Anyone else could happily live on veggies?!

It’s an odd one. I’ll grant you that!

But anyone else really love veggies above any other type of food.
Steamed broccoli
Steamed Brussels sprouts
Courgetti
Carrots etc

I’m underweight but always have been, as is all my family. I don’t have veggies for breakfast (muesli / porridge / scrambled egg that kind of thing), lunch is soup or a chicken salad or a salmon wrap, snacks are fruit and nuts (could happily live off fruit too I think but the sugar stops me!), but come dinner I often cook up a vat of steamed veg and just enjoy ploughing through. So flavourful. I’ll always incorporate something else but only because I have to in order not to lose weight.... something like chickpea curry, salmon fillet and rice etc. But veg is just so delisch!!

Am I alone?
My visiting cousin says.... weirdo! (Fondly I hasten to add!)

Being vegetarian, or even vegan isnt the same as only eating a plate of vegetables though? It's not eating steak or eating a plate of vegetables. Theres huge variation in between.
The vegetarians I know eat pizza, bread, ice cream, indian take always, vegetarian lasagne, chocolate etc as well as fruit and vegetables.

formerbabe · 22/11/2020 17:06

You seem to see red meat is a man food

Quite the opposite hence my posts Confused. It's all the other posters saying they don't eat it but of course their dhs do.

YoniAndGuy · 22/11/2020 17:09

But when have you ever heard a man say how much he loves steamed greens and could live off it. Why is that?

Probably because it would never occur to most normal men who either a. like both or b. prefer meat or c. prefer veg, steamed or otherwise to fling themselves around DECLAIMING that they ADORE x foodstuff BECAUSE I AM A MANLY MAN.

Whereas the kind of dickwads who think that they need to live every second of their lives making sure that everyone around them knows that THEY ARE MEN, ENVELOPED IN CLOUDS OF TESTOSTERONE probably tend to go around saying things like 'HAHA! Steamed veg? Yeah fine as long as it's got a BIG BLEEDING STEAK beside it' or 'Wouldn't fill me up for a second, I'd need a couple of pounds of RED MANLY MAN MEAT to go with that!' etc.

But no one has hinted that they think this

You have attached an association with red meat and a dislike of it as being somewhere pathetic.

This thread was about loving veg. You seem to think this is indicative of us posters wanting to be pathetic and having tiny appetites.

It’s a food. Could be read meat. Could be chocolate. Could be fish.

phoenixrosehere · 22/11/2020 17:10

Just because I don’t enjoy eating meat doesn’t mean I think every other woman doesn’t, seeing as the rest of my entire family eat it. I haven’t been conditioned to think women shouldn’t eat meat. If anything it was that they should.

Agree. I had the same experience growing up. I could eat my weight in green beans but not eating meat had me sitting at a table for hours even though I said I didn’t like it or wanted it in the first place. I could go days without meat, my husband of course couldn’t last 12 hours. I don’t mind meat it’s just not the be all to me that people make it out to be..

Yes exactly...a proper vegan or vegetarian diet is not just a plate of steamed broccoli.

A diet consisting solely of steamed greens is indicative of disordered eating.

Rolopolo2000 · 22/11/2020 17:13

@formerbabe

Who has said they only eat greens??!!

maddiemookins16mum · 22/11/2020 17:14

Nope.

Trut · 22/11/2020 17:14

Some people just love veggies! I always have, even as child. Steamed zucchini with tomatoes was my comfort food as a child. Along with soft boiled eggs. I eat pasta etc when I can’t be bothered to chop veg, but if I had a choice, I would eat veg for every meal (except breakfast which is strictly coffee and peanut butter toast).

It is not about gender stereotypes, it is just what you enjoy eating.

Kakiweewee · 22/11/2020 17:15

My mum quite likes veggies. She'll steam a bunch and have them with some chicken and be happy. Sometimes she can't be bothered cooking and just has them on their own with some grated cheese through them.

But it's not a daily thing. I think I'd have to add in some carbs and protein to feel like it was a meal. Meat or eggs or pulses or fish, with some wholegrain pasta or brown rice. It's probably better for you that way.

Bet your gaff is popular at Christmas!
Bet your guff is popular too... 💨
IRunLikeJoeBiden · 22/11/2020 17:22

Veg has its place in my dietary hierarchy...
Meat
Fruit
Dairy
Carbs
Contents of the hoover bag

Veg

PandemicImpact · 22/11/2020 17:23

No i couldn't live off them because I'm gluttonous but I do really love veg and could have them as a staple.

Massive plate for veg with onion gravy 😋

FippertyGibbett · 22/11/2020 17:27

No, I found that I had to rush to the loo for a poo when I went vegetarian. It all settled down when I went back on meat !

Thank god it wasn’t only me! But sorry you had the same experience. 🙁The funny thing about it (to me anyway) is that my dad doesn’t eat red meat anymore and eats more like I do as he has high blood pressure and high cholesterol and has been told to avoid it. He’ll eat it very occasionally as he does love it, but limits it to special occasions. He’s also read somewhere or other that as you get older it’s more like a poison to the system as your body stops being able to digest it properly or something. My family might be massive meat eaters but they’ve always eaten lots of veg too. His favourite food is actually sprouts. 😁
Justreadingtheforum3 · 22/11/2020 17:30

I feel attacked Grin

I only eat fruit once a month because I don't like it particularly. I thought I'd mention that as a previous person had said people who taste the flavour in vegetables usually don't like sugar. I do find fruit too sweet. I could not be a raw vegan as I don't get on with fruit.

I don't eat steak and neither does my husband. We are both vegans. I am a life long vegetarian and 20 years a vegan.

I'm not a delicate flower either. I'm a sports person. I'm not saying which sport as I'm already outing myself (not famous but I have friends on here).

What a ridiculous response to women who enjoy vegetables.

Icenii · 22/11/2020 17:34

Formerbabe, going down your way of thinking, why is it that women want to portray themselves as delicate little flowers? Why not the other way around? Men wanting to portray themselves as manly brutes who like to sink their teeth into red meat?

I think your projecting in some way. Billions of people on this earth. Or course a portion of these will like veg the most.

formerbabe · 22/11/2020 17:51

It is not about gender stereotypes, it is just what you enjoy eating

There was a thread on here a while ago discussing this issue. Someone had gone to a dinner and men were served red meat and women were served fish or chicken. Apparently this was common years ago...at weddings sometimes women would get a different main to the men. Or imagine you're in a restaurant and there's a table with a man and a woman on it...a steak and a salad are ordered and the waiter automatically assumes the steak is for the man and the salad is for the women. This happens too with beer and wine for example.

Actually to be fair I know what you mean here. I drink IPA and husband G&T without fail when we get our drinks I'm always given the g&t and husband the pint.
Spelunking · 22/11/2020 19:05

I did go to a wedding 3/4 years ago where they had separate meals for men and women. I wasn’t too bothered as I had a veg dish but when it got to my pudding and I got profiteroles instead of a lovely looking chocolate tart I was not impressed.

Spelunking · 22/11/2020 19:09

Also had the same experience in restaurants with pints and wine.

Oooohbehave · 22/11/2020 19:11

No. I like them as an accompaniment to something else and eat them because they’re healthy, but wouldn’t eat them on their own. My DM is like you though. Cold leftover sprouts as a delicious snack anyone? 🤢

True. My dh has white wine and I have red, and usually he is served the red 🍷

My father’s family nickname is Meat and has been since he was a child. My mother didn’t believe you could live off of just veg, carbs, and little meat.

Juanbablo · 22/11/2020 19:13

I love vegetables (except mushrooms Envy) but love them roasted the best.
