Jacket potatoes

Having a jacket potato tonight and was going to put something else with it, THEN started wondering whether the jacket potato itself should be the main part of the meal.

I have them as sides if small, cut open, cheese melted in and grilled and sometimes as a main if I have cheese and beans.

So, is a jacket potato a side or a main?

Yabu - of course the jacket is the main, who could possibly eat anything else for a week after.
Yanbu - give me all the dinner with a jacket, corn on the cob AND onion rings.

I had one with Thai green curry poured over the top instead of rice. It was delicious!

I have one and enjoy butter, or with cheese or sweet corn.

I love baked potatoes so for me they are always the main event. I eat a good amount tbough, with lashings of topping (beans and vegan butter& cheese or hummous, seeds sprinkled on top).

I think a baked potato can be either depending on topping, size, how many you have and how hungry you are.

I think it’s so funny that people on here call them jacket potatoes, I had never heard that before and it gives me a mental image of a potato wearing a jacket Smile

We had baked tatties with tuna Mayo and sweetcorn and salad on the side as our dinner tonight

Us too!!

Its because its 'potatoes in their jackets'

For me a Jacket potato is a disappointing side- reminiscent of 'trying to stay on plan' meals out in restaurants where I've denied myself chips which I would infinitely prefer.
I always have a jacket as a main- love it with tuna mayo and beans. Yum.

If it's a big jacket potato with a proper filling then it's a meal in itself. If it's small with just butter in it then it's a side.

I only ever have jacket potato's on their own, always with butter cheese and beans. Nothing else with it. That's my meal.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 24/11/2020 21:50

We only ever have them as main, stuffed with onions and mushrooms with cheese on top or with cheesy beans. The side is a big salad with all the good pickled stuff from jars!

Baked sweet potato with refried beans and fresh salsa is the Mexican version Grin

If I make a chilli we would have (large) baked potato with chilli and cheese the second night, with a salad. That would be a main meal. We would often have a small baked potato with something like a chicken pie, or a quiche.

Agree with pp re salt and olive oil - blast it in the microwave for five minutes, oil and salt, then 30 minutes in a hot oven.

VestaTilley · 24/11/2020 22:21

Depends if it’s a big one or a small one.

iklboogeymum · 24/11/2020 22:30

Small one as a side, large on with a filling / topping on its own as lunch.

Baked, scooped out, mashed with an egg yolk, cheese, fried bacon & chopped spring onion, loaded back into skins & grilled? The dog's cogs.

I’ve had a jacket potato for dinner specifically due to this thread. It was most definitely the main thing.

Food of kings. Love a baked potato. I like cheese and beans but DH makes them, hollies them out then refills with potato mashed with feta, spring onion and spinach. 😋
