Neighbours flashing lights!

withlotsoflove · 22/11/2020 17:36

Can l have some opinions please.
My neighbours have installed their Christmas flashing light set up again....
It is on the side of their living room window ( OUTSIDE) which is parallel to our bedroom window.
It runs still... then a flashing setting which would put Oxford Street to shame!
Last year it constantly woke me up as it is powerful enough to go through / and under my lined curtains!
When it is still - it isn’t a problem. Flashing lights are though.
AIBU to ask if they can either turn them off overnight or set it so it stays still ( l guess )
😉
Thank u all.

Do they know it’s disturbing you?

AnnaSW1 · 22/11/2020 17:47

To be honest I'd just get cheap blackout linings for your curtains. It's not worth creating aggro.

Blahblahface · 22/11/2020 17:47

Are you my neighbour? We've just put ours up today and they flash in the window. We don't leave them on all night though.

RolandSchitt · 22/11/2020 17:49

Have you mentioned it to them? They probably just don't realise, I'd be mortified if my lights affected neighbours' sleep.

MrsTwitcher · 22/11/2020 17:51

Ask them to turn them off at night. They dont need to be on. Flashing lights can cause fits.

AcornAutumn · 22/11/2020 17:52

Can you see them from inside your place?
Elfieishere · 22/11/2020 17:53

Just get some black out lining.

CoronaIsWatching · 22/11/2020 17:56

I never understand these obnoxious xmas light displays. A few warm white lights in a tree outside looks much more magical and lovely than a blow up glowing snowman and flashing blue lights everywhere that make it look like a police raid

AcornAutumn · 22/11/2020 17:56

@Elfieishere

Just get some black out lining.
Why? Just ask them to sort it.
Sooverthemill · 22/11/2020 17:57

I live in a small square ( 19 houses) all terraced. 2 of our neighbours have left their bloody xmas lights up and flashing at night for 2 YEARS. I hate these people. Especially as we aren't allowed street lamps in the square so we don't spoil the 'ambiance'. I honestly think they shouldn't be allowed. Even at Christmas

withlotsoflove · 22/11/2020 17:57

Thank u for the replies so far.
I haven’t spoken to them yet... that’s my question.
Should l suck it up : or risk pissing them off by asking?
She is reasonable / and he ( on occasion) has been known not to be.
(Different issue with old neighbours),

At night time the ambiance is pure road works! 😂
Plus... l would have thought it’d save money by turning them off.

I must reiterate that the lights are OUTSIDE - not a gentle twinkling from their living room!
They won’t even be enjoying it at 4am!

They can get a timer plug it wont cost them much. Really selfish to have them running through the night. They probably dont realise its disturbing anyone. Definately tell them.

Burnthurst187 · 22/11/2020 18:10

You need to speak to them. Keep it polite and explain the situation, if they refuse come back to us

Audreyseyebrows · 22/11/2020 18:12

They might not know. Ask politely that they are turned off at night.

I really hate outdoor flashing lights.

halcyondays · 22/11/2020 18:13

I don’t think you’d BU to ask them to turn them off at night. It’s a massive waste of electricity keeping them running all night from November. Neighbours that have them here turn them off at night except for a day or two around actual Christmas.

Eye mask?

nosswith · 22/11/2020 18:14

Talk to them. Not unreasonable to have them off at night, say after 11pm.

PucePanther · 22/11/2020 18:16

It’s reasonable to ask them to turn the lights off after 11pm. It’s causing a nuisance. You could offer to purchase a timer plug for them if you want to be extra nice. Blackout blinds do not work, the light still flashes round the edges.

Macncheeseballs · 22/11/2020 18:17

Cut the wire

coconuttyhead · 22/11/2020 18:17

I just don’t understand why some people have the lights going throughout the night?! Apart from being annoying, they’re waiting their own electricity for no reason. The flashing ones should be banned from being on after 11pm for health reasons. I know someone who was so stressed last year through lack of sleep and migraines from them and the neighbours refused to switch them off...even though they were of no use to them being on the outside of their house! That’s not forgetting epilepsy etc. If you want to try and keep the peace, I would go down the line of “your lights are so lovely and I wish i could enjoy them, but unfortunately I get terrible migraines when they flash through the night”.

romeolovedjulliet · 22/11/2020 18:26

love christmas lights but the flashing ones outside are a bit tossy when they upset other people.

Kacee29 · 22/11/2020 18:35

Surely they would turn them off at bed time? Then you could get some sleep. YANBU. It’s Christmas but that would annoy me too. Maybe have a word? They probably haven’t realised!

withlotsoflove · 22/11/2020 18:43

Thank u so much for all your helpful suggestions. I’m going to ask them tomorrow, as it seems that’s what most people have gone with.
Wish me luck! 😉

Don't wait til tomorrow and lose out on any more sleep than you need to.
