Disgusting

AIBU to think it's disgusting that the pay of Nurses, Prison Officers, police, Teachers and other public service workers who have kept us safe despite the risk to themselves throughout this Covid year are the ones that get their pay frozen

This thread is one massive pity party and pathetic competition as to who has worked the hardest and has it the hardest. And funnily enough it’s always the profession that the poster (or their DH) works in.

You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who has not had to work harder because of Covid. No one / very very few have transited without disruption to their work or income.

And most people aren’t getting a pay rise or overtime for it, they are just grateful to have a job

Merename · 20/11/2020 22:30

@StoneofDestiny

We've just found £16.6 billion pounds for new defence spending - while the enemy we still face is Covid.
This is what I think is disgusting. Defence spending being such a priority. Grim.
Sertchgi123 · 20/11/2020 22:31

The private sector has taken a hit, with many self employed being unable to work and having no income and others losing their jobs altogether.

CountreeGurl · 20/11/2020 22:35

I work for the public sector, my pay has been frozen since 2009 and my job isn't safe. I earn less than if I did the same job in the private sector, but public service is important to me

applespearsbears · 20/11/2020 22:43

'It’s not just doctors and nurses that are frontline either: physios, dieticians, porters, domestics, admin, radiographers, HCAs, pharmacists, labs, catering staff to name a few. So many have a vital role to play in one patients journey, even those you may not see. The NHS is a team effort. '

This.

DontCallMeBaby · 20/11/2020 22:45

@izzybobsmum yeah, those are the things that depress me. Pay rise for no one in the public sector except the NHS because they’ve done such a great job with COVID. And the rest of us have done fuck-all presumably? Be honest. The country is broke. The NHS might get a pay rise because not doing that is unpalatable to the electorate. I’d have some perverse respect I’d they admitted that.

And Boris saying ‘it won’t be like austerity!’ No, cos we got 1% through most of that. This time it’ll be what even the most financially illiterate will recognise as a pay freeze (actually a cut).

It’s the utter bloody contempt from our government, who many of us work for, that I find so fucking depressing.

You're winning that race to the bottom. Well done.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/11/2020 22:48

Without a string private sector you can’t have a strong public sector. Which is exactly why we should not lockdown

Exactly this
I find myself wondering how many of those complaining were also shouting for lockdown and insisting we're all massively at risk ... doesn't look so good once the consequences start rolling in does it?

StoneofDestiny · 20/11/2020 22:58

To remove doubt - I don’t work in public service and never have, nor never will, work in the prison service. I do feel however, that if the key workers in public service all stopped working tomorrow, we’d all be in serious shit.

OP posts:
Fruitsaladjelly · 20/11/2020 23:00

Anyone who still has an income should be grateful, many do not, even more won’t soon

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/11/2020 23:04

if the key workers in public service all stopped working tomorrow, we’d all be in serious shit

Absolutely - but it's not going to happen, especially when fewer and fewer other jobs are available with each passing day

That's not a wish for a race to the bottom, BTW - just an understanding that the money's got to come from somewhere

Lalliella · 20/11/2020 23:05

The enemy we face is our own government ☹️
Thewinterofdiscontent · 20/11/2020 23:07

Downside of public sector work. No one is forcing you.

Viviennemary · 20/11/2020 23:08

Most of them haven't had their pay reduced by furlough as people have in the private sector. I think the public sector do pretty well in general.

SentientAndCognisant · 20/11/2020 23:09

Anyone who still has an income should be grateful Grateful implies preferential treatment
Grateful for what exactly?being paid to do the job we trained for in arduous and stressful conditions
Grateful for a salary we earned
Grateful for remuneration for a job done

Pomegranatespompom · 20/11/2020 23:11

@Viviennemary no we didn't get pay reduced by furlough as we continued to work/commute/work with covid+ patents which put us at increased risk. So no, we shouldn't be grateful for being paid.

SentientAndCognisant · 20/11/2020 23:16

Downside of public sector work.No one is forcing you
absolutely agree I’m not forced,I go in by choice,I want to,I need to,I feel compelled
And the vast majority feel, like that too
At height Covid I considered moving out to protect my kids,I worried about bringing this home

Well, yes. But if everyone who worked in financial services stopped working tomorrow we'd also all be in the shit. Likewise if everyone who worked in agriculture, food manufacturing, retail, and utilities stopped working tomorrow. They're all private sector. So I'm not convinced that particular point stands up.
mathanxiety · 20/11/2020 23:19

YYY to you OP.

While the government is gunning for Brexit, hoping to make the UK a big, happy tax haven. for the very, very rich.

goldenlilliesdaffodillies · 20/11/2020 23:25

I am a teacher. Whilst it has been really stressful, I don't feel now is the time to be expecting a pay rise. I am lucky to still have a job.

And if all those who work in the water and sewerage industry (which is private sector) stopped work tomorrow then we would literally all be in the shit.

NC4Now · 20/11/2020 23:28

What sticks in my craw is the big internet firms, Amazon etc, who have really done well out of this pandemic, who get away with paying minimal tax.

That money should be going to prop up the people who really need it, and who use their service to provide them with essentials while the high street is shut.

SentientAndCognisant · 20/11/2020 23:28

That's conflating two unrelated issues
Confusing gratitude with remuneration
You having a job doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have consideration for A rise

newusername2009 · 20/11/2020 23:36

Why is it disgusting - no one is getting payrises this year and whilst I appreciate the work others have done it is not just public sector workers who have been working their arses off.

Sinuhe · 20/11/2020 23:39

Of course a pay rise is always welcome and very frustrating if you don't get one. Especially when everything around you gets more expensive.
But things could be far worse, be grateful to have a job.
