AIBU to spend £84 on takeaway coffees in three weeks?

CheeseMongrel · 18/11/2020 21:41

So I’ve checked my online banking today to add up how much I’ve spent on takeaway coffee since I last got paid.

84 bloody pound

What on earth?

I have been going more due to not having much else to do but Christ that is a serious waste of money.

I was planning to go tomorrow but now I can’t justify it.

Not sure what other things I can treat myself to (that isn’t a massive waste) to keep me going .. any suggestions?

Has anyone else had a bigger waste of money than that lately?

@Babynameseek
She’s allowed to go out for a daily exercise walk and if that involves walking past a costa and buying a takeaway coffee then that is perfectly legal. They wouldn’t allow them to be open would they? Your comment is utterly ridiculous. National lockdown doesn’t mean staying indoors all day. Idiot.

Softpebbles · 19/11/2020 09:26

If you can afford it then carry on! I love a take away coffee, often a cake too and haven't had one in ages. Tomorrow I am walking with a friend and will get a take out coffee and cake, I look at it as I am supporting a local business too.

Sometimes its the small things in life that get us through and add a bit of nice to what is a boring old day/week/month.

Wfh during lockdown 1 back in March made me realise that we were easily getting through 2 tins of Illy a week because DH & I were drinking 3/4 cups of coffee each daily. Restricted shopping back then and our rapidly dwindling coffee stock resulted in me imposing a 2 cup each daily limit which we have kept to. —Tight—I now ensure we have a mini stockpile of Illy. Instant coffee is not the same! You don’t need a Gaggia (ours died after a house move to a hardwater area and DH bodged fixing/cleaning it). Our Rok manual does the business as does an AeroPress (used to be kept at work but now at home).

It does seem a lot of money! But if you aren't in any kind of financial difficulty and it makes you happy then don't feel bad! There's worse things you could be spending money on than coffee. I bought a new mug I really like and a jar of pumpkin spice flavoured coffee for a treat at home

tonyunclejohnny · 19/11/2020 09:29

@AlwaysLatte

You can put 84 quid towards a wicker coffee machine Won't it leak??
😂
AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/11/2020 09:32

If you can afford it and enjoy it then do it.

And thank you.
I work in a ‘huge, massive nasty chain store‘ coffee shop and it’s such a scary time. My team are all local people who need their jobs just as much as any independent coffee shop.

GreyishDays · 19/11/2020 09:37

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

It’s a lot of money and would cover a lovely large purchase or trip.

I didn’t realise coffee shops were open as thought non essential shops were all closed and we were only supposed to go out for essential shopping.

Only in England Smile
murmurgam · 19/11/2020 09:39

I used to have a deal with myself that if I biked to work I could have a coffee, and this was still 5 quid cheaper than driving and paying for parking.

NoProblem123 · 19/11/2020 09:41

If it made you happy at the time then it was £84 well spent - good for you Grin

Rayna37 · 19/11/2020 10:24

To PP who mentioned coffee shops had stopped allowing reusable cups due to Covid: yes but most have allowed it again since the summer and have systems in place to limit contact. Certainly Costa and Starbucks allow it.

Also as a PSA, Leon have a coffee subscription along the lines of the Pret one if you have a branch nearby. £15 for 30 days, limited to 75 drinks.

BlueBlueElectric · 19/11/2020 10:39

Its up to you what you spend on OP.

nosswith · 19/11/2020 10:53

You can have a walk without a coffee. Perhaps take a different route when walking. I go to the local independent coffee shop (their cake is lovely) but only once a week.

Pbbananabagel · 19/11/2020 11:04

If you’re spending it at a local independent cafe like the one I own- THANK YOU. You are helping keep people like us going, helping us pay our staff, and for every pound you spend at an independent £1.60 goes back into the local economy- whereas the big chains it’s literally only 20p that stays in your area. Please keep buying coffee!

SleepingStandingUp · 19/11/2020 11:09

I hope you're doing ok @Pbbananabagel . I wish we had independent coffee shops but it's all Stars and Costas. Still, at least I'm keeping someone on work!

borntobequiet · 19/11/2020 11:12

That’s near enough the average combined electricity and gas bill per month for a two bedroom house. Depends on your priorities I suppose.
I’m surprised it took you so long to realise how much you were spending.

nevermorelenore · 19/11/2020 11:19

If you can afford it, I'd say that's not too bad. I have a good coffee machine at home that is a bean to cup thingie and makes me huge pots of filter coffee. But I do love a good coffee shop coffee, and it's hard to recreate at home.

Also, because of lockdown you're saving money right now on petrol, so therefore you deserve treats. And you are helping the economy.

Funkypolar · 19/11/2020 11:22

When I worked in the City, I spent easily, £5 a day in Starbucks. Now I’m WFH (well, signed off sick) and I’ve saved loads of money.

nanbread · 19/11/2020 11:40

But takeaway coffee I don't get personally at all

I buy takeaway coffee (only occasionally now) because:

It tastes nicer than the coffee I can make myself

It feels like a bit of a treat

It supports the local economy at a time when I'm not spending much (I buy from independents)

Sometimes I want a coffee when I'm out and about and don't want to lug a flask around with me for two hours

Tenyearsgone · 19/11/2020 11:41

People who work in Costa etc need their jobs just as much as independent cafe owners.

ChronicallyCurious · 19/11/2020 11:54

Me and DP spend similar each.

MustardMitt · 19/11/2020 12:44

I remember totting up my spends at work and coming to a similar conclusion. Embarrassing, I was buying coffees and lunches despite taking stuff in with me Blush

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 19/11/2020 13:42

@goingtotown

McDonald’s coffee is 99p.
You couldn't pay me to drink it though, it's horrible. I've tried it 3 times in 3 different mcD's. Never again!
ImnotCarolineHirons · 19/11/2020 14:09

McDonald’s coffee is 99p

It's also bitter, overheated shit.

ImnotCarolineHirons · 19/11/2020 14:16

@JMG1234

£150 per month on Nespresso? Shock so, quick scan of website suggests the average capsule price is 35p. That's about 428 capsules, on a 30 day month that's 14 coffees a day.

Omg, I'd be dead. From lack of sleep if not heart palpitations. Surely that can't be good for his health?

sophandbridge · 19/11/2020 14:21

I hope you used your own cup!

I buy myself nice coffee flavours online and then make my own version of a takeaway coffee each day in a flask if I'm going out or serve it in my favourite mug if I'm at home.
