To drink a bottle of wine in 2 hours and feel fine....

I know it’s not an AIBU as such but since lockdown I’ve been drinking more than usual, but only on a weekend.

I’ve just supped a bottle of 8.5% wine in 2 hours and I’m a bit tipsy but that’s it! At one point I’d have been slurring my words etc.... but I seem to have become accustomed to it these days.

Again, it’s only twice a week but to think my body is starting to become conditioned to it? When I was younger I used to go out and drink about a bottle of wine before my night out then about 15 shots. That was once a week.

The past 15 years or so I’ve seldom drank since having children except on the occasional night out. Since lockdown I’ve started drink more in the house. It would start with a couple of vodkas and that would be it on a Sat night. Then it would be a couple more etc....

My kids see their dad a lot so it’s only ever when they are with him. I never drink when they are at home. So I have attest 5 night of zero alcohol.

I know a couple of friends have found they are drinking more and one used to drink a bottle of wine per night. 😳😳 I mean I’m a long way off that, that’s for sure!!!! I’d never be able to get up!

But my threshold is definitely increasing. I can’t be the only one??

I absolutely don’t think I have a problem, as I went a month without a drink a few weeks ago but I do think I like a drink 😨

I've found a very good alcohol free prosecco which at the moment gives me alcohol fizz taste and the noise the habit, and I wake up fine!

It's also only 3 99

Artinsurance · 22/11/2020 22:58

I've not a big drinker, and can go for weeks/months happily without drinking - but I've found my tolerance has increased as I've become peri menopausal (as has my propensity for very flushed cheeks whilst imbibing) and I now seem to be incapable of getting tipsy, let alone drunk.

DecentHour · 22/11/2020 23:01

Am in the minority here but I think that 2 bottles a week over 2 nights is quite a lot! It sounds a bit like you are looking to justify and minimise with the ‘it’s only’ language. I would test easing off and seeing if that presents any issues.

Pepperama · 22/11/2020 23:04

Probably worth going easy on it. Maybe try keeping it to half a bottle a couple of times a week. It’s not that you’ve got an big alcohol problem, but that amount is double the safe daily limit and will be pretty hard on your liver and other organs.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 22/11/2020 23:10

I'd possibly drink that with a meal (remember the days of going to restaurants? Grin ) - I have a friend that is generally a two bottles of wine if we go out, but even out with her, I've probably cut down.

It'd have to be a very good wine for me to drink a whole bottle these days - I generally drink at home a lot less than I used to, and probably a couple of glasses max. I drink more if I'm drinking with a meal; quite often open a bottle but don't finish it, or use it up in cooking.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 22/11/2020 23:12

@therubyredshoes - what is it/where from? I had a phase of buying alcohol free wine to drink if I'm driving (and dining) but gave up when I didn't find anything I liked.

Alicatz66 · 22/11/2020 23:26

@EveryDayIsADuvetDay .. I wouldn't bother ! I've been trying out alcohol free wine .. yuk ! 🤮...

Heyahun · 22/11/2020 23:33

Lockdown first time round i was drinking so much - a beer or 2 after work most days, proper drunk most weekends - husband and I got into making cocktails- it was a really fun time! Some Saturdays we had our own little party day - got dressed up, started the day with bloody Mary’s and pretty much drank all day 😂
I didn’t think much of it tbh it was fun; there was fuck all else to do!!

Found out I was pregnant not long after all this and haven’t had a drink since obviously - this lockdown is very different and less exciting then the last - I’m asleep a lot and drinking herbal tea mostly hahah

I think it sounds like a fine amount to be drinking - has someone said something to you about it?

TheRubyRedshoes · 22/11/2020 23:35

It begins with an E from waitrose.

I've also tried alcohol free stuff and it's been undrinkable.

Which, is why, I was thrilled with this one because it does taste good!

TheRubyRedshoes · 22/11/2020 23:39

@EveryDayIsADuvetDay

Eisberg sparkling white wine, waitrose. I 👍 with the reviews, grown up.. Really tastes good

BudgieHammockBananaSmuggler · 22/11/2020 23:50

You’re getting some E from Waitrose? I’m going to the wrong branch...

ShortSilence · 22/11/2020 23:56

Wow. I’m not judging at all (truly) but am thinking I’m really a lightweight. No way could I drink I full bottle of wine on my own, I’d be sick.

I really like the idea of drinking but in practice I peter out and fall asleep very rapidly and, I guess, miss all the fun. Two large glasses is a big night for me.

Alicatz66 · 23/11/2020 09:12

@TheRubyRedshoes ... I might give it a go !

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 23/11/2020 22:52

@TheRubyRedshoes - thanks, I tried that one, not for me.
I switched to drinking kombucha in the end, think I'll stick with that.

veeeeh · 23/11/2020 22:58

Leaving the Puritans and judgy pants people out of it for a moment, sorry folks, 8.5% wine is not wine, it is flavoured water.

Just do what you want, we can't do anything else! Obviously being careful when in charge of young kids.

Enjoy your wine OP. I won't judge you anyway. I bet there are many taking prescription (or otherwise procured) drugs all the way along.

Whatever gets you through the night, is alright. Subject to being able to work and look after kids. Every night is not ok though, but a break out now and then if it is what works for you, is OK in my book.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 23/11/2020 23:13

Shocked at this thread as it sounds like you have an issue. I think I lot of people on here seem to have an issue with alcohol but tell themselves it's normal.. it's not.

VestaTilley · 23/11/2020 23:13

You do have a problem. Nobody should be drinking a bottle of wine in one go- even if they then have a few nights off. Stop before it gets a hold of you.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 23/11/2020 23:13

A lot*

Chamonixshoopshoop · 23/11/2020 23:18

That's not loads, I'd say it's a habit rather than a drinking problem
That being said, try and cut down how much you drink in one go. It's better to drink less than binge.
But to make you feel better, in some countries the recommended drinking for men was 50 units! And when I lived in Spain it was 35 units a week!

TheRubyRedshoes · 23/11/2020 23:40

Everyday that's a shame!
Hopefully you will find something you like, I'm trying the rose version today.

PickAChew · 23/11/2020 23:44

8.5 units is a fair whack. I've had about 6 units, tonight and my ears are ringing. I do drink most nights, so my tolerance isn't low.
