I've just been having a Twitter argument with a man who believes women should not be Priests!

He's added me to his list of "bores", which is fine by me, because I think people like him belong in the past. AIBU?

I'm sure MNers will tell me if I am.

Do you really have to ask if you're being unreasonable?

AryaStarkWolf · 24/11/2020 13:01

I think women should just stop going to a church that views them as second class citizens tbh

Sparklesocks · 24/11/2020 13:03

Dont put so much stock into what randos on the internet say. A good chunk of them are also looking for a reaction or attention so will say anything mildly provocative or offensive to stir up responses.
He’s just one person.

I agree. Attendance in many places of worship would plummet!
WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 24/11/2020 13:07

Also agree

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 24/11/2020 13:21

Agree with you OP. Ignore him. My friends the lesbian Reverend of our local church. She is married and they have adopted 3 kids. I don't even believe in god but we are still friends.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 24/11/2020 13:22

Both the clergy at my church are women. And they're absolutely great Smile

Summerstorms · 24/11/2020 13:24

I agree.

That and all the things that keep a church running would grind to a halt!

Karatema · 24/11/2020 14:38

Thank you all. I was beginning to doubt myself because several Catholic institutes on Twitter "liked" his tweet!.

You are correct in your very good point that churches would grind to a halt without females, whatever their role.

I now know why several friends classify themselves as "lapsed" Catholics.

Lol, well of course they did. That's pretty standard of them, in my experience.

As soon as I read the title of this thread, I thought of Father Ted Crilly making excuses for Father Jack's outburst!

ViciousJackdaw · 24/11/2020 15:56

Hang on a minute, the entire doctrine of the Catholic church is based around a woman! Jesus wept...

Don't discuss married priests then. I cannot remember the exact figure but I think it's a double figure percentage of Catholic priests that are married!

MerryInthechelseahotel · 24/11/2020 17:31

Can you ask him what you need a penis for? I did this once with a woman who was arguing only men could be priests.

Viviennemary · 24/11/2020 17:57

I dont agree with women priests either. It took other denominations long enough to finally give in and agree to female clergy. I'm glad the Catholic church has held out so far.

Whiskyinajar · 24/11/2020 18:02

There are Catholic priests who would disagree with you Viviene. At least two I know personally who think the Catholic Church only hold out as they have backed themselves into a corner over it all. They belive the time will come when priests in the Catholic Church will be either men or women.
Might not be for decades but they are certain it will come

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 24/11/2020 18:02

It's a theological issue and lots of churches hold this position.

I'm an atheist, I dont care what they do, but i think its outside of normal equality issues. Religion by it's very nature, isn't logical.

florascotia2 · 24/11/2020 18:04

But surely some of the very first Christian 'ministers' (in the sense of believers dedicated to helping other believers ) were women?

And remember, until Gregorian reorganisations of the Western Church around AD 1000, most priests could be - and were - married.

Summerstorms · 24/11/2020 18:05

@Viviennemary
Why?

2tired2bewitty · 24/11/2020 18:06

A depressing number of our CofE congregation turned out to hold this view when we were writing the advert for a new vicar recently Sad

MissConductUS · 24/11/2020 18:06

This is one of the many reasons I left the RCC decades ago. Both of the priests in my church are women and we have women bishops as well.

do you remember when women couldn't get into Golf clubs 🙄

Tell him that it's a later change after the Council of Nicea. Men wanted to ensure control. There were women priests in the Bible, such as Joanna and Susannah. Check it out, Viviennemary!
