AIBU to spend £84 on takeaway coffees in three weeks?

So I’ve checked my online banking today to add up how much I’ve spent on takeaway coffee since I last got paid.

84 bloody pound

What on earth?

I have been going more due to not having much else to do but Christ that is a serious waste of money.

I was planning to go tomorrow but now I can’t justify it.

Not sure what other things I can treat myself to (that isn’t a massive waste) to keep me going .. any suggestions?

Has anyone else had a bigger waste of money than that lately?

@MeringueCloud

A good thermos flask Smile
Coffee really doesn’t travel. I have a serious habit- 6+ long espressos/ day. Fortunately nowhere does it compare to home made, certainly not for the price except in Italy where it seems to be a € everywhere.

So that amount of money would feed my family of 4 for 2 weeks.

That’s a lot of money in this house.

PurpleDaisies · 18/11/2020 21:56

I have a lovely coffee machine. I have a great travel mug.

That has not stopped me buying coffee from out and about (although I am more environmentally friendly using my own cup). It’s the psychology thing you can’t replicate at home.

Pret have a coffee monthly subscription, £20 a month and you can have up to 5 drinks a day! Includes all barista made drinks so coffee/hot choc/iced drinks. Pret

I enjoy a nice takeaway coffee, find it relaxing. I don't feel bad about having as many as I want. It's only a waste of money if you can't afford it or it does nothing lasting for you.

RozHuntleysStump · 18/11/2020 21:58

I spend loads at Starbucks myself. Such a waste I know.

Palavah · 18/11/2020 22:00

I don't ever want to calculate how much money I've spent on takeaway coffees and breakfasts and lunches and sometimes dinners after 10 years of working in the city.

My consolation is that I don't smoke or buy designer clothes/accessories or run a car or have regular manicures.

But - Jesus wept - I don't want to think about it

Yes! Their coffee isn’t great and you’d be much better finding a local business to support.

A Costa after the school run is my guilty pleasure too. Not every day but maybe 3x a week. I know it’s a lot of money but it’s the only thing I really ‘treat’ myself to.

AlwaysLatte · 18/11/2020 22:05

You can put 84 quid towards a wicker coffee machine
Won't it leak??

lurker101 · 18/11/2020 22:05

It’s probably similar to what I spend on takeaway coffees, but as long as you can afford it, spend it how you enjoy it 😊

JMG1234 · 18/11/2020 22:06

I recently realised that my husband's Nespresso capsule consumption was averaging £150 a month in lockdown. He's the only one that drinks coffee in our house. Rather meanly (since I order them for him), I didn't rush to place another order when he finished the last batch and he's been making do with the more premium instant stuff for a while.

PontiacBandit · 18/11/2020 22:06

Wow that's a lot. I love my daily coffee but I have a bean to cup machine and a £10 bag of lavazza beans lasts around 1-2 months. I prefer it to coffeeshop drinks as I've perfected a creamy white double shot coffee.

BritWifeinUSA · 18/11/2020 22:07

If you enjoy it and can afford it, why not? I spend more than that each month on frivolous stuff.

But this is MN where there is something wrong with you if you dare spend money on something you could make at home for next-to-nothing. There will be people commenting that for what you spend on coffee in a month they can feed a family of 9 for a year or something like that.

Your money, your choices!

AlwaysLatte · 18/11/2020 22:09

I love my coffee. I was tempted to buy a machine but instead bought a stainless steel cafetière and some really good coffee, also we got a Krups milk frother last Christmas. All together the best coffee I've ever had, space saving and more eco friendly than lots of pods or takeaway coffee cups.

Whattheactual20201 · 18/11/2020 22:10

Honestly if you have the money and bit struggling and makes you happy then it’s fine

NotStayingIn · 18/11/2020 22:12

It's a lot of money and I do get that its a 'waste', but I'm with you.

I love my daily take away coffee! Sometimes it really is the little things in life that bring joy. Personally, I don't feel the need to change it.

sapnupuas · 18/11/2020 22:13

Do you get the same thing every time?

CherryPavlova · 18/11/2020 22:13

Buy a coffee machine. Then put money you’d spend aside for a specific treat - a holiday, the theatre, or ne altruistic and buy food with savings to give to a food bank. That will feel nicer than any coffee.

justconcedealready · 18/11/2020 22:14

IMO, a complete waste of money.

OTOH, a lot of people will say these shops need customers, especially right now, or people will be out of job.

Perhaps cut back a bit?

jessstan1 · 18/11/2020 22:14

I love a takeaway coffee, somehow it tastes different from what you make at home even if you use the same coffee. I can almost taste it now!

It is an awful lot of money but if you can afford it and are not scrimping in other ways, or being mean, it's up to you how you spend your cash.

GaryTheDemon · 18/11/2020 22:14

Literally all on coffees or coffee with something?

Bowerbird5 · 18/11/2020 22:15

Change it to a treat on a Friday. That way you save money and have a treat. Take a cup or flask the other days but look for somewhere pleasant to sit so it is a break from the workplace.

Ragwort · 18/11/2020 22:17

Can you afford it? Do you enjoy it?

A lot of people would easily spend that much on a nice dinner out - last time my DH had a meal out it was over £50 and really not very special. If you are getting enjoyment out of your coffees then it is 'worth it' to you.
