I can’t believe PM has backed Patel! When she’s been found to be a bully I’m bloody furious!!!

OP posts:
switswooo · 20/11/2020 12:53

So it's agreed that she broke the ministerial code but it's deemed ok because she did it "unknowingly"? Like she didn't realise it isn't ok to bully the people who work for her?

How come 'did it unknowingly' isn't an excuse when I went down a bus and cycle road in my car?

And why didn't she read the ministerial code after she broke it in 2017?

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 20/11/2020 12:58

I find it hard to believe that the ethnic minority woman would vote for a migration policy which would see her own parents excluded, so I guess we'll all have to suspend our disbelief for a bit.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 20/11/2020 12:58

YANBU to be furious but you YABU to be surprised.

Janegrey333 · 20/11/2020 12:58

As ever BoJo is sending the wrong message. It’s what he does.

FatimaMunchy · 20/11/2020 12:59

Cheesecake53 · 20/11/2020 13:02

YABvvvvU to expect reasonable behaviour from him.

Janegrey333 · 20/11/2020 13:03

I loved that Theresa May sacked Patel. To see her waddling away from Number 10, via the steps route, as one of those satisfying moments.
She’ll be jettisoned before long.

Neolara · 20/11/2020 13:12

I think it's that fundamentally, Boris places a very low value on integrity. Other things are more important to him - being a Brexiter, being a yes- person, personal loyalty to him. The problem with the pm and government having no interest in integrity is that it gives others in all areas of life carte blanche to ignore it too.

Janegrey333 · 20/11/2020 13:14

was one...

MullinerSpec · 20/11/2020 13:21

So Rutnam was senior civil servant during the Windrush scandal, his department gave misleading info to Amber Rudd which meant she resigned and he now feels that he was unfairly treated and bullied because he was doing a sh*t job! Bullying is wrong but what would you do as a manager if you inherit a useless team who won't go and can't be fired because they have a cushy pension and salary.

Look at it this way 2 women Home Secretaries have been subjected to the home office civil service incompetence 1 paid for with loss of her job and the other, PP, being accused of bullying all to get them to work properly. And yes being a woman does have a lot to do with this a man would have got away with it, I'm speaking as a man.

DioneTheDiabolist · 20/11/2020 15:46

Of course he's backing her, she did what she was instructed to do.🤷‍♀️

So he is backing her and has urged the party faithful to circle round her. Any thread about Patel's bullying will be inundated with whataboutery and distractions.

She is a disgusting bully and should go. She should not be let off the hook because other bullies exist/ she's a woman /maybe her victims deserved it etc.Hmm

Sh05 · 20/11/2020 16:01

I'm not surprised at all. Boris has form for this sort of thing doesn't he?
Theres many others in his cabinet who could/ would/ should have been sacked and replaced in the last few months but are still going strong

Janegrey333 · 20/11/2020 16:24

Nothing about this government is going strong except their sheer incompetence.

Eskarina1 · 20/11/2020 16:26

What would I do if I inherited a useless team that wouldn't go? Well I wouldn't scream and swear at them for a start.

I agree I think her race and gender are factors here BUT that doesn't mean the issue can be ignored.

She's claiming simultaneously to be competent enough to hold one of the most senior jobs in Government while also needing to be told that screaming and swearing at her team wasn't appropriate behaviour?

Like with Cummings the defense is worse than the offense. Apparently, we can all empathise with pressure cooker situations. Really? Because I think a lot of us have worked in intensely pressured situations without bullying our colleagues.

I particularly loved the comment by one MP that Piri had come and spoken to 5 of her constituents and answered their questions and cared about their issues and "you can't fake integrity". 1) answering questions is not integrity and 2) I think politicians are famous for faking integrity. Kissing babies and whatnot.

roarfeckingroarr · 20/11/2020 16:58

I've worked with Priti before. She's firm and decisive but I never considered her a bully. Seems classic case of a woman being unfairly criticised for behaving like many men do without comment. Good on the PM for backing her.

If you read Alex Allen's report he doesn't paint the Civil Service Leadership within the Home Office in a very favourable light. I suspect some members of the Civil Service believe themselves to be above being criticised and more particularly by a woman and an ethnic minority woman at that.

John Reid described the Home Office as not fit for purpose, Jacqui Smith said she survived the post more by luck than anything else.

The Home Office seems inept, frequently gives out incorrect figures and information and leaks like a sieve.

Rutnam is suing for constructive dismissal it will be interesting to hear what is made public during that, from what I've read his own behaviour is questionable to say the least.

I must admit as an Asian woman I've sometimes been surprised by people at work who have argued with me just for the sake of arguing, and seen my reasonable demeanour as a weakness. I do wonder if there's a subconscious view that Asian women should be conciliatory.
roarfeckingroarr · 20/11/2020 17:05

@SharonasCorona that doesn't surprise me at all. Nor does what PPs have said about the HO CS.

Hayeahnobut · 20/11/2020 17:10

@roarfeckingroarr Did she ever swear and shout at you? Do you accept that, all because she didn't bully you, that doesn't mean that she didn't bully others?

SharonasCorona · 20/11/2020 17:12

@Hayeahnobut but roar has only shared her experience of Priti Patel. That's allowed.

DrManhattan · 20/11/2020 17:53

She has just issued some half hearted apology. Saying 'I'm sorry someone felt that way' is not really taking ownership or genuine

MarjorytheTrashHeap · 20/11/2020 18:00

It's frustrating on threads about PP that so many people automatically say she must be being victimised because she's a woman. As if her being female means we shouldn't accuse her of being a bully in the workplace. It wouldn't be right to excuse such behaviour from a senior male politician and it isn't right that she should be excused for being female. It's been admitted publicly that she broke the code!
