To ask DP to stop farting on the new sofa?

Not the most pleasant topic but our last sofa was really stinky where my DP sat (same spot all the time). Every time he sat down there’s be a woosh of stale fart/cabbage smell & I could smell it at other times too. I hate it! I’m pregnant as well so I can smell everything even more now!

The new sofa is starting to go the same way I’ve asked him to stop farting on the sofa & to plump up the cushion & flip it occasionally but he’s not too happy about this! 😁

Anyone else have the same issue? Any ideas too for how to combat this? The sofa has been treated with anti stain stuff so I don’t think we’re meant to wipe it down. I also tried febreeze sprays on the last sofa but it didn’t cut it.

But let's be honest, farts smell bad

But they don’t leave permanent smells around the house for goodness sake!!! If every time we farted they remained our houses would all stink. The fact he is leaving permanent smells on furniture indicates to me an actual bowel issue, and not just normal gas which dissipates in the air. Sounds like he is leaving actual poo particles on the sofa which is not “normal farting”.

oakleaffy · 23/11/2020 19:45

@SchadenfreudePersonified

Tbh DP doesn't fart in front of me

Nor does my DH - he goes into the toilet.

(I often expect to find him stuck on the ceiling, like a balloon . . . Grin)

Lol!

If anyone has ever had a colonoscopy...the air they blast up the arris comes out....but no odour as no ''stool''
It's the poo the wind bypasses that makes farts so hideous.

MyMajesty · 23/11/2020 19:45

@Nottherealslimshady

Can you wrap the cushion under the cover in plastic (like a bin bag) then just wash the cushion cover regularly?
Get him to remove the cover and wash it regularly, you mean.

Or, if the cover doesn't come off, a throw or seat pad which he washes regularly.

Oh dear between me and DP I am the windy one! BlushGrin

My husbands spot on the sofa has a folded single duvet on it which I was the cover weekly and duvet itself 6 monthly - I am constantly on the ball with me him performing sniff tests on his pyjamas/trousers to make sure his sweaty gooch smell hasn’t penetrated to the duvet - and Febreze..... lots of febreze

NeonIcedcoffee · 23/11/2020 19:46

If he's farting so. Much to make the sofa smell or they're smelly enough to do that then he needs help. Or does he sit on the sofa 116 hours a day?!

Laufeythejust · 23/11/2020 19:46

This thread has really tickled me. Reminds me of when my gran got a new sofa- she once made me take my jeans off to sit down because she was worried my old black jeans would dye the cream leather. Think she would have fainted if someone farted on it 😂

ivfbabymomma1 · 23/11/2020 19:47

Staining the fabric with a smell?! Is that even a thing omg that's vile! 😂

This reminds me of when I was cabin crew. After a flight when we had to do a quick check of the cabin, quite often you’d rest you knee on the seat to bend and get something by the window/on the floor. The smells that would come from the seats were revolting 🤢

Quietlyloud · 23/11/2020 19:48

Wash your damn sofa then. Use a throw fs. I’ve never limited farting on the sofa and it doesn’t stink at all. Growing up my mums husband would sit with no top on sweating and it stunk but again, because the dirty bastards didn’t wash it.

DrCoconut · 23/11/2020 19:48

Really bad wind can be a sign of a medical
Issue. My bowel habits became very unpleasant and I'm going for an endoscopy next week as my GP thinks I have coeliac disease based on symptoms and a blood test. Maybe he needs a check up if it's got that bad.

Oh God , this has cheered up my evening. I'm in bloody stitches. Actually I was going to post a thread asking if anyone has ever washed loose faux velvet sofa covers in a machine before , or what the best way to clean them is , although the label says 'professional cleaning only'. No stinky arse smells on there , just need a clean and a freshen - up . Any advice greatly received.

Ps good luck if he likes sprouts , Christmas is coming . The stench will be vile.

But it can’t be a fart alone which is staining the sofa. Farts are gas! He must actually be touching cloth if he’s leaving stains...

Staffy1 · 23/11/2020 19:52

I wonder if an antibacterial spray would work. It's the bacteria that smells, so it might.

Exactly! Which is why I don’t agree with everyone saying “it’s normal”. It’s not normal to be leaving stench and stains around the house!!
Staffy1 · 23/11/2020 19:53

I don't think the OP mentioned staining, just stench?

MostDisputesDieAndNoOneShoots · 23/11/2020 19:53

I lived with a very flatulent father and it is a running joke what a stinky girl he is .... no one has ever complained about the sofa smelling as a result however, so I guess he’s not as bad as we all thought 🤷🏼‍♀️ Thanks for giving me a good laugh OP. I have no suggestions, but this is gold.

ShalomToYouJackie · 23/11/2020 19:57

I have the same problem with my DP, I'm pregnant and when my sense of smell was strong in the first trimester I couldn't sit near him or lie down on the sofa.

Febreeze fabric refresher spray does the trick

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 23/11/2020 19:57

Put a throw on the sofa?

giantangryrooster · 23/11/2020 19:57

You are all going about it wrong Grin. Ancient (and bad advice for puppies but might work in this case).

Every time he farts you simply rub his nose in the fabric, then you place a newspaper on his seat and when he is accustomed to farting on the paper, you start moving it little by little towards the loo. Training is what is needed and patience Smile.

(Am I the only one getting fart auto-corrected to dart all the time?)

GarlicSoup · 23/11/2020 20:00

@ilovesooty

Put some puppy pads down for him to fart on.

Peppafrig · 23/11/2020 20:02

This is hilarious 😂

SilverStarburst · 23/11/2020 20:04

OP, you are definitely not being unreasonable, but I have had a terrible day (sick parent, out of work son, grumpy husband, shit work and my increasingly bad depression) BUT, you made the corners of my mouth slightly twitch upwards - thank you.

Only advice is to confine DP to a different room or to buy him those special pants that suck up the bad smell!!
