Women Priests

I've just been having a Twitter argument with a man who believes women should not be Priests!

He's added me to his list of "bores", which is fine by me, because I think people like him belong in the past. AIBU?

I'm sure MNers will tell me if I am.

@Viviennemary me too. I don't have any issue with them in other denominations, and know they do great work. but really don't want them in the RC church. And I can't even give a good reason why not!

Brefugee · 24/11/2020 18:25

I dont agree with women priests either. It took other denominations long enough to finally give in and agree to female clergy. I'm glad the Catholic church has held out so far.

Why?

Maireas · 24/11/2020 18:27

@Toddlerteaplease - can they not be trusted with the sacraments? Would they wear the wrong vestments?

FuzzyPuffling · 24/11/2020 18:27

Jesus said "In Christ there is no male and female..."
QED.

Actually, there are more women in training to be priests than men these days (C of E). Hurrah.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 24/11/2020 18:29

I can't even give a good reason why not!

Surely that should tell you something Toddlertea

Their Uteruses might fall out.

Maireas · 24/11/2020 18:36

😂 😂 😂 Their boobs would get in the way of the candles!

june2007 · 24/11/2020 18:38

I def am for women priests but no Christians on both sides of the arquement including women. The women who are against do not feel second class. But I think the bible is for it. (Pheobe a deacon, Anna a profetess, Junia an appostle suggest so.. Paul we all know not so keen on women.)

BlueThistles · 24/11/2020 19:17

give me ALL woman in the Priesthood 🌺

A C of E woman priest I know was told in all seriousness that one of the reasons women couldn't be priests was because many churches don't have loos and women couldn't just nip behind a tree in the churchyard the way a man can....

Maireas · 24/11/2020 19:25

Ah, reason enough! Although the mind boggles as to the number of vicars urinating in churchyards....

PurBal · 24/11/2020 19:25

My brother doesn't believe women should be priests. He's a dick.

Birdsandbeez · 24/11/2020 19:27

To be honest I think all priests either male or female belong in the past.

It's worrying that in the 21st century a lot of grown adults believe in this religious nonsense.

SarahAndQuack · 24/11/2020 19:34

I think there is no point having this argument with people you don't know on twitter. You're never going to convince someone in the length of a tweet. Might as well disagree quickly then block, IMO.

PumpkinCheater · 24/11/2020 19:34

Fewer and fewer people will be happy to go to a church that allows only men to be priests. Churches struggle to get bums on seats at the best of times.

Fewer and fewer men actually want to be priests. As a pp said, most trainee C of E vicars are actually female now.

Younger people are much more likely to believe that women should be able to be priests. The male-only priesthood idea is quite literally dying out as its proponents gradually kick the bucket.

I don't give much for the future of all-male priesthood, to be honest.

BlueThistles · 24/11/2020 19:46

🤣 this made me laugh out loud 😂

donquixotedelamancha · 24/11/2020 20:25

@florascotia2

But surely some of the very first Christian 'ministers' (in the sense of believers dedicated to helping other believers ) were women?

]]

And remember, until Gregorian reorganisations of the Western Church around AD 1000, most priests could be - and were - married.

Two different issues. The getting married thing is just a discipline, it could be changed tomorrow. There are some married RC (generally converts) priests without any difficulty.

The women priests issue is harder coz it's doctrine though, as PP's link suggests, I think it's got a much weaker theological basis than core doctrine.

There are independent Catholic churches with women Priests and Bishops, including apostolic succession.

donquixotedelamancha · 24/11/2020 20:31

To be honest I think all priests either male or female belong in the past.

Bit weird, they definitely still exist, I've seen 'em. Or did you mean it as a euphemism like 'they should sleep with the fishes'?

I don't like football but I acknowledge it's importance to others and I don't think footballers shouldn't exist.

I meant they are an outdated institution in modern society.

Religion may have had it's place 2000yrs ago to attempt to explain the unknown but in a modern world its little more than guys in dresses and pointy hats believing in fairy tales.

BlackForestCake · 24/11/2020 20:52

The Catholic Church (at least in this country) is desperately short of priests. They will adapt or die, I guess.

FuzzyPuffling · 24/11/2020 20:52

And football is a load of blokes in ponytails kicking a bag of wind round a field!

You can reduce anything to the ridiculous if you try. But you might offend someone.

We had Science for that 2000 years ago, I don't think the purpose is any less relevant now. Religions are about explaining the why rather than the what.

I don't personally see a need for that either but we're in a small minority as humans go. Doesn't worry me if people want that- I'd rather they went for RC than most other available options.

I'm a sucker for a hard magic system so I pay vague interest to the rules, much as I do with other hobbies I don't partake of- like D and D or Warhammer.

Oh Allah, you are right. I don't think anyone would appreciate an offensive post on AIBU, better be careful.

donquixotedelamancha · 24/11/2020 21:00

The Catholic Church (at least in this country) is desperately short of priests.

Which is odd, because they've got loads. You hardly ever see a mass without at least one.
The Quakers and the Baptists hardly have any but will the Catholics share?
