Good to know whose corner he's in.... Only the other day, Sky News were gloating that Boris got a phonecall from Biden before Ireland lol.

I think Obama was a fan of The High Kings too. Might have had them at Paddy's Day or something at the WH.

Big honour for The Chieftains if true!

The football team was not even known as the chiefs, it was a vile racist slur, which thankfully has now been abandoned

There is still the Kansas City Chiefs, but the other team has now (finally) changed its name.

I find this irish pride puzzling too. English of Irish origin don’t have this sense of pride.

English of Irish origin were often subjected to hostility and open discrimination, accents were mocked, unfamiliar names were laughed at, educational attainment questioned, the RC religion greeted with suspicion and sneers, and much more. Under these circumstances they tried not to advertise their origins.

By contrast, the Irish found themselves respected in the US.

In this particular case, it's really good that the US president is keen on his Irish heritage because it may result in some pressure to protect Ireland's interests in BREXIT, and Ireland has been royally screwed over in this whole thing.

In general, though, the love some Americans have for tentatively connected "Irish roots" is a bit cringe. I think it's about white Americans wanting to claim historical rights to being an oppressed minority or something.

There's a certain amount of pride in having overcome initial hostility to essentially take over American cities and political organisations, moving up from blue collar underdogs to Establishment. For many, this achievement constitutes a middle finger held aloft and waving in the general direction of Britain.

I read that they were taken off the ships straight to fight at the front of the American Civil War.

The Irish vote is important in the US.
Likewise Trump is very pro Jewish/Israeli, moved the US Embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. Lots of votes there.
