potato with tuna / coronation chicken / cheese and beans. But could also have a small jacket as a side (instead of mash).

Scarlettpixie · 24/11/2020 20:09

It can be either.

Indoctro · 24/11/2020 20:13

It's a main here

We had baked tatties with tuna Mayo and sweetcorn and salad on the side as our dinner tonight

Mrsjayy · 24/11/2020 20:13

Bit of both really i buy bigger potatoes if I'm having it as a main I love baked potatoes.

ohtheholidays · 24/11/2020 20:22

We'll have a small jacket potato as a side sometimes if were having steak(I love them with soured cream and fresh chives in)or with beefburgers .

Huge jackpotatoes (which we seem to struggle to find just lately)would be a meal loaded up with cheese and beans or cheese and homemade coleslaw or chilli topped with some sour cream and and a sprinkle of cheese with a salad on the side.

RolandSchitt · 24/11/2020 20:24

Both.

If I have one the size of my face, it's a main. If it's a wee one, it's an accompaniment to a main.

Mrsjayy · 24/11/2020 20:27

I bought large baking potatoes in morrisons last week ohtheholidays

Lilliarna · 24/11/2020 20:35

I had it as a side.
It was tiny.
200g.

Notanothernamechanged101 · 24/11/2020 20:36

Depends on a) size of the spud b) how hungry I am c) what we planned to cook d) how knackered I am.

Small (or half) jacket with meat &veg generally but if feeling lazy / knackered I will have a slightly bigger jacket with beans & cheese. Reminds me of my student days.

IsAnybodyListening · 24/11/2020 20:37

I am a bit of a Jacket Spud Hoe. Love 'em. For me these are my go-to recipes.

Jacket Pot with Garlic Butter and Cheese. Steak, Green Beans. Mushrooms cooked into Peppercorn sauce and poured all over.

Jacket Pot with Garlic Butter and Cheese. Hot and Spicy Chicken and Sweetcorn.

Or

A good few smaller spuds cooked in a tray. When cooked, open up and top with chilli con carne, Then top with cheese, bake again till cheese has melted. Serve with dips, onion rings and salad.

CosyQueen · 24/11/2020 20:40

It’s both but I would only have it as a main (my top filling choices are either cheese and coleslaw or leftover campfire stew and cheese)

Housewoes23 · 24/11/2020 20:41

If I order a burger and chips in a pub I often swap the chips for a baked potato. Is that odd? Probably.
I'll have one large one or two smaller ones with toppings as a main one.

earthyfire · 24/11/2020 20:50

Both. Tonight I had a small jacket with steak, broccoli and mushrooms. The steak was my main meal I'd say.
