Anyone else could happily live on veggies?!

It’s an odd one. I’ll grant you that!

But anyone else really love veggies above any other type of food.
Steamed broccoli
Steamed Brussels sprouts
Courgetti
Carrots etc

I’m underweight but always have been, as is all my family. I don’t have veggies for breakfast (muesli / porridge / scrambled egg that kind of thing), lunch is soup or a chicken salad or a salmon wrap, snacks are fruit and nuts (could happily live off fruit too I think but the sugar stops me!), but come dinner I often cook up a vat of steamed veg and just enjoy ploughing through. So flavourful. I’ll always incorporate something else but only because I have to in order not to lose weight.... something like chickpea curry, salmon fillet and rice etc. But veg is just so delisch!!

Am I alone?
My visiting cousin says.... weirdo! (Fondly I hasten to add!)

Totally agree.
I absolutely adore veggies: steamed ones particularly.
I, too, am underweight but not seriously; just... well, imagine your usual ballet dancer or gymnast.

The trouble is that I detest the word "vegetable".

Ooh! Feel sick even having just typed it.

I find it soooo much easier to use "veggie/s". Or even "veg" (although it's less cute).

Is it because the "table" bit reminds me of, you know, food?

laxxy · 21/11/2020 16:46

because you've said you enjoy healthy vegetables you had an onslaught of negative comments? I do not understand people! I love veggies, absolutely love them! So don't worry about the nasty posts, these are the same posters who then go onto the weight loss chats and moan how overweight they are. Insane and to be honest probably jealous

Why would someone be jealous of others eating loads of vegetables?

I love vegetables but my favourite way to eat them isnt steamed & plain (although I love broccoli like this). I also love vegetables as an accompaniment as opposed to the main dish. Those preferences don't mean I'm overweight.

laxxy · 21/11/2020 16:48

I love brussels sprouts but they are even better with bacon & chestnuts.

DrCoconut · 21/11/2020 16:50

A pack of frozen mixed veg steamed and topped with grated cheese is the food of the gods when the craving strikes.

OrangeIsTheNewTwat · 21/11/2020 16:50

I agree. I could give up meat (am a lapsed vegetarian because I'm lazy & DH is a total carnivore) but I couldn't give up vegetables. I'm not keen on okra or persimmons, but there isn't another vegetable or fruit that I don't like. DH thinks a meal isn't complete without meat; I think it's not complete without at least 2 or 3 types of veg.

Nottherealslimshady · 21/11/2020 16:51

Brussel sprouts are rank but I love most veggies, I'm veggie though so I'd have a problem if I didn't!

Gimmeveg · 21/11/2020 16:52

Remove the cheese and replace with...

Baked beans

And I’m drooling

Vegetarian here and agree. You're probably eating the way we should but people don't like to hear it.

Dilbertian · 21/11/2020 16:53

Chocolate counts as vegetable (OK, fruit) so, yes, I could.

I'm an omnivore, love my meat, fish, eggs, dairy, but absolutely love veg, too. A big pot of veg stew/soup is so satisfying. And salads are like art for the mouth.

People keep commenting "I didn't know you were vegetarian" when I order a vegetarian dish. They can't seem to conceive that someone who loves meat won't necessarily close to eat it at every meal.

If I could only eat one food for the rest of my life, it would be potatoes.

Toilenstripes · 21/11/2020 16:58

I don’t find vegetables “flavourful” at all. As pp wrote, they require a boost to provide flavour.

justlonelystars · 21/11/2020 17:00

I love veggies too. My favourite being roasted butternut squash yum. But could I live off them? No, I need protein and carbs too. And I love chocolate and cheese (and wine before I was pregnant)

MashedSweetSpud · 21/11/2020 17:03

I love veg. Steamed with a little salt and pepper.

Love veg, could live on it. But not steamed in particular. YAB a deeply unadventurous vegan. Buy a cookboook for Xmas.

myhobbyisouting · 21/11/2020 17:15

So basically everything but red meat? That's pretty normal these days isn't it?

formerbabe · 21/11/2020 17:20

Yes but it shouldn't be imo.

Can't bear hearing women say how they don't eat red meat as if it's somehow to manly for them to go near. If anything women need red meat for the iron more than men do.

Backbee · 21/11/2020 17:21

I like stir fryed veg (not neccessarily with sauce) and veg in stuff rather than just a load steamed. I could do veg and a portion of protein for each meal quite easily.

PinkOrchids7 · 21/11/2020 17:22

If you’re not eating enough calories and mainly living off veg then you’re not naturally thin. You’re underweight and if you don’t eat a balanced diet then you might end up with some nasty long term effect. I’m naturally underweight and only eat veg as the side dish.

Mashingthecompost · 21/11/2020 17:22

There are times I don't know what to eat and have realised there's a load of roast veg in the fridge, and just plow through. It was always jack sprat and his wife in my house when I was a kid, I would eat my brother's veg and he would have the meat that I hated. Always loved sweets too though. But I get it, OP. It's only recently that I've kind of realised I don't have to have "breakfast food". As long as I'm eating in a balanced enough way during the week, the order of the meals is irrelevant.

Spelunking · 21/11/2020 17:32

I love vegetables (not so keen on fruit). Sprouts are my favourite but kale is catching up. I find them tasty too. I look at a plate of veggies the way my husband looks at a steak.

Spelunking · 21/11/2020 17:35

I must be doing it wrong as I’m not underweight. 😂 I’ve been vegetarian since I was 11 but I do have to have some kind of carbs and protein with my veg. I have a very sweet tooth though.

MyGazeboisLeaking · 21/11/2020 17:38

I'm veggie, and one of my favourite meals is 2 Linda McCartney sausages, two stuffing balls, an entire pan of steamed carrots, green beans, cauliflower and sweetcorn.

Smothered with veggie gravy..

With Dijon mustard and cranberry sauce!

So not that healthy but my favourite.

MyGazeboisLeaking · 21/11/2020 17:39

@Proudboomer

My favourite is roasted root veg, a piles of roasted potatoes and a couple of big fluffy Yorkshire puddings all with lashings of gravy. Some roasted leg of lamb with mint jelly to go with it Is nice but not essential.

Oh yes - perfection!

DelphineWalsh · 21/11/2020 17:41

If there was nothing else then yeah. But I like cheese so no.

formerbabe · 21/11/2020 17:42

I quite like a heap of roasted Mediterranean veg with feta roasted with it or halloumi because I'm not such a delicate flower that I can exist solely on veg
