To drink a bottle of wine in 2 hours and feel fine....

I know it’s not an AIBU as such but since lockdown I’ve been drinking more than usual, but only on a weekend.

I’ve just supped a bottle of 8.5% wine in 2 hours and I’m a bit tipsy but that’s it! At one point I’d have been slurring my words etc.... but I seem to have become accustomed to it these days.

Again, it’s only twice a week but to think my body is starting to become conditioned to it? When I was younger I used to go out and drink about a bottle of wine before my night out then about 15 shots. That was once a week.

The past 15 years or so I’ve seldom drank since having children except on the occasional night out. Since lockdown I’ve started drink more in the house. It would start with a couple of vodkas and that would be it on a Sat night. Then it would be a couple more etc....

My kids see their dad a lot so it’s only ever when they are with him. I never drink when they are at home. So I have attest 5 night of zero alcohol.

I know a couple of friends have found they are drinking more and one used to drink a bottle of wine per night. 😳😳 I mean I’m a long way off that, that’s for sure!!!! I’d never be able to get up!

But my threshold is definitely increasing. I can’t be the only one??

I absolutely don’t think I have a problem, as I went a month without a drink a few weeks ago but I do think I like a drink 😨

At 8.5% is it even actually wine?

TableFlowerss · 22/11/2020 21:45

Exactly!!!!!!! 😂👍👏🙌 that’s what I was justifying to my partner!!! My kinda thinking! 😂

It's an easy habit to slip into.
Stop it if it troubles you.

ChristmasSlayRide · 22/11/2020 21:46

You sound quite worried. Are you?

8.5% is not high for a wine. I'm blotto after two glasses but it's 12% or nothing here. I have a low tolerance.

I like a drink but can go without easily enough too, so I don't worry.

TableFlowerss · 22/11/2020 21:49

I’ve made a mistake - it’s 11.5% but 8.5 units.

Obviously it’s because I’m so drunk 🥴😂😂

I don't think high tolerance in itself is necessarily an alarming sign. I have a similar tolerance to you but also only drink two nights a week.

It's a problem if it has an impact on your health and your relationships with your loved ones, rather than on the simple basis of counting units. If its troubling you, it is worth cutting down.

But FWIW it doesn't sound out of control to me.

Thank you. I suppose you’ve hit the nail on the head, it’s actually my tolerance. It’s certainly only 2 nights a week, possibly I’d have a glass of wine 3 nights a week, but not always.

OP I find on MN that there is a lot of disapproval of anyone drinking more than a thimble of Sherry at Christmas.
I am 66 and in my circle we all drink a lot more than 2 bottles of wine a week even in normal times !
Obviously if you are concerned then alternate a glass of wine with a glass of water or top wine with soda water but I really don’t think you are overdoing it .

AriesTheRam · 22/11/2020 22:07

Do that after a 13% bad boy then come back and report Grin

MoonBaby1 · 22/11/2020 22:08

NewlyGranny · 22/11/2020 22:13

That is technically a binge and more than a week's worth on one hit. But you know that from reading the bottle. I guess the acid test is whether you can stop at half a bottle and keep the rest for another night. If you can, you're fine.

I heard a good tip the other day from someone who said they never drink if they had a drink yesterday. Alternate alcohol-free days are a good move for healthy relationship with alcohol. Now, if that only worked for food!

overnightangel · 22/11/2020 22:15

Equivalent of 3.5 pints ish of 4% beer twice a week
Move along nothing to see here

Kittykat93 · 22/11/2020 22:23

This is not an issue. I can drink a bottle of 12 percent and not be drunk. I'm not a steaming alcoholic!

Good- I’m pleased to see most of you think it’s fine 🙌

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 22/11/2020 22:29

Most people thought it was fine when it was 8.5%

The fact you are even questioning it shows you may have a problem.
Twice a week is a lot especially if it’s over a longer period.

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 22/11/2020 22:30

Also “steaming alcoholic” and “alcoholic” are different, you can obviously be an alcoholic and not a steaming alcoholic.

reservoircats · 22/11/2020 22:37

Agree with a pp. I think it depends if you can stop and save the rest of what you normally have for another night.

peboh · 22/11/2020 22:41

I have a high tolerance for alcohol, and can drink two bottles of wine with only a slight tipsy feeling but feel totally fine next day. The only time I'd be worried is if you were feeling the need for the alcohol on a more regular basis than what you usually drink.

Iggly · 22/11/2020 22:41

It doesn’t matter if others don’t think it’s an issue.

It is whether you are happy about it or not. And by posting, I’d guess not? As you’re justifying it as ok etc but I wonder deep down if you’re bothered.

If you’re bothered, cut back.

40weekswithno2 · 22/11/2020 22:43

I don't think drinking a bottle of wine 2 nights a week is a problem.
If you're worried then stop for a few weeks to see how you feel.

Onthelowdown · 22/11/2020 22:43

At present I drink around two bottles of wine a week too. It’s usually a glass most evenings and a couple on Friday and Saturday. I can easily go without alcohol but if I don’t have a glass of wine I’m craving something that tastes nice and if I end up with chocolate/cheese/other unhealthy snacks I find that I consume more calories and I’m not satisfied for as long. My test I think would be if I drank something that I didn’t enjoy to get drunk. I love the taste of wine, so I crave it based on that. No aim to get drunk and usually I don’t so I’m not concerned. I think that’s where the problem lies- though I am not an expert.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/11/2020 22:47

I seem to be limited by the length of the straws one gets these days. There seems to be a lot left at the bottom of the bottle that my straw just cannot reach - I must be doing something wrong. Confused

BefuddledPerson · 22/11/2020 22:48

The people who think it is fine drink similar amounts or more, so that's a pretty skewed poll you're running.

Ugzbugz · 22/11/2020 22:48

I can drink a bottle sometimes easily I'm 2 hours and feel not much, others if I'm tired or stressed might feel a bit tipsy.

ZolaGrey · 22/11/2020 22:50

Regardless, 8 paragraphs justifying the whys and wherefores probably mean you're thinking about it more than you would if you didn't care at all...
