To ask DP to stop farting on the new sofa?

Foundmy · 23/11/2020 17:53

Not the most pleasant topic but our last sofa was really stinky where my DP sat (same spot all the time). Every time he sat down there’s be a woosh of stale fart/cabbage smell & I could smell it at other times too. I hate it! I’m pregnant as well so I can smell everything even more now!

The new sofa is starting to go the same way I’ve asked him to stop farting on the sofa & to plump up the cushion & flip it occasionally but he’s not too happy about this! 😁

Anyone else have the same issue? Any ideas too for how to combat this? The sofa has been treated with anti stain stuff so I don’t think we’re meant to wipe it down. I also tried febreeze sprays on the last sofa but it didn’t cut it.

There is this thing called a toilet. Where you can fart. Does your DP need directions?

Hellomynameismary · 23/11/2020 19:17

@HopeAndDriftWood

What does he eat that makes his farts embed in the sofa?!

That is foul.

I wondered that

Farting on the sofa is what dogs do....maybe your man needs a kennel Grin

Even Jim Royle would announce that he was off for an Eartha Kitt.
Peppafrig · 23/11/2020 19:18

Can he not just lift a bum cheek to fart as to spare the fabric .

RealBecca · 23/11/2020 19:18

Get a throw and wash it regularly

Peppafrig · 23/11/2020 19:18

@nosswith you go to the bathroom to fart in your own house?

Nottherealslimshady · 23/11/2020 19:19

Can you wrap the cushion under the cover in plastic (like a bin bag) then just wash the cushion cover regularly?

Thewiseoneincognito · 23/11/2020 19:24

How grotesque

Russellbrandshair · 23/11/2020 19:26

Farts are natural

Occasional farts are “natural”- farting so much you leave actual stench on furniture is most definitely not “natural”. My family farts sometimes but none of our sofas smell like rotten cabbage. I really worry for the state of people’s bowels if they think leaving long lasting smells around the house is “natural” because it most definitely isn’t. It shows your bowels aren’t working properly!!!

AllTheGuac · 23/11/2020 19:26

@TheQueef

Sounds like he needs to wash his arse better.
This too. My OH is like this and I have to put down towels on the sofas sometimes and tell him to change his trousers/pyjama bottoms because they stink. It's a combination of washing improperly due to some physical limitations and plain laziness in not changing some clothes as much as he should.

It's been giving me the ick lately and has been a major turn off amongst other annoying habits. He didn't use to stink this much and his diet along with weight has been the rising cause of this. It's frustrating because I love him but it's weirding me out. It's been making me contemplate being single again. 😔

Bahhhhhumbug · 23/11/2020 19:26

Vile - and you have sex with him, bleugh hope you stay at the headboard end it's either a deliberate thing meaning lack of any respect for you or its a clinical reason for which he chooses not to seek any treatment or change his diet.... which also means a lack of any respect for you.

Eckhart · 23/11/2020 19:27

@LemonPeonies

Farting is natural

So are periods, but I bet he'd have something to say if OP was leaving blood all over the house.

This is weird. Do you seriously go to the bathroom every time you have to fart in your own house? Unclench. No pun intended.
SoulofanAggron · 23/11/2020 19:31

It's not his body odour- if it smells like his farts then it's his farts.

I've never heard of this- someone permanently fart-saturating the sofa etc.

There's something wrong with him, surely, or there must be some way he can improve.

PP's have mentioned most suggestions on the NHS site www.nhs.uk/conditions/flatulence/

This is quite disgusting really. Sad Sad Sad

Suzi888 · 23/11/2020 19:34

Leather sofa?
Or a very thick and washable throw. Yuck! Sad

PanamaPattie · 23/11/2020 19:35

DH goes to the loo to fart - which is rare as he doesn't eat fast food and has a healthy diet. Anyone that farts so much that it leaves a fug in fabric needs to see a doctor and overhaul their eating habits. 🤢

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/11/2020 19:39

Tbh DP doesn't fart in front of me

Nor does my DH - he goes into the toilet.

(I often expect to find him stuck on the ceiling, like a balloon . . . Grin)

thepeopleversuswork · 23/11/2020 19:39

I'm always a bit Hmm when people troop on to insist that smelly farts are purely down to poor diet.

I mean yes I get that a diet of daily meat curry washed down with lager is not going to power the nicest-smelling emissions.

But let's be honest, farts smell bad. You can take the edge off a bit but there's no getting away rom this and you can't purify them to the point where they smell good.

And before a vegan tells me I'm wrong I've lived with loads of veggies and vegans and their farts were possibly even worse than the hard-core carnivores.

He must be farting all the time though, for it to be so... potent.

Perhaps he should just sit on the toilet instead of the sofa in the evenings?

foxyroxyyy · 23/11/2020 19:41

Try leather couches I guess not fabric ?

minou123 · 23/11/2020 19:41

You could try putting tumble dryer sheets in the covers of the seating.

I put them in my cushion covers, so my cushions smell nice.
Although I don't fart on my cushions.....so im not sure if it will 100% work.

Eng123 · 23/11/2020 19:42

I can't believe this! No it's not breaking wind that will make a sofa smell! Some people break wind more often than others - live with it! My DP stinks from time to time of BO, I've learned to gently suggest a shower- though I still get told off for being insensitive occasionally - point is everybody is their own person and when we marry we accept the good and the bad.

oakleaffy · 23/11/2020 19:42

I'd be filing for divorce.... or be getting the brute a charcoal cushion to sit on. Vile. Go outside to fart.. unless he has a flabby sphincter?

OverThinkingUnderDoing · 23/11/2020 19:43

Could you ask him to start wearing carbon filters in his pants?

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/11/2020 19:43

@Newuser991

Will he allow you to sit on the sofa and risk staining it once you have given birth or will he insist you sit on puppy pads.

Jeez poor man

I put pads under the bed sheet and sat on a towel in the car after giving birth. My DH didn’t need to ask me to do this because I didn’t want to ruin our furniture/car seats.
