I was hinting that Trump himself might be considered as deserving of the death penalty, which could be, ironically, by firing squad. Wink

Happy Thanksgiving to US threadmates!

I wonder how many of Trump's QAnon fans could actually point to Venezuela on a map.

I didn't realise that Michael Flynn was a big QAnon fan

He swore the Qanon oath and everything. He then posted it online. He is well and truly red pilled.

I remain fascinated that the 75th anniversary of the start of the Nuremberg trials appeared to go almost unnoticed in the UKs mainstream media last week.

I imagine reminding populations of leaders being held to account for that actions isn't something the current government is particularly keen on right now ? On both sides of the Atlantic.

The execution of the Nazi ringleaders does pose a moral dilemma though. I get my abolitionist bent from my DM but she wasn't sorry they were strung up.

SCOTUS upholds lawsuit on church ban in NY.

www.cnn.com/2020/11/26/politics/supreme-court-religious-restrictions-ruling-covid/index.html

Now, I'm a person of faith and all for people going to whatever church and worshipping as they choose. But to equate large sanctuaries holding 100s of people with bike repair shops or liquor stores is preposterous.

Churches are more akin to movie theaters or concert halls than a liquor store.

Re; the reinstatement of the firing squad.

The last execution by firing squad was of Ronnie Lee Gardner in 2010, only 10 years ago. In fact, execution by firing squad IS currently legal in 3 states.

What Scrotus is doing is pushing through a regulation that will allow federal executions by firing squad. Right now the only 'acceptable' method is lethal injection.

Biden has already said that he'd going to put in a 'stay' of all federal executions and will push to eliminate the death penalty for federal crimes.

(remembers Gary Gilmore)

Ah, and of course they can't get the drugs needed to comply with the approved protocol because the nasty EU refuses export licenses for anything to do with the death penalty (a stance you knew Boris and chums would desperately like to buck).

Not for nothing has SCOTUK denied extraditions because the US criminal justice system is inhuman.

You know what else? The only posts I see from friends and family frothing about the limitations on church gatherings are from non-church goers too. If they were actually active members of congregations they would know that alternative worship through Zoom and other ways to support the community HAVE been found. The problem will come when churches can open partially but have to think about how to continue to support those shielding. My UK church has committed to maintaining Zoom. But the issues supporting faith communities are much more complex than just open all the doors now, how dare they when you can buy booze, etc.
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/11/2020 14:24

As a matter of interest, how is the Host/communion delivered to the bed-bound in ordinary times? If that can be done (and I am certain that it can) I see no reason for it not to be extended to others during a time of covid.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/11/2020 14:26

(Do Baptists take communion? I have no idea, even though I was married in a Baptist church first time round -- the officiating clergyman was a friend of ours, and we didn't actually attend his church.)

SenecaFallsRedux · 26/11/2020 14:38

Do Baptists take communion? Yes, but with grape juice, not wine.

DGRossetti · 26/11/2020 14:41

I never understood the need for churches for an omnipresent deity.

Or indeed praise for an omnipotent one.

On indeed confession for an omniscient one.

I really wasn't very popular at school at times.

(It's a shame "Bar Mitzvah Boy" doesn't get shown more often).

Interesting thread on 'can Trump pardon himself' from an English law perspective

Davidallengreen @davidallengreen

Could Trump pardon himself?

Some thoughts from an English law perspective

(I am not an American lawyer but have long been fascinated by pardons and the law, see newstatesman.com/david-allen-gr…

twitter.com/davidallengreen/status/1331955035983450112?s=21

Also true

Most interestingly, a pardon means Trump cannot invoke the 5th amendment for federal offenses, since he can no longer incriminate himself. Therefore he could be forced to testify in others’ trials. If he pardons himself, he had better pardon all his family and associates.

justawoman · 26/11/2020 16:16

In normal times a clergyperson or authorised lay person can take a small amount of the bread and wine that was previously consecrated at a service of Communion out to the sick and housebound and say some prayers with them as they receive it. A small amount of bread and wine will be set aside at a Communion service (“reserved”) for this purpose. However, none of this can be done in a COVID-safe way at present either, sadly (because it still involves consuming bread and wine that others have touched, and visits to people’s houses).

This is how it’s normally done in Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches, anyway. Don’t know about other denominations.

President Trump should pardon Flynn, the Thanksgiving turkey, and everyone from himself, to his admin, to Joe Exotic if he has to.

The Left has a bloodlust that will only be quenched if they come for those who fought with

to deliver for the American people.

End quote

It's been pointed to to numbnuts Gaetz that innocent people don't usually need pardons, so what exactly should Trump be pardoning himself for?

Excellent long article about Michigan, which illuminates how various Republicans have dealt with the binary choice of either joining, or being condemned by, the Trump cult.

The Inside Story of Michigan’s Fake Voter Fraud Scandal
www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/11/24/michigan-election-trump-voter-fraud-democracy-440475

[Van Langevelde, canvasser, made] a statement that reflected a courage and moral clarity that has gone AWOL from his party, pleading with the tens of thousands of people watching online to understand that some lines can never be uncrossed.

“We must not attempt to exercise power we simply don’t have,” declared Van Langevelde, a member of Michigan’s board of state canvassers, the ministerial body with sole authority to make official Joe Biden’s victory over Trump. “As John Adams once said, 'We are a government of laws, not men.' This board needs to adhere to that principle here today. This board must do its part to uphold the rule of law and comply with our legal duty to certify this election.”

Van Langevelde is a Republican. He works for Republicans in the Statehouse. He gives legal guidance to advance Republican causes and win Republican campaigns.
[...]
Strangely liberated by his deficit of 154,000 votes, the president’s efforts here were aimed not at overturning the results, but rather at testing voters’ faith in the ballot box and Republicans’ loyalty to him.

“We have to see this for what it is. It’s a PR strategy to erode public confidence in a very well-run election to achieve political ends,” Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, said in an interview last week.
[...]
“The unfortunate reality within the party today is that Trump retains a hold that is forcing party leaders to continue down the path of executing his fantasy of overturning the outcome—at their own expense,” said Jason Cabel Roe, a Michigan-based GOP strategist
[...]
Roe added, “But if they want a future within the party, it is required of them to demonstrate continued fealty. Principled conservatives who respect the rule of law and speak out suddenly find themselves outcasts in a party that is no longer about conservativism but Trumpism. Just ask once-conservative heroes like Jeff Flake, Justin Amash and Mark Sanford.”
[...]
If this young canvasser’s rebellion against the entire Republican Party apparatus was surprising, what came next was all too predictable. Within minutes of Van Langevelde’s vote for certification—and of Shinkle’s abstention, which guaranteed his colleague would bear the brunt of the party’s fury alone—the fires of retaliation raged. In GOP circles, there were immediate calls for Van Langevelde to lose his seat on the board; to lose his job in the House of Representatives; to be censured on the floor of the Legislature and exiled from the party forever. Actionable threats against him and his family began to be reported. The Michigan State Police worked with local law enforcement to arrange a security detail.

Meanwhile, more people don't have enough to eat. Guess mostly where?

www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/business/hunger-coronavirus-economy/

The Catholic Church here is reducing people in services. I'm told that people can attend Mass any day, instead of the obligatory Sunday service, as usual. Or just watch on TV at home.

But it looks like some US ministers couldn't live without the income that church goers provide, despite many having lavish life styles. Angry
